Sims in Windowed Mode?

Okay, so I made the shortcut and I added -w -r(add window size) but when I load the game, I just get a black screen and a white cursor. I have to Alt Tab to get out of the game. If I take out the screen resolution and just leave the -w, again I get a black screen. I'm running Windows 8.1. Is there no way that I can play The Sims in window mode?
