This problem has happened to me too! I updated the game and for whatever reason all my game play is gone there is one household left for some reason that is alive again. There were old dead and buried. All my lots family’s and everything since creating that family is gone. Months of game play. Sickened.

Try recovering a backup version of your main save:

Load the save with no mods or custom content present, as in, move your Mods folder to the desktop. You don't need to save your progress, but it's important to find out whether your sims are present without mods or cc.
If this doesn't help, please let me know what dates you see on the save files.
