Free will: all my sims do is play on the computer

I've been letting my sims live out their lives on their own accord and all they do is play on the computer / chat on their phones.  I thought having full autonomy would make my sims react to the world according to their personality traits, like an active sim would go work out, or a book lover sim would go read books...or at least make them do more activities aside from staring at screens.

is this normal or is my game not working properly?
