Can I prevent The Sims from crashing quite so often?

This morning I installed The Sims for the first time since The Sims 2 came out and I'm really excited and it's loads of fun. But the game will just crash quite frequently when traveling between lots or when pop-ups appear. I get that it's an old game and all, but basically what i'm wondering is if there's anything I can do that will make the game run just a little bit better. I'm playing on my laptop with Windows 10. Are there any settings I could change in game or on my laptop that would maybe make it run a little bit smoother? Thanks.
