What's up, Madden Community!

We have an exciting new change to House Rules in the latest next title update. The team is using this feature in House Rules as a test run to gauge your feedback on it before considering it's roll-out into other modes within MUT and Franchise, so we're excited to see how it impacts game decisions.

In the image below you'll see the following:
  • Limits (Play is locked once limit is reached)
  • Cool-down period

Madden NFL's Community Manager KRAELO & Associate Producer Jake Stein broke down the new feature in yesterday's stream. Check it out here

For Limits, you'll have a specific amount of times you can select a play within a game. When a play is selected and put on a cool-down, you'll have to select a specific number of plays before using that one again. This will change the way you interact with play-calling by encouraging players open up more of their playbook.

This should help disrupt the meta and we're excited to hear your feedback around it. Please let us know what your thoughts are below!

Is this serious. Just an idea for you guys, you should try fixing the broken plays instead of preventing the play from being called.
I hate when people pick the same play over and over, its not football. But it's not the player's fault that they found a way to exploit the games poor coding. Why don't you fix these broken plays instead

well it is Football look at the titans =) if you find a play your opponent cant stop run it down until he can stop it =)

But yes just locking Plays bc you are not able to balance the game is stupid
  • good job with the feature EA. Now I might actually try MUT again. Add this to Online head to head.

Your Titans analogy is partially right. They were successful at running the ball. But the didn't call the same exact run design, with the same blocking scheme, and the in same formation for four quarters. And most of the time they were using the run to set up easy passes for Tannehill.

Right on. Give a shout here after you've had a good run of games this weekend.

  • People still don't punt, ridiculous and disrespectful to NFL football. What kind of coding allows my defense to stop offense for 3 plays and then play like trash on 4th and 20?
  • I like how they don't respond to the negative feedback, only the positive, how about you guys fix the flawed ai and coding for money plays like pinch buck o. Instead, make it so we can't call it. There Madden is again blaming the user instead of themselves for making a bad game. And oh yeah, why are the animations smoother for tackling on ps2 games than PS4. Bet they won't respond to my criticism because it isn't in their favor, watch.

Those are great pieces of feedback as I know a lot of players within the community tend to struggle against the Pinch Buck O play. There are counters to it though and we've had several discussions on it in these forums, such as this one. We want to try and keep feedback in this discussion on topic to the cool-down and limits feature in House Rules, thanks.
  • This is the best thing added to the game. I don't mind having a go to play that works great, but spamming tight offset tight end becomes the new Pat's Sail. Please bring this to weekend League and let's see what those leader boards look like after that!

As a casual player I really only have time to learn about a dozen plays really well. I can run the same play with 3 or 4 different outcomes depending on what the defense gives me on these plays. While some players may like this it hurts the rest of us more casual players. Do not make this feature mainstream. Fine for house rules but not elsewhere. Even as a casual player I do spend some money to enjoy the game.

    Don’t learn plays. Learn concepts.

You were able to run the same play in the hurry up and if you audible to another play that took an attempt away. How did you all feel about that?
  • Please put this is every MUT mode! This is the best with not having to worry about the same play over and over again.

Hurry up should only penalize the offense. I should only have 1 attempt taken away on defense.

As someone who used to play a lot online in year's past, I would love to see this added to all online games. I think it's safe to say we have all encountered a player who will run the same play over and over again. It gets old very quickly and takes the fun out of playing IMO.
  • Please bring this back!

It's because young kids are playing this game and they are not as knowledgeable to the benefits of punting or playing until the very end for a great come back.

I personally like it when an opponent keeps doing the same play over and over because it gives me a chance to experiment and figure out a way to stop it, and then I'll know it forever, which is exactly the same reason I never quit a game early - always play until the end.

I'm fine with the limitation rule in a House Rules mode but please never bring it to the Super Bowl Season mode. Another reason you should NOT have play limits or cool down is because some people prefer to play out of 1 formation (which is perfectly acceptable) and some of those formations only have 1 or 2 good pass plays and 1 or 2 good run plays. Additionally, a player may frequently choose the same pass play as a BASE play and audible several of the positions to different routes. I oppose limiting any kind of freedom of creativity ESPECIALLY when it comes to a football game where creativity is 50% of what football is all about. Creativity is ALREADY severely limited in Madden by not having play design capability like the very first original Madden for PC and Commodore had which got this franchise jump started in the first place. Coach John Madden was all about Xs and Os and the modern day Madden games have been an insult to Mr. John Madden in that regard by not having play design capability - it would be more appropriate to rename this game after a football player and NOT a football coach because of the Arcade-ness and lack of play design.

A better and more realistic solution would be to add a new player attribute called "Intelligence" which would allow a defensive player to boost his performance the more times the same offensive play is called. A player with low intelligence won't adapt to plays very well while high intelligence players will perform exceptionally better.

On offense, the intelligence attribute would have the same effect vs a redundant defensive play that is continuously repeated.
