How many playable characters?

All you have to do is count. The problem is what defines NPC. Examples: The Felons from the Superheroes 2 event are NPCs but are permanently attached to Orphan Alley. Santa, Gil, and Lyle Langley disappear from the game.

298 taskable characters? So with Muhsetino's list of 274 characters before the current event, that would mean that 26 new taskable characters have been added during the current event. Can that be right?

If you count only characters that have a list of tasks and are on the Town Census, there were 274 at the end of the County Fair event.
There were 8 added in this event:

Lord Montymort
Unicorn Wizard
Greystash
Slithers
Count Dracula
Evil Shopkeeper
The Great Raymondo
Angelica Button

282 is the correct count as of today - and does not include the beasts who have tasks but then they are not sent from the unemployment office

How do you get the number? Do you count them one by one in the Town Census? I don't find anywhere an indication of the total number.

To do that would be very tedious and you can lose count.
I simply go to the unemployment office and on the list look for the highest number of characters you can send on their jobs and count if any you already have on a job. For example mine reads 271.

Okay, I'm confused. When I look at my Employment Office, I currently have 274 "jobs" in effect. There are 4 "regular" ones I've not yet purchased (Herb, Belle, Jessica and Manjula), so that gets me to 278.

There are 2 pairs of characters "with" each other on jobs, so that would imply I have 280 characters.

I read the entire list and can't find anyone I don't have other than the 4 I mentioned - I'm befuddled!

Which two paired jobs (4 characters?) are you using? Quite often paired jobs are not counted in the Employment Office, so that would mean your count is correct.

The 4 I had paired were Smithers/Kodos and Robo Burns/Doggie Smithers.

I dunno - I remain 99% sure I have everyone in 282 character list other than the 4 I mentioned, but it bugs me that the stats tell me I have 276, not 278!
