Yeah Ven, I already saw your opinion on this before and I get what you're saying.
I'm curious on your view on this subject after the game is actually released and you'll spend some time with your new game and your deprioritized goalie position
It's already (and always was) "deprioritized"... You're talking like NHL 18 will bring in a new status quo that will surprise me. LOL!
I actually might be surprised if human goalies are improved from NHL 17 and can compete with the scorers, but we know that's not gonna happen. Not if the current "goalies gotta be sniped" because reasons attitude is still in place. Still, if there are enough workable tools and a few of the more glaring bugs/glitches can be fixed... Who knows?
Correct me if I'm wrong...but the way I understood it was that the 3s mode was a single player mode, online vs or offline...the 3 v 3 eashl is basically just playing a full game of ot. The fast paced arcade version I think would be a lot of fun if it were all humans, but I think a realistic 3v3 on big ice is going to get old quick. Then again, I'm all for any game mode that takes the A.I. out of the equation
3 vs. 3: I think it's going to be the new "flavour of the month" for NHL 18. It's going to be quick, simple, mindless fun. Perfect for the casual crowd who don't necessarily want to bother with learning all the rules and complexity of the sport. Just jump on the ice and do neat stuff like score highlight reel goals and land huge over the top hits. Now, is it going to be the mode that takes over EASHL? I don't think so. As fun as 3 v 3 might end up being, it's going to be far too superficial for it to be viable for very long. There's a reason why games like NBA Jam or even NFL Blitz (though extremely fun and competitive), aren't around anymore. Also, although I believe that 3 v 3 will be a huge hit on Youtube, Twitch and Mixer and the other streaming sites, the excitement will peter down quickly once all the novelty wears off. In fact, 3 v 3 might take away some of the shine away from the main modes of NHL 18 after people will have seen the same dekes, and hits, and defensive plays a BAJILLION times. The other aspect is 3 vs. 3 with Goalies (or 4 v 4). I think that if most of the bugs and glitches can be ironed from the current state of the goalies in NHL 17, then SKILLED Goalies may have a better chance in this mode. Sure, we'll still have to endure getting lit up by 3 or 4 times the amount of goals we'd normally see in 6s games, but we'll likely also end up with that same multiplier for saves made (and probably spectacular ones too). And that's ok, as long as Goalies go into this mode knowing they're not gonna be able to keep a GAA under 3.00 and a save % above 600.
The reason these games aren't around anymore isn't due to some kind of diminished replay value or fun factor, the companies just stopped making them, they would still sell fairly well if they were made again.
There is a market for a mode like this, I never bought NHL 17 because of how bad this series got, but saw what they are trying with NHL 18. If they can get the skating/animation to feel better/more responsive, then this mode would have a real chance of taking over EASHL, especially considering what i've heard about the modes population over the last year or 2.
My hope would be that the game would function better with less/no AI involved and less people in the game altogether, I will definitely be checking it out in the beta when it starts.
I agree. That's why this year NBA Playgrounds was a popular download. It's a fun game, good for a few moments with some buddies. But it's not something you're going to play for long. In fact, the few friends on my list who were playing it non-stop when it dropped are not even playing it anymore.
Again, the problem with these types of games is that the companies that put them out have to keep it going, they have to keep things fresh or their userbase just becomes bored with the shallow gameplay. New players, new arenas/courts to play in, new moves to unlock and/or download, new skins, new game modes. That's how a game like Rocket League has stayed strong since the 2 years since it came out and its userbase is still growing today. It also helps if these game types don't come out every year.
If EA can keep 3 vs 3 fresh throughout the year, with new players to unlock, maybe some vintage jerseys, new arenas in new venues (how about a neon pond hockey rink?), unlockable moves, etc. I'd love for 3 vs 3 to eventually become it's OWN game, separate from EA's NHL series and grow even more. Unlock Classic Pros for your team. Goofy Custom Equipment. Power Ups. The more over the top, the better.
I have absolutely no interest in 3 on 3 play at the moment, I feel it's a just another step away from real hockey. Current state of play is bad enough, although it's not deliberate I expect.
It's like the devs think that real hockey isn't exciting enough, so they have to bring this gimmicky game mode to attract casuals / kids / idiots / whatever. Or maybe they've given up fixing all the issues in the game, so they come up with this silly mode, where it doesn't even matter? Seems like the dev team has lost its passion for NHL hockey, if it ever had one. I am surprised all this comes from Canada frankly.
With the 3 on 3 modes, mouthguards, make your own mascot and what not, you have to wonder have they put ANY effort or recources in fixing the core game and online experience? I doubt it. Well see it in the beta, but at the moment it's 50/50 whether it's worth buying NHL18 if you play EASHL mostly. HUT certainly isn't it. I am surprised there's so little of any new features for HUT which used to be their dependable money-maker?

Not the actual devs tho.
It's a business decision as an (legitimate) attempt to raise the sales. In this case decision by Rammer and PR department.
It might work or not. We'll see.
But I think it's very important to know who is (and who's not) responsible for this heavy decision. In all good or bad things that this decision might bring to the series.
Yeah, i dont think you guys realise the devs just do their job and what they are told. A few of the higher up devs make a pitch/PowerPoint presentation of ideas for what they think the next nhl should be, why, and then they get the greenlight from above. 18 is built this way to reach a specific market and increase sales, with a few core features sprinkled in to appease the rest. If the method works, god help all of us hardcore fans.
I won't be playing this 3 vs 3 mode as it's not hockey to me and I bet the majority of my friends won't be playing it either.
Just give us our 12 player private drafts back so we can play amongst ourselves.
It appears I'll be joining the increasing amount of people that only purchase and play this game for the various online leagues while playing the random drop in or club game here and there.
Was excited about this until I read that 3v3 EASHL will be on a regulation sized sheet. Not having this on the mini rink is a huge miss.
No space would require a unique element of teamwork and quick puck movement. Full ice 3v3 in video game form will just result in people spamming the A button with the 7 miles of open ice they'll be afforded in this setup.
Is it confirmed that the NHL version is just versus/couch co-op? Or will we be able to play co-op with friends online?

Hi Jon.
They have two versions, the sim version on the regulation rink that plays just like regular EASHL you know. The arcade version, with money pucks, over the top announcer, 25% smaller rink, ice-overlay graphics, and other stuff.
Goalie "gamechanger".....comes in to promote and shill for EAs new 3v3 arcade mode that uses the goalie position as a glorified pylon. Or can goalies make ridiculous over the top arcadey saves too?
I'm sad you still feel that way barrett. I'd love for you to see what it's like to be a gamechanger but I'm sure they wouldn't let you within 100ft of the EA building.
Is it wrong that this made me literally laugh out loud?
I remember when it was the most competitive in NHL 11. Even playing drop in games, you would come across seriously good players on almost a nightly basis.
How about those old school drop in rivalries? I would hear people on the mic after picking teams and positions say "i know the other team's goalie", and immediately i knew they would try to take advantage of my weakness, sure enough that would be their first, second, even third attempt on goal.
Even in 16, everyone kind of blended together in one ugly mess of "whoever that scrub is", although part of that is the game mechanics leveling the field for the sake of "fun".

Absolutely... One Hunnid!
Ya, we'll see. There's always hope

Based on what intel?

i tried explaining this on another thread, i believe.
it wasn't received well.
The people who responded negatively were the people who buy no matter what. I swear, not buying 17 helped improve my health this past year XD
