Couldn't agree more with the headline. The only reason I visit this forum in the first place is to see who's been peeking in the raw files... F you, EA.
I like reading the RAW files threads too. But after reading the TOS, I'm thinking that they may be breaking the rules.
- Attempt to interfere with, hack into or decipher any transmissions to or from the servers for an EA Service.
Keyword is "servers". No one is deciphering any transmissions on the server. They're deciphering the raw data files already on their phone's hard drive. They don't want people spying on private messages going back and forth basically.
It's really a question for EA to answer. The rule is somewhat ambiguous.
Actually it's 100% NOT a question for EA to answer. If they wanted to file a suit against someone for deciphering their data files, they don't get to be both the plaintiff and the judge/jury. The only individual equally unqualified to answer would be the defendant. I'm not aware of the laws governing this type of activity, but regardless, EA's written rules are fairly straightforward. Reading the raw data files don't violate the portion of the guidelines that you posted.
I'm not trying to start an argument with you. But...... "What exactly do you mean by that rule?"; is actually a question you could ask EA. In fact, if you find it ambiguous, and you were using their services; it would be important to ask what they mean. Not just take the random postings at a forum as fact.
Putting aside for a moment that it isn't actually ambiguous at all, asking EA will obviously result in them telling you to not do anything because it's easier than having to draw specific lines. They will go with the "better to be safe than sorry" rule. The real person you should be asking is an attorney who does not represent EA. Then you'll get the unbiased answer you want. And while I may be a random person on the forum, and acknowledge that I have no background in this area of law, I am an attorney and I understand how these sorts of matters work.
