Error code: 22 - Game fails to load new game or saved game

Hi, For context I have a Windows PC, Sims 4 free base game plus 16 add-ons. And my Sims 4 is integrated with my steam account.

Everything was running smoothly for months, until a few weeks ago when my Sims 4 started giving me this issue.

When I launch Sims 4 there are no issues, but when I try to load a saved game it takes me directly to the season selection screen and gives me the error message Error 22 (please see screenshot attached). Once I select a season I can select a world, but then do nothing after that, I can't select a household even if I have an active household in that world nor can I select a lot to play.

If I try to make a new game then the game crashes and closes.

I have tried clearing the cache of both my steam and EA launchers, and have uninstalled and reinstalled the game twice already. All of my efforts have failed. I am also not very good with tech so I have no idea about any other ways to fix this issue.

Please assist.

  • @KAIA811  As a test, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game,  a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just start a new save, let the game run in live mode for a few minutes, and see whether you can save your progress..

If you still get the error, please let me know what antivirus you use, and if OneDrive is running on this computer, whether you use it or not.

Hey I tried your suggestion but now it is just worse. Now my game crashes as soon as I get into the main menu. I don't have any antivirus except the standard windows defender and I do have one drive on but my documents folder is not linked to it.

  • Hi Another update. I did what you said again but this time completely disabled onedrive and quit the app so it does not sync at all and then relaunched the app and it worked!! Thank you so much.

Hello, i am having the same trouble and i am not quite understanding what you mean by putting it in a new folder, should i move my mods to it also and do you mean another fold in files?

  • @KAIA811  Great to hear, and thanks for the update.

@Nellan026  I meant drag the entire Sims 4 folder out of the Electronic Arts folder so that there is no Sims 4 content there.  The game will create a new Sims 4 folder.  Do NOT add anything to this folder yet—having a new folder with none of your old content inside is the entire point of the test.

@Fizzy_Izzy2022  Yes, you can move your saves from the old Sims 4 folder to the new one.  They're inside the saves folder, naturally.  But if you use mods or custom content, test those first in the new folder so you can figure out whether any of them are breaking the game.  Once you've done that, the saves can be transferred next.

Aside from saves, you'll want to preserve the contents of Tray, which holds saved households and builds, and perhaps Screenshots and Recorded Videos, and the UserSetting.ini file for the login rewards.

Hi i had the exact same issue as  kaia811 and did what you have said but it still will not work. I had the blooming rooms kit for free then it uninstalled and made me repurchase it with money i am not sure if this has something to do with it??

@chrissytota  Did you try the new user folder described in post 2?  If so, did the new save work, and only older saves are affected; or was the new save affected too?  If the new save also threw an error, please post a dxdiag, as requested.

I think i’ve tried almost everything and nothing will fix. I’ve made clean files without my previous saves however it still didn’t work i also uninstalled it on steam and reinstalled it on just ea to see if that would fix it but that wouldn’t work either

@chrissytota  Are you specifically getting error code 22 now, or something else?  I just want to make sure either way.  And if you use a third-party antivirus, have you set exceptions for Sims 4 and the EA App?  The exceptions would be EADesktop.exe for the App; plus TS4_x64, TS4_DX9_x64, and TS4_Launcher_x64 for the game, or the entire Bin folder they're in.

If that doesn't help, please create a new admin Windows account and try playing in that.  Make it local, as in, don't link it to your Microsoft account.  You'll be able to launch Sims 4 without reinstalling anything, but your saves and other user content won't be available.  That's fine for the purposes of this test and can be addressed later.
