I'm having the same issue, my game crashes when it goes over 3,4 GB RAM usage, my save files are 55 MB. My OS is 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate with 16GB of RAM so I do not think it's my OS that is the issue,
My guess is that because sims4 is only 32-bit, it can't handle using so much RAM and it seems having trouble clearing stuff to load. I like to play for long periods of time with the same sims with aging turned off and the save files just keeps getting bigger eventally resulting in the game having to load too much and crashes when I try to travel or save.
This is my main problem with the game and I would appreciate if EA could give Maxis some resources so it could be fixed. I think this is just going to become more of an issue when more expansions will be added and the game will have much more things it needs to load.

I did find an article in regards to resolving memory issues for Sims 3 back in the day, I'm thinking it may be a similar issue, however with 64-Bit systems, the resolution provided in the article I found really isn't helping, especially if the game is hard-coded to only run via 32-bit.
Here's a link for reference:

I tried a few trial runs of it, it definitely seems to work when you decide to take everything out of the custom content folder, but isn't using custom content a pretty strong reason people even play the game?
I'm hoping the game can be designed to handle larger amounts of RAM, it feels like it should be able to...heck, if I recall correctly, even Sims 2 could handle large amounts of RAM.
