What do you mean on their own? You still have to hit the pink check mark to finish it.

I have this same problem.
I would send my sims to work (7 hour shift), come back hours later and it will display 7 hours as if no time has passed.

Did you fully start the work event?

I have had the same issue. I'll start the event, it'll BE actively going and the time will be ticking down while I'm watching the Sim. If I go to my other Sim though, or if I even just go back to my Home screen and leave the app running in the background, it'll just stop counting down the time for some reason. I'm assuming that isn't normal, right?

List the specific devices you play with: Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
OS Version: Android version 7.0

How often does the bug occur? 90% of the time I am not actively watching the character with the phone unlocked.
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Send the two Sims to work their respective professions. Let it finish on its own time with the phone locked. Or just focus on one and the other will never count down.
What do you expect to see? I'm assuming the event is supposed to finish after the stated time.
