Will Project Rene be just about apartments? Are you prepared for disappointment?

Have you noticed that so far, everything that has been shown about Project Rene is about apartments? We've already seen that some people had the opportunity to play the demo and furnish apartments.

Okay, it's a game in development, almost nothing has been shown so far, but still, don't you think it's weird? Especially if we consider the fact that this game will be available on mobile devices?

In one of the simulations that were shown on Behind The Sims, they showed what would be Sims traveling through an environment, and around them were what? Apartments

I don't want to be pessimistic, but this really is weird. Will we not have the usual build tools? Will we not have houses? Will it be just apartments at first?

In the images shown of the world, it appears to be a reduced environment, just like the image from one of the simulations.

Will we not have an open world, as the community wants so much?

To make matters worse, in one of the job openings to work at Project Rene, they talk about the game, and they once again highlight only the apartments.

Would it be something bad?

    I'm kind of mid-key worried about this. Are we all going to be restricted to playing as an avatar/"Simself" living in a city we share with other players, unable to edit any lot except our personal "apartment," unable to create our own worlds, families, neighbors and stories?
  • My guess is that the apartments will be the multiplayer and/or free base game area, with bigger worlds and neighborhoods locked in DLC. Mobile devices may only be strong enough to handle apartment buy mode, with build mode needed a more robust computing system.

    If it ends up being only apartments I won't even take their offer of a free download and will play games that offer me homes and neighborhoods I want to play and build in. I have learned with Sims 4 if they don't say it's there expect the most basic features like homes to not be in game.

    The job openings details does not look good for this game at all apartments make me think we will be getting a heavily designed city like world in which we decorate our shell lots and nothing more the game being playable on a phone is making a lot of sense now.

    I have no desire to predict the Sim future, but that one interview with Lyndsey did seem like they were trying to set expectations as low as possible so the reaction won't be like that to Sims 4's lack of everything at launch. For myself, though I was interested in seeing where they were going with the experience gained from Sims 4, I now expect nothing and that really does make me sad. This Project Rene sounds a lot more like EA's version of SecondLife and not in any good way.

  • I've never really wanted a Sims Online experience. All I've ever wanted is a co-op option where my friends and I can play and build together. I so miss the open worlds of Sims 3! I agree that the Sims themselves are better in Sims 4 but it's never grabbed me like all the beautiful worlds (I bought every single one the store put out as well and loved them all!) of Sims 3. Of course those worlds were poorly optimized and would eventually start crashing and you'd have to start all over again so that was the downfall of Sims 3 for me. I had this crazy dream that a Sims 5 would bring those back bigger and better, with the improved Sims, and let me play co-op with a group of friends. To me, that seemed the natural evolution of things. Not... whatever the hades this seems to be.

    Anyone ever played YoVille/YoWorld/whatever it is/was called? That's basically how it worked: it was free to play in a one-room apartment, which you could furnish with basics using "YoCoins" (which could be earned in-game, limited to a certain amount per day). Houses and exclusive furnishings could only be purchased with "YoCash," which you had to buy with real money. You couldn't alter the actual structure of any of your properties--just fill each room with a limited number of objects. You only played as a single avatar. There was no creation of worlds, characters, stories--creativity was limited to "personalizing" your own copy of something premade. Gameplay was just socializing with other players.

    Now that I think of it, that's sort of how The Sims Social (which I played via Facebook) worked back in the day, except there wasn't even an outside common world.

    That's what I'm afraid Renee will be. Creative people and anyone who wants to see what the latest technology can do for a game like The Sims as we've known, loved and spent money on it will have to seek out EA's competitors.
  • The fact that it's also available on mobiles doesn't frighten me, because an iPhone 15 Pro can now run Assasin's Creed, and surely other major games to follow. Today's smartphones can be monstrous in terms of performances. So, as this is the main element that evolves each year with the new models, I think it will be even more interesting for gamers in a few years' time.

    Also, I've always known The Sims to be a game for the masses. Back in the days of The Sims 3, I remember the developers saying they wanted to make the game accessible for a wide range of configurations, and yet this never bothered simmers - many still consider this game to be one of the best in the franchise.
