NHL 18 Beta Feedback Thread

  • Something is going to have to be done about puck ragging in EASHL 3v3 or I suspect the mode will die quickly.

When you have to send two of your players after the guy with the puck it almost always results in a two-on-one or a breakaway when you only have one player left to cover the rest of the ice.

Puck ragging isn't as big an issue with more players on the ice but in this case it's a bad situation.

Didn't almost everybody see this coming though? I could have sworn at least half the people against the inclusion of EASHL 3v3 posted this as a possibility.

Nope. That is the nature of ENDLESS 3 vs 3.

In OT, yer game ends when you score so there is no real extended periods of ragging.

Now... it's endless 3 vs 3 so yeah.... enjoy.

And by the way, yeah, If I get a lead 3 vs. 3 in EASHL then we are raggin the puck on you.

Has anybody ever experienced the game booting you back to the Xbox (or PS4) dashboard after a really crushing hit against the boards? Happened twice to me and my club over the weekend. 1st time our RW got absolutely stapled into the boards, game paused hard and then everyone was ejected from the game and found themselves on the X1 dashboard....

....When we got back to the DR, the match didn't count at all even though it was the end of the 2nd period.

Also had this. Massive hit, all 3 of my team got the PS4 Blue Screen. Reported & attached video through PS4s report option. I assume thats all the dev teams wants us to do with these beta bugs?

    EASHL player

come and get the puck then.
  • For presentation/audio, can we please get the following goal horns fixed for release. Some of them have been updated, others are the same; Minnesota, Florida are downright terrible. Columbus(pitch is off), Montreal (pitch is wrong again), Washington you can barely hear it.

Commentary. Was any work done with this at all? In the beta all that was done was in the overtime, the EA team took the "score" line from the Game 7 overtime Stanley Cup game winning goal and has that available along with the "score" line from when you score typically with a minute to go left in the game. Those two lines are also present throughout any game you play. Those are the only changes. Hopefully more commentary was recorded from Doc, Eddie, and Ferraro and was just not present in the Beta because it was 100% practically the same exact audio.
  • My biggest problem with the beta is the same stupid animations from 17, awkward puck pick ups, weird turns, terrible goalie movements/reactions to certain angle shots, bad skating pivots and on and on.

Can't help but agree with the whole skating in sand arguement, no acceleration from certain turns and poor agility in everything except using small cuts while skating straight.

Hitting is identical to 17, inconsistent and frustrating. One game I can hit everything, the next it's pinball instead of hockey.

Love the new skill stick but controls could be more streamlined since the new dekes aren't all that difficult to pull off.

AI is much improved in terms of passing and seem to actually use the tools provided to them for once not just skate backwards and do nothing. More consistent challenging at the zone entries, better pass blocking. A real bright spot in the beta in my opinion

Presentation: Can we PLEASE get goal/shots on net replays fixed? You finally added new angles and they are awesome from a presentation perspective. Yet all of the replays that are focused on the net/goalie play way too fast during a game. You still can't make sense of what was even going on.

I was happy when you came out and said this was going to be fixed finally along with the new angles yet it's still broken. I've been asking for this fix since this gen started.

Also can we get a toggle or something to have in-game audio play while the goal replays are shown like how it was in last gen? No clue why this has been absent but the presentation is much better when we can actually hear the crowd react during the play. Not to mention the crowd still sounds bored.

That must be EA's way of saying "Please stop winning the Stanley Cup Pittsburgh" XD

May the Rangers, Islanders, Flyers, Leafs, Canucks, Sharks, Blues, Wild, BlueJackets (lol yeah right), Panthers, Sabres, Jets, Senators, Capitals, Coyotes, or Predators please get a taste?

Don't you think it's very telling that EA doesn't give us the opportunity to play a normal offline game to test out the gameplay?

I mean 3vs3 is completely different from the setting and I don't care at all about online play because it's such a pain to play against all those kiddies just trying to cheese you.

