The best method I have seen is to have the kid who tells the story continue to retell the story (ex. Millhouse for bunnies). That way you can tell what the town is spawning by who is telling the story at the campfire. This is what I use if the story is being told when I visit each neighbor.
This. Kids earn more telling stories as opposed to making smores.
There is 0 reason someone shouldn't be telling a story at all times... unless you happen to be close to the cut off for the campfire upgrade and need a few more before switching.- wadebearRetired Hero

Just curious, but what difference does knowing what they're spawning right away make?
If you're using your friend visits to help upgrade the campfire, you only want to tap on the relevant nightmares. So seeing what is spawning immediately via a marker can speed up your visits as you can just drop your terrors and move on, rather than hunt for irrelevant nightmares.
Or if you're not looking for a particular Nightmare, but just want to tap for possible donuts, then it will tell you what to look for. I've been in many towns hunting around with no idea which Nightmare I should be on the lookout for. - wadebearRetired Hero

Is the tube slide available for cash?
Not at the moment. It's a limited time item that's only available now and then. - wadebearRetired Hero

That's a maybe.LinkwickSomeone in another thread suggested "popsicle stick Disco Stu" for disco zombies.[/quote wrote:

Ok, so it's really handy if you go into someone's town and there's a marker to indicate what they're making at the campfire if you can't see what kid is telling a story and you didn't catch the sound because of the Roar of the FTs. So I decided to do that myself.
I've got the Tube Slide for Snakes. I've got a Bunny Topiary for Bunnies. I'm stuck on what I can use for Zombies and Skeletons.
It need to be something I can buy for cash if I don't have it, cheap because I'm still buying land, and fit onto a 4x4 square so I can put them all in the same spot.
Suggestions?
This is confusing me. The campfire is the LZ. How can you not see the story teller? Unless there isn't one on duty? Then the sound is the back up notification. Both are instant, and consistent in every town you visit.
The sounds are enough for me. I can hear the chime of the bunnies and the bone rattling of the skeletons very easy. The zombies are a louder growl and the snakes just seem like none of the above.
I skip every town that doesn't make the sound i want. Then later when my currency has become something different, i go back through and listen for the matching sound again.
My friend visits are much much faster and I'm upgrading my fire much faster. The sound works.
EDIT: CONFIRMED the story teller depicted on duty is NOT an accurate visual clue in friend towns.. But the sound is.
If you need a visual clue, you may prefer WB's method described above. - wadebearRetired Hero

The sound effect when their town opens identifies what is spawning.
But people get distracted, the sound gets drowned out by the Roar of the FTs, and some people play with their sound turned off. - wadebearRetired Hero

After 4 hours the story teller pops out with the rest of the kids in the visited town. So if I'm asleep and it's been more than 4 hours since I started the cycle they won't see anything.
Tomorrow I'll be gone all day. So whatever I start will be the Nightmare until I get back in the evening. - I like the idea of using the tube slide as a snake signal, but I don't have one.
What else would be an easily recognisable signal? - I normally have my sound turned off but I put it on in the morning when I'm doing my visiting, then switch it off again, simple.
why make it complicated, also you can tell what's being spawned by looking at who's telling the story.
Again simple. :D - do you happen to have the homer grave? you could use it for zombies^^
this is my setup, i prefer the diso stu statue:
