Anytime the game overloads with memory it crashes. Sometimes adding a new character or triggering a new event can do that too. Don't worry. As long as you are signed in the game nearly always remembers where you are and gives you credit for what you've earned and restarts any dialogue you might be in the middle of.

If you are an advanced item player like me and have more than 5000 items in your Springfield which will trigger a warning message suggesting that you reduce the number of items in your town lest you get image glitches you might want to consider reducing items in your town using a schema like this:

    1) seasonal items that are out of season - (Christmas lamps in May?)
    2) any items that give you no joy
    3) moving items that can't be assigned tasks that you don't care about especially out of season
    - they take more memory than stationary ones.
    4) duplicates that produce less money than other items.

You can develop your own schema or rubric that pleases you. If your Springfield crashes a lot it may not take much deletion from your town's display to help a good deal. Note that in most cases you shouldn't have to sell these items to solve the problem. Putting them in storage seems to solve the problem and you should never sell premium items or characters or delete them even if the game will let you as you may never be able to get them back and could get caught in a loop where you absolutely need them to finish some obscure task as part of an event.

    Hope this helps!
