Go to the crating tab. Tap to level up. If you do not have enough parts to level up a pop up will give the option of "do it".
Tap "do it" and it will take you to robots.
Found this out myself and wondered if this was mentioned on here. Shame it doesnt say if all the robots have been tapped though. You have to repeat the process you mentioned to find out that there are no robots left.
