Well I disagree with the sentiment that Simpsons characters aren't already celebrities! Willie the janitor has recently, and not for the first time, been voted the world's most famous Scot... ahead of the likes of Ewan McGregor, Billy Connolly and Sean Connery. That's just one example (probably my only one  ) of a celebrity made in Simpsons, rather than adding to the show.
It's not surprising that Family Guy have to have such a star-studded event to keep in the public eye, what with 10 years less air-time with the first few years of that dis-counted due to unpopularity. Who do you think benefits more from the crossover episode?
You make a very compelling argument. I have to agree that the Simpsons is so popular in its own right, that it has made its own characters into celebrities. It is funny, when Joe Mantegna is on Criminal Minds, people reference him being the voice for Fat Tony from the Simpsons quite often. It is one of his biggest claims to fame, without a doubt. And the Simpsons has been on for so long, and has had such a wide range of guest appearances for different episodes, that it is in its own level compared to the Family Guy. Way more iconic and recognizeable than FG ever will be.
