When is star sign seen under both GDI offensive unit and defensive unit obtained?

Can anyone please tell me when does offence unit and/or defence units, gets star sign ( below left next to CP) ?
for example : GDI's Rifleman squad of offensive unit have -a star (below left) and CP 5(below right)

Is it after upgrading the offence and defence unit to a certain level (say around level 40) we see star sign ?

You collect sufficient credits and research points by killing the forgotten (mainly) until you have the numbers indicated besides them in the research tab.

Firstly, research a particular unit and secondly doing upgrade of the unit present below the same researched unit with research points and credits, collected during combat.

Those units (among a couple of others) does not have an research option, so no star for them.
