I assumed English was his first language. Are you telling me that there are other languages? I thought we successfully eradicated all that foolishness, and all that's left is getting the UK people and Australians to stop misspelling words like "colour" ;)
And if you guys would stop calling football 'soccer' things would be perfect.
From http://www.wordorigins.org:
The Football Association was formed in London in October 1863 when representatives of eleven clubs and schools met in an attempt to standardize the rules of the game. One of the rules prohibited the carrying of the ball, a rule that would lead to the Rugby-oriented clubs leaving the Association several months later. The name Association Football was coined to distinguish it from Rugby.
By 1889, the abbreviation socca was in use, and the spelling soccer had made its appearance by 1895.
TL/DR
The Brits coined the term "soccer" and sadly many dont realize their own history. 8)- dcacooperNew Spectator

You beat me to it.
Funnily enough, the Americans, Australians etc. use Soccer for exactly the same reason as the Brits invented it ... so as to easily distinguish the various sports with "football" in the name. Like those other nationalities, we call the most popular version of "football", football and the others something else ... in the UK Association Football is called just "Football" while Rugby Football is called "Rugby" and in the US, American Football is called just "Football", while Association Football is called "Soccer" (because "Association" would be a stupid name).
Also, for me, "Socceroos" has to be one of the finest nicknames for any national sports team in the world, so it is worth it, just for that. dcacooper wrote:

I made that comment a full day ago. I found it interesting that no one had responded after the earlier back and forth's.
Glad someone did even if its just someone who has my back. 8)
I was waiting for pushback or flat out denials but nothing excepts crickets till now. Then again Brits are generally speaking far more polite than the typical Americans I do verbal battle with on the political circuit.
Thanks for adding your info, its very informative. :)DamnedDonuts wrote:
