Trees appearing on road then disappearing

Noticed this in Croatia and tested on a couple of stage, when trees are set on low they appear first in front of where they are actually placed quite often being on the road and as you get closer they disappear. Dynamic objects is on high, not sure what other settings are relevant. Trees on any other setting dont seem to do this, have only tested on Mali Lipovec and Hartje so far. Upscaling is off, post processing ultra low, aa low, aniso x2. 

Just tested Noakes hill in NZ and I can see this behaviour happening here too it's just that the trees aren't out on the middle of the road like Croatia. Attaching 3 photos you can see two trees that disappear as I got closer.

  • From what I can make out the low LOD trees are rendered as some kind of 3D sprite projected onto the surface of a sphere that is roughly the size of the tree. If you get too close to the surface of the sphere (as happens if you have the Trees setting too low) then the 3D sprite shader throws a wobbly and the tree appears to shoot into the air and disappear. This is also why low LOD tree roots show through some of the terrain as they are depth buffered using the range of the sphere surface rather than the range of the trunk surface.

    Setting Trees to higher levels moves out the range at which the 3D sprite transitions to a proper 3D rendering of the tree so the issue becomes less noticeable.
