Welcome to Gridiron Notes

Throughout the season, we will publish a series of Gridiron Notes articles to keep you up-to-date with the latest Madden NFL 20 news. Our goal with this series is to provide you with deeper insight into our game. That means more information from our development team and more communication around title updates, patches, and Ultimate Team.

Our goal is to publish an article anytime we have new and relevant information to share. We want these articles to provide you with context as to what's happening within the game. We will let you know when each article one is published via alerts on our social channels like Twitter, and our forums/website.

Not only will we let you know about exclusive information, but we also want Gridiron Notes to be a place where we celebrate the community. That is why we’ll be highlighting content made by community members in each article as well. So, be on the lookout towards the end of each article for some of the best content created by players each week.

With that said, today we will focus on the announcement of Madden NFL 20 (and additional details on features), the cover athlete Patrick Mahomes, and a roadmap of when you’ll learn more information about all key areas of the game.

We hope you enjoy the first Gridiron Notes of the season and find it to be a helpful place to learn about exciting news and information. Now, let's get started!

And, what a day to get started, as there's nothing like hearing information about a brand-new Madden game! First off, congrats to our latest cover athlete Patrick Mahomes! He had an amazing MVP season last year and is the definition of a superstar. We sat down with Mahomes during the cover shoot a few months back and got a sneak peek into what it feels like to play for the Chiefs on Sundays.

“The first time I ever ran out the tunnel in front of that crowd, to hear the eruption of that crowd that first time, it was almost like it was quiet because it was so loud if that makes any sense.”

Don’t miss our full Mahomes interview. Now, let's discuss two innovations coming to Madden NFL 20: Face of the Franchise: QB1 and Superstar X-Factors.

Face of the Franchise: QB1

Face of the Franchise: QB1 is our new Career Campaign that kickstarts your franchise this year. We made two graphics that quickly explain some important details of what Face of the Franchise: QB1 is all about. The first image is what you do in the new experience.

The second is a list of the ten schools available to select in the College Football Playoff part of the Campaign.

First, you choose between ten Division 1 schools. From there you will fill in details about your quarterback and make decisions about what type of quarterback you will be. Up next, you will be competing in the College Football Playoff. You will play up to two full games and your performance will impact your draft stock. Once you play through the College Football Playoff, you will then start the process of the NFL Combine.

As a quarterback prospect, you'll be asked a couple of questions by NFL coaches and then throw passes to receivers at the combine. After you finish this process, you'll then wait to find out where you will be drafted in the league.

All the decisions you made, and your on-field performance will dictate where you will land on draft day. Once drafted you'll start your NFL career. At this point, you will start your typical Franchise experience, but your quarterback will be unique to the Face of the Franchise: QB1 experience.

We will be diving into more Face of the Franchise: QB1 details on Thursday, May 2 at 7 p.m. EST on twitch.tv/madden, where you will hear straight from the developers on Madden's latest Career Campaign and new details coming to Franchise mode itself, including the Scenario Engine! For those that would rather read, we will be publishing an article at the same time right here on Gridiron Notes.

Superstar X-Factors

Next up, let's go over a few details about Superstar X-Factors. In total there will be around 50 Superstar X-Factor players and over 30 additional Superstar players. The difference between the two are the Zone abilities and Superstar abilities. Zone abilities are best described as once-a-season moments that only the league's best can pull off, while Superstar abilities are traits that are unique to some of the most talented players that you see each and every game.

In total there are over 20 Zone abilities for the 50 Superstar X-Factor players and over 140 Superstar abilities. Each game you will see and feel the difference because of these special traits.

We're excited to provide even more detail about Superstar X-Factors on Thursday, May 9 at 7 p.m. EST on twitch.tv/madden, where we will sit down with the development team to provide further insight into how Superstar X-Factors is being tuned so that it will make stars feel like stars, the game more fun, and balance competitive play. We will also have a blog that will detail this out for those that miss the livestream.

In total, we will be doing five livestreams to explain the finer details of Madden NFL 20, straight from the development team. Additionally, we will be running community surveys where we want to hear from you about how we're doing as a community team when it comes to communication about our game. Stand by for more details on this as we will discuss at the end of each show what the surveys will be.

Thanks for taking the team to learn more about Madden NFL 20 here on Gridiron Notes, and we look forward to seeing you next week for the Face of the Franchise: QB1 and Franchise mode stream!

Oh before we forget! The Madden NFL 20 Reveal Trailer – Face of the Franchise ft. Patrick Mahomes can be viewed below. Its focus is not to dive deep into features of Face of the Franchise: QB1 but to make you feel what it's like to be a superstar in Madden NFL 20!

We also have our three First Look Screenshots of the year. Check them out below.

Is custom team going to be available on Madden 20 for PC?

What about being able to control both teams when playing a game?
  • I want to know why you don’t have offensive and defensive coaches , and please fix the Jumbotrons and I don’t understand why you guys can’t tell us . The difference in franchise modes . What if I don’t play face of Franchise mode . Can I play regular franchise mode , with owners, or coaches with 32 teams . And the Detroit Lions now have cheerleaders why can’t you put them in game

In qb1 is it possible to be the 1st overall pick? If not what's the highest you can possibly be drafted?
  • All of this sounds good and all. But I'm not biting yet. They told us before we complain or say what we don't like about the game, to play it first and then speak. So does that mean we're getting a demo?? And not the demos that get passed out via Twitter. I'm talking about the actual open beta so everyone can give EA an opinion. Not just those of a few.