I'm still very upset about the fact that they simply don't care about the requests of roster sharing and that they again won't introduce an in-depth franchise mode like Madden has FOR YEARS.

This will be a very hard decision for me. I love hockey but the series is just stuck in development **** for a long time now.

    VERY PRECISE
There are forums and communities that have been asking for bigger development in regards to offline play....THIS ENTIRE FRANCHISE STARTED OFFLINE!!!
    its full online push.....
Offline players ask for roster sharing and at least continuous roster updates......
    HUT gets updates instead
Cant get a post draft roster update...BUT sure enough HUT has new junior players representing NHL teams....
Guaranteed rosters will be outdated and wrong upon release in September....
REASON BEING.....A FAKE LETTER PLAYERS DIDN'T SIGN....guess HUT doesn't need the LETTER/"FIRST SHIFT PLAYED" excuse any more

The fact BETA isn't showing 1player vs 2player or 1player vs CPU...or a simply EXHIBITION scares me.
I either think its NHL17 and the 3vs3 AI/features arent in OFFLINE modes like FRANCHISE....
or the AI for ONLINE isn't the same as the AI offline..

    Gameplay
As far as Online AI i like that that CPU teamates dont interfere as much as last year....
    finally playing thier postiions
unfortunately the goalies in my opinon are not as good...constantly out of position...bad angles
    little recovery

It seems to me you cant take a nice quick shot anymore....especially a half slap
it whiffs everytime....very frustrating in 17
one timers from D to D are still terrible

THE ALL NEW D STICK Is simply awesome from a D point of view,....but it was kinda in 17 without the control so to speak

    BETA was kinda fun
but I have to admit ONLINE is not my thing as mentioned....Id really like to see how the CPU teams play out

  • Puck raggin is a serious issue since my players are in quicksand 90%+ of games. Love when its so bad you try and pass to the player behind you net, and the goalie sends it there, and the games gives you a player in the circle. ****, fix you terrible goddamn game EA. NOT BUYING THIS GARBAGE.
NO OTHER GAME BEHAVES THIS WAY.

ITS PATHETIC YOU CANT GET IT TOGETHER AFTER ALL THIS TIME.

    DO NOT BUY

    Colour blind mode?

Yes, ever heard of color blindness? Plenty of people have it. And many games have it.

"Red–green color blindness is the most common form, followed by blue–yellow color blindness and total color blindness.[2] Red–green color blindness affects up to 8% of males and 0.5% of females of Northern European descent"
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_blindness

Like I said, many games have colorblind modes. As far as I can remember, Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer already had it over 10 years ago. Many FPS games have it. WoW has it. League of Legends has it.

There are many ways to implement it. In my opinion the easiest way to do it is to let players customize colors on their screen -- shirts, puck highlight color, puck color, icons above players' heads etc.

None of their streaming partners are colour-blind, so you are hooped.

    * When playing online versus let us actually SAVE the setups like lineups/strategies. Took me good few mins to set up my line ups and then havr my opponet leave during the matchmaking only to be booted to the main menu. All settings reseted to default. So save option please!
    * My control settings are still having mind of their own. Sometimes im wondering why im backskating without pressing L2. I go to the setting during match to find out i have default settings... after the game I go to the settings and i see my own settings there. How does this happen?
    * why cant i see my opponent or atleast choose a filter to only play against oppponents with green connection and against teams with similiar rating.
    * In EASHL L1 is being abused to even higher extend than in 17. It's the best way to get the puck away from your opponent at the boards. It's super fast, nice reach and you can't get penalty. It's being abused in 6v6 top lvl in europe at least.

Just few things that came to my head. I wont even go to the goalies since you guys clearly wont make anything to them.
  • The net coming off its moorings is a pretty cool feature in theory. In the beta, however, it can be done on purpose. I've seen defenders including myself do it accidentally and stop an opponent's attack that way. One goalie also tells me that he can do it by bumping into his own goal with free skating. He actually recorded a brief video that I saw of him doing it to prevent an opponent's breakaway. This is definitely something that should be looked into, I think.

