Re: What computer is best for the Sims 4 including packs, mods, and cc?%

@puzzlezaddict I hope you don’t mind me jumping on this thread, I would like some help with purchasing a gaming desktop for The Sims 4.

I would like to be able to play The Sims 4 plus all expansion packs and DLC plus mods and reshade with graphics on ultra / the highest settings. It will be the main game I play but if the computer is capable enough, I may play cyberpunk 2077 on here also. I currently play Sims 4 on my PlayStation 5. I have been a PC sims player in the past but my setups were never good enough.

My budget is around £1k. I have been looking at a few of the following. Would it be possible to let me know what you think to the below? I don’t really understand the difference between intel and AMD Ryzen.

Any help is so much appreciated! Thank you

  • @Jodie1250  There's no meaningful difference between Intel and AMD per se, at least not in terms of gaming.  Both companies produce a wide range of processors, and what matters is choosing one that's good enough for what you want to do an not too expensive.  Since you're looking at prebuilt systems, you're further constrained.

However, you can pretty much guarantee that whatever CPU is in the computer will be sufficient to power its other hardware, particularly the graphics card.  Since GPUs are significantly more expensive relative to gaming performance than CPUs (in large part because most games lean much more heavily on graphics processing), the company that assembles the computer is going to make sure nothing throttles the GPU's ability to run at capacity.  Point is, you don't need to think too much about the CPU in a pre-built system.

Between the two computers you've linked, the second one is significantly better, but the first would still run Sims 4 on ultra graphics settings with all current packs included and with some room to spare.  If this were only about Sims 4, the first would be perfectly fine and the second not worth the extra £200.  But with Cyberpunk and possibly other games in the mix, the second is the better choice—newer, more demanding games would benefit from the extra power.  The graphics card in the second is about 20% faster in gaming, and the processor is more like 50% faster (although there's a lot of variation in tasks).  That means it would be easier to swap out the GPU for a faster one down the line if you decided it was necessary.

I would normally offer to look for other options for you as well, but I did so a few days ago for another U.K. buyer and didn't see anything better than the second system for under about £1,100.  So if you like it, go ahead and get it.  If you'd like something cheaper though, I can try to find other good options in the £800 range.

@puzzlezaddict Thank you for this! Do you have any recommendations for a screen which will enhance the ultra graphics? I think you have mentioned a few in a previous post but I can’t find it.

@Jodie1250  The most important detail is that the panel itself is IPS, the highest quality in terms of colors and viewing angles.  After that, I'd look for a screen with a 2560x1440 resolution because everything will look more crisp and clear (as long as you tell Sims 4 to run at that resolution too).  A peak brightness of at least 300 nits is important too—250 is fine in a darkened room but can feel a bit dim or washed out under lights or even with daylight coming through the windows.

If you'd like, I can look for good options for you.  Just let me know whether there are any other details that matter.  If you'd prefer to do your own shopping, don't worry too much about the brand—as long as it's one you've heard of, it's likely fine.  And you can link anything you find here for a second opinion as well.

@puzzlezaddict Thank you so much! You have been so helpful. Do you mind having a look for me and recommending some? I don’t have any requirements so I’ll go with your recommendation. Thanks again

@Jodie1250  All of these fit the bill (the first two are the same unit), with a 100 Hz refresh rate:

These have a higher refresh rate, at least 165 Hz:

The last one is an ultrawide monitor, as in, it has a 21:9 aspect ratio rather than the standard 16:9.  So you get extra pixels lengthwise without sacrificing any vertical resolution.  AOC makes panels for other better-known manufacturers and some of its own, so its monitors are good quality overall too.  If you want to compare brightness among the models, the units are nits or candelas or cd/m^2, all of which are the same.

All of these monitors are equally compatible with whatever computer you buy, and they should all perform up to their specs.  So pick one you like for whatever reasons matter to you.  Or if you decide you don't like any of them, let me know why so I can do a more targeted search.
