Sims 4 Crashing at Random Intervals

Hey

I've recently got a new PC (specs below) and the game has been crashing at random intervals, sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes I can play for an hour.

I have been on the NVIDIA control panel and tried to add the game:

There are multiple options for the Sims, is this right?

=== Graphics device info ===
Number:          0
Name (driver):   NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070
Name (database):  [Found: 0, Supported: 1]
Vendor:          NVIDIA
Chipset:         Vendor: 10de, Device: 2f04, Board: 89e61043, Chipset: 00a1
Driver:          , Version: 32.0.15.8129, GUID: 242B311A-7F31-11F0-90D2-806E6F6E6963
Driver version:  8129
Monitor:         \\.\DISPLAY1
Texture memory:  11855MB
Vertex program:  5.0
Pixel program:   5.0
Hardware TnL:    1

Is this crashing even related to graphics?

  • whiletheflies  Yes, Sims 4 has multiple executables for various purposes:

TS4_x64: runs the standard (DirectX 11) version of the game
TS4_DX9_x64: runs the DirectX 9 version
TS4_Launcher_x64: not totally sure, but I think it decides between the above and is then done
TS4_x64_fpb: runs the currently experimental Memory Boost version

Your game would default to using the first, so that's what you should use to set Control Panel options.

For the crashing, I'd like to see a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

  • whiletheflies  That's fine, exactly what I wanted.  The dxdiag lists a few Sims 4 crashes, but they're pretty generic, not much use on their own.  Have you noticed any pattern to the crashing?  For example, maybe it only happens on certain lots or in certain worlds, or with fairy sims, or when your sims are doing certain activities.  If so, let me know.

Please also test with no mods or custom content, as in, move your Mods folder to the desktop and delete localthumbcache.package.  You don't need to save your progress with the mods and cc removed.

I do see in your dxdiag that the iGPU is disabled, probably in the Device Manager.  Did you do this deliberately?  It should be fine, but it might be better to disable the chip in BIOS instead.  Other than that, I don't see any obvious sign of a graphics-related issue, and the iGPU shouldn't have anything to do with rendering Sims 4 anyway.

    Hi

Thank you, for regular troubleshooting I have already ran it without mods and deleted the cache and it still crashes to desktop, I've also uninstalled it fully and reinstalled, it still crashes.

I had a look and disabled the igpu because we wanted to make sure Sims couldn't use it in case it was trying to use the motherboard instead of the graphics card (which it doesn't seem to be doing anyway based on the config log) - I only thought it could be graphics related as I've exhausted everything else!

Interestingly I am playing a house full of fairies but there isn't a particular thing that makes it crash, it seems so random - like I can visit other worlds, enter CAS with it running fun, there isn't a specific action I make to crash the game.

  • whiletheflies  Fairies can be a problem when they have custom tattoos, or glowing tattoos, or sometimes for reasons that aren't clear (to me at least).  Innisgreen also has some issues, particularly on the pond lots and the tree house.  So I would test non-occult sims living in a different world.

A monitor is driven by whatever GPU it's connected to, so your iGPU wouldn't be involved in rendering anything on-screen unless you hooked the monitor up to the motherboard.  Laptops are wired differently, but that's not a concern here.

    Hey
Thanks so much for your help - I did a quick google and someone else had the same problem playing Innisgreen? I will try another neighbourhood and see if it still happens - I can upload a lastcrash but they're super unreadable so not sure if that'll help.

  • whiletheflies  The lastcrash files are mostly unusable to anyone outside Maxis.  We (volunteers) do ask for them when we hear that someone wants them for a specific issue, like when the SimsDirect account posts an info request in one place, we try to ask anyone we see with that issue.  But I don't think they're looking for lastcrashes for Innisgreen issues right now.  They are looking for saves though, in this thread:

[PC/MAC] [EBN] Frequent crashes in Innisgreen | EA Forums - 12369004

That is specifically for a crash in that world, and reproducible with no mods or custom content.  If you want to share a save, EA_Solaire asked for them in this reply:

You could include your lastcrash as well; worst case, they don't need it and don't read it.

One other fairy-related issue I'd read but had forgotten is when the fairy has different skin tones in their two forms.  So if yours do, switch them to the same skin tone and see whether it helps.

    Wow, that is shocking, lol.

Thanks for your help! I moved the family to Gibbi and so far so good, I will check out this thread though :)

    Thanks so much!