Another issue that I haven't seen reported here is taking away the puck by spamming L1/LB. This is very effective, especially if you're in a corner battling for the puck. It hardly ever results in a penalty. This exploit was already in NHL 17 and was used all the time between us European teams, but inexplicably they've made spamming it a lot faster in NHL 18 so that now it's more effective than ever.

which, if i recall, is why it was removed for years.

    The bad:

    1) Preset classes still exist instead of attribute based players for EASHL. Under no circumstance are preset players a preferred option to attribute based players. This particular RPG element was half the fun, because you were creating a player that was specific to your playing style and who you wanted him to be. There's just simply more investment here. I understand that sometimes attribute based players created difficulties with game balance, and probably players who found exploits via putting all their points into X combinations. But, currently, the badges are close to worthless. It's not as worthwhile to unlock player celebrations or stadium upgrades as it is to make your player better. I think the obvious solution is to have preset classes WITH attribute increases each time you prestige. You have 5 prestige levels. Prestige 1, you gain 1 point you can allocate anywhere, prestige 2, you gain 2 points, and so on and so forth. It would equate to a total of 15 extra attribute points you can designate to your player. In previous iterations that had attribute based players for EASHL, you were able to allocate something like 78 (!!!) total attribute points across all the categories (offense/defense/athleticism). So this is not to that extreme, but still gives you some freedom to make some adjustments to your player.

    2) Hitting is way over the top. This needs to be toned down. Every hit looks like some highlight reel explosion hit, like Brooks Orpik made love to Scott Stevens. It's incredibly unrealistic. Especially hitting/shoving from behind that causes you to constantly lose control of the puck. Stumble, fine, but if you get past someone, you shouldn't be able to knock them off the puck so easily -- or really at all -- via shoving/hitting from behind. This has been an issue with EA NHL games for awhile...

    3) A lot of weak goals where a shot is partially stopped/slowed down and the goalie is in position to stop it, then the goalie moves out of the way at the last second to let the puck slowly slide into the net. Usually goes into the butterfly but faces the boards perpendicular to the net, or at an angle to the side boards. It's weird. Seen this happen a few times now in maybe 20 games played.

    4) Controls; why not have the RS control your stick on offense AND defense, and let the RB be the modifier for hitting? What do you think:

    //Defense//
    RS = Defensive Stick
    RS PRESS = Poke Check
RS PRESS HOLD = Puck Chop
RB + RS = Body Check
RB + RS CLICK = Hip Check

    A = Stick Lift
    A Double Tap = Hook
A Hold = Stick Tie Up
    B = Catch Puck
B Hold = Squeeze body against boards
X = Small One Glove Shove (must be stationary, or pretty much stationary; think net front battles, post whistle)
X Hold = Grab / Pull opponent (must be stationary, or pretty much stationary; think net front battles, post whistle---- high risk of penalty if someone is trying to skate away from you when you do it)
    Y = Slash
    Y Hold = Pin
Y Double Tap = Fight Initiate

    5) 3v3 mode is a waste of time and resources when there are so many other issues that need attention

    6) Can we have C and A patches back for EASHL?

    The good:

    1) Defensive Stick was a long time coming. But could be implemented better (aforementioned)

    2) LB Stick on Ice / Block Shot; the ability to determine how you want to position your body/stick on the ice is a nice touch and allows better defense to cross crease one-timer attempts, etc.

    3) Puck doesn't feel as glued to sticks

    4) More pucks have deflected out of play than 17, but still could be more

    5) Nets can come off moorings again.

    6) Menus SEEM to be a little bit faster (lol)

    I'll think of more later.

Uhh.. you guys have banners covering half of the ice whenever you play against Pittsburgh in OVP. Just thought you should know that and fix it before release.
