Sims on GameCube- Party Animals help

I understand I’m very late on this, does anyone still play Sims 1 on GameCube? I do and I’m not sure if my game is broken or I’m doing something wrong. I completed the ‘upgrade your abode’ goal and unlocked the tree, but it’s undid itself and is still highlighted white. Is there a certain amount of money I have to spend? Did I sell too much and the goal reset? When I go to move out with a friend at a party he says he can’t move in with someone who “has a place like this.” I’ve been stuck for two days. Please help :/

I’m also not getting a promotion despite having all the skills and friends
