Funnily enough, the Americans, Australians etc. use Soccer for exactly the same reason as the Brits invented it ... so as to easily distinguish the various sports with "football" in the name. Like those other nationalities, we call the most popular version of "football", football and the others something else ... in the UK Association Football is called just "Football" while Rugby Football is called "Rugby" and in the US, American Football is called just "Football", while Association Football is called "Soccer" (because "Association" would be a stupid name).
Also, for me, "Socceroos" has to be one of the finest nicknames for any national sports team in the world, so it is worth it, just for that.
I made that comment a full day ago. I found it interesting that no one had responded after the earlier back and forth's.

I was waiting for pushback or flat out denials but nothing excepts crickets till now. Then again Brits are generally speaking far more polite than the typical Americans I do verbal battle with on the political circuit.
