In my house, we had the 'traditional' belief that if you were nice Father Christmas brought you presents. If you were naughty, you got coal, which is bad in comparison.
This was somewhat confused a week later by the 'first footing' by which for luck the first person to come through the door at New Year's had to bring coal, making it a good thing.
Now I'm marrying into a Chinese family with all of their traditions. Our kids are going to experience a lot of odd stuff.
In fact, I think I will try to make some new ones up.