Can you please bring back orginal online team play like in madden 25 . I am not a fan of the MUT online team play . Will not purchase game if it doesn not bring back orginal online team play. It was fun to play on the same team with friends agansit other players or even against the CPU.
  • Will we be getting a fully customizable league in franchise mode? Will there be legends for use in regular coach mode?
  • EA has a history of selling a balloon inflated to the point it's ready to pop, then giving you a game that is really a balloon that was taken out the bag and shaken really well and handed to you. I said I would not but Madden 20 because I'm tired of spending the little money I have on a really bad bad game that only cares about Ultimate Team.... Here's a selling point, focus on the core gamers for once.you know, the people that buy the game every single year. The casual fans will always be there. 20 will be the first game in the long history of madden I have not bought and played.
  • Number 1 concern is STRENGTH MATTERING IN BLOCKING. Offensive Linemen need to pancake Defensive Backs in blocking. WRS and RBs shouldnt be able to manhandle Defensive tackles either. (This should make that weak box mechcanic that pancakes everyone including defensive tackles at the same time disappear.) #2 Remove WR/DB frozen animations which happen after an interception, or dumbout animations that left recievers wide open for no reason. #3bring back mable coverages/fix cloud flat glitches so we can cover deep corner routes with zone coverages again. #4 Allow Online Franchise commissioners to reset game outcomes for disonnected games.

I really wish we could fully customIze our online CFMs by being able to change divisions/conferences. You could really help balance your league like that. Would also be nice to customize playoffs as well if you wanted just division winners, 16 team, or even a 32 team bracket if you wanted
  • So in about 2 weeks - EA play is going to try to convince me that Madden 20 is EA getting this title back on track?

These Weekly streams certainly haven't done it.
Past history of Madden releases have only told me that EA will LIE & MISLEAD in game promotion.

I don't care how many hard working devs you put on the screen promising things are better now - THE ONLY PROOF will be to see it in action. Your promises (EA) are worthless.

    Remember the Madden Nextgen trailer?
Remember how the Ignite engine was to give us real player motion & living worlds & Real A.I.?
Remember how physics were going to really up realism in Madden?
Remember how Frostbite was going to really open player movement (as it does in FIFA)?

My point, is I can not - will not - trust your word.
    Just saying:
    "We fixed it"
    "We care about Franchise again"
"We really looked at things differently"
These are just more words, and that is not going to get me to buy another Madden.

@Baron_Jets , (cool profile pic) you don't have to trust us blindly. If you have lost faith in us completely I strongly urge you to not buy it without trying it out or reading up on it. If you aren't satisfied with what you see then you can move on.

I will say that we aren't here to trick you into buying a game, we are trying our best to cater to the needs of the community which isn't always easy. Modes like "Face of the Franchise: QB1" have been implemented due to overwhelming feedback. We've opened up our Title update conversations to gather input from our players and for Madden 20 we are trying to gather feedback directly in-game.

    We are trying.

Madden messes up on the little things all the time. In the backbreaker football game. You could reach for the end zone when close. Madden been around for years and won’t include such little details. The franchise mode needs to go back to how it was in 07. The career mode needs to go back to 07. A lot of madden features needs to go back to 07!

That's why I keep checking in.

The fact is that Madden hasn't been made for me {an offline franchise player} for years.

I just need to see a lot of proof to promises being made before ever picking up this title again.
(see my old post for my feelings on the matter)

I respect what you guys are doing,
    I thank you,
now please show us the goods.

It's there going to be strip sacks?

Real player motion for all 22?

Is franchise mode going to have team stats records, playoff records in game tabs of league leaders?

Does every satdium have it's own unique feel?

Will weather matter ? Can the user be able to change it on or off in franchise settings?

How much customisation is in the game as far as cleats, jerseys, field, and stadiums?

Offline franchise, we dont need to totally reshape NFL, but allow more control over relocation teams given, but dont lock names to set town, any from list for any city. Uniform color n styles, please allow control even if just 5 or 6 template styles, if I can use my city, my team name, and my color scheme, and uniform design, I'd be good. Also wont do QB mode because NCAA fans are loyal, I'd rather play as made of college team and change college once drafted than play with ONES given

First time poster long time madden player.

When will we get an idea of players and team overalls for online h2h play?
  • I can’t stress this enough make franchise mode more of a franchise feeling not this your just a HC and that’s it like keep updating whether it’s offline or the cloud and include morale for the players if they not getting playing time or not getting thrown to or backs not getting enough touches like come on make it realistic

They have just been saying July. Usually its a few weeks before launch so I would expect something in the week after the 4th or the following. There is a post coming later today on ratings but I think it just about the new scale, not anything specific for individuals or teams.

I wanna know why Dak Prescott, Carson Wentz, and Jared Goff don’t have a superstar trait i feel like they’ve earned a spot to have one and also Amari Cooper deserves a superstar trait also
