How many shovels are you saving for Act 2?
Although the event has just started, has anyone else been thinking about getting a head start in Act 2? I'm probably going to save all 199 shovels for the next act as long as I can get all the Act 1 p...

You get the same amount of fossils per shovel weather you use them on one excavation or on many excavations. Best strategy is still to get the gem in as few moves as possible
Example: (assuming no bonus from panini press)
Use 100 shovels to clear 3 excavations you get 3600 fossils and 3 gems
Use 100 shovels following the pattern on 14 excavations you get 3600 fossils and 14 gems (assuming avg 7 digs to find gem)
plus tachyons and specimens from 14 excavations.

This. Including the main track prizes as I can get tons of fossils from digging. Just skip astound the gem a bit, adds up.
