What is the trick to blocking kicks (field goals & punts)?

Do you just hold L2 (to sprint) and then press triangle (to jump)-(PS4)?

On X-box its the RT, and if you time it properly you will have time to push X (on Xbox) and attempt to block the kick.

I think it is just random. Sometimes when you do all the right things they allow it to happen sometimes they don't. A coin toss.
