NHL 18 Beta Feedback Thread

  • Same garbage as last year only with 3's.

Skater still moves like a tugboat, AI is really dumb, Checking is weak.

No attributes in EASHL is dumb, nothing to work towards, cant make your player better so that game mode is dead, eventually Im sure you will remove it saying people dont play it anymore. I have no need to have celebrations and arena unlocks its just stupid.

Just keep concentrating on NHL BLITZ and HUT this game is dead.

For only the second time in over 20 years I wont be buying NHL. The only other time was when you completely took out EASHL, Until you make some real changes Im done not buying NHL 17 again. I'll stick to Destiny 2 and Forza 7 instead of wasting time with this game.

To me, the game feels smoother in general. Puck pickups, pass interceptions/deflections and hits also seemed a little bit different and tighter, but will have to play more to be sure.
Agree with the defensive skill stick comments as well but I wanted to comment on this: this is what I noticed as well. It's hard to qualify explicitly, but overall the game just felt "tighter".

I do hope they don't nerf the DSS beased on the beta. Yes its working well, very well... perhaps too well? But once the forwards figure out the new deking system things should level out and if they nerf DSS then we will be back to OP offense again.
    Dad. Gamer. Rocker. Geek.
  • The Good:
    • DSS works better than I thought it would. With a little practice it's a very effective tool.
    • Picking your team, jersey, setup, etc before matching up in VS is great. Although options may need to be added to exclude national/all-star teams.
    • "Hold X to skip" during goal reviews is a nice add.

    The Bad:
    • I'm not a fan of the "behind the glass" camera angle prior to a lot of faceoffs. It's jarring and really doesn't add anything.
    • Something seems off with passing. Even with pass assist at my usual level of 35 the game seems to be making a lot of assumptions about where I want to pass the puck. This is really noticeable in the defensive zone where a simple pass from one corner to the other behind the net results in a pass to a player in front of the net about 25% of the time. This is a play that I've never had an issue with in previous years.
    • ( EASHL ) Checking seems to have been nerfed. Even with a Grinder or PFW putting my shoulder right into the chest of a guy cutting across the middle or skating straight down the boards only results in a slight nudge.
    • The AI in the defensive zone is still pants-on-head stupid. All I really want is for them to play the strategy that I've set up. I don't need them to "cover for me" if I briefly move a player slightly outside the current strategy's setup. For example If I'm set up in a collapsing strategy to take away the cross-crease pass but recognize my opponent is about to go for a D-to-D one-timer I should be able to move a winger up a bit for a few seconds to take that play away without the rest of my players losing their minds and running all over the place. If I make the wrong call and get caught out of position that's on me and I don't mind being punished for it. But I hate the AI trying to be "smart" and running all over the place.

    The Ugly:
    • ( EASHL ) In the post-game Player Summery screen having the current player highlighted in bright white while at the same time having some stats bright yellow makes those values near impossible to read. The highlighting shouldn't be that bright.
    • The player with the puck is still the most agile player on the ice by far. It seems even worse in the beta compared to NHL 17. Ridiculous.
    • Stick infractions are far too infrequent. I went five games before seeing a tripping penalty despite people flailing around with poke checks. I've only seen one human high-sticking/slashing penalty at all.

    The "Maybe It's Just Me":
    • Can anybody else do a simple move to the left or right on a breakaway? Whenever I get alone on the goalie my player completely loses the ability to move his stick to either side. In a glide I have to move my RS in the direction I want starting at the hash marks just to have a chance of getting the puck to that side by the time I reach the net.
    • Has the timing of one-timers changed? Playing EASHL threes my club had several two-on-none situations that resulted in nothing but a whiffed shot.
    • I've also noticed that there's some kind of delay between when I pick up a loose puck and when I can shoot it. There have been several situations that should have been a tap-in where my player would refuse to shoot the puck for a second or two after picking it up.
  • What can I say very disappointed. Skating / turning feel very sluggish slow

Yea the skating is brutal especially when trying to turn feels like I'm driving a truck just brutal. Ea your done !!
  • Yeah I'm on the fence. I use hybrid. (I'm not switching) I hate the swapping the buttons for stick lift and poke check. I got like a dozen penalties for slashing...didn't keep my stats for first 2 games. Lost a goal. So officially I have 2 goals in 5 games. The arcade threes is fun tho. Didn't try it online.

When I attempt to access the NHL 18 Beta Forum (http://answers.ea.com/t5/NHL-18/ct-p/nhl-18-en), I am being told that before I can access it I must download and launch the game. I have already downloaded the game and played it, but still am unable to access the beta forum.

Is anyone else having this issue or know how to fix it?

  • Played a lot of EASHL last night. Only mode I really care about so that's my focus here.

    The Good:
EASHL 3v3. Played a ton of this last night. Lots of fun and very challenging. The more skilled players benefit from this mode, meaning those who generally don't play much defense and rely on AI defenders will struggle. Very good addition.

EASHL is mostly the same, and that's a good thing. Best mode IMO. Team customization looks to be as deep as ever. One suggestion, because of the new 3v3 mode, a "defender" should be able to play as any skill set (sniper, playmaker, etc). Same goes for the center or winger. Let us decide if we want 3 snipers on the ice, or 3 defensive players, or whatever combination in between.

    The Bad:
The AI defenders in EASHL 3v3 are terrible. They let human skaters blow past them with minimal effort or moves. This mode shouldn't be all breakaways all the time.

AI positioning on offense is slightly improved but still could use some work. Guys just come to a stop instead of crashing the net.

As many have said, the skating ability of players needs fixed badly. Just make it smoother.

STOP HAVING THE NET COME LOOSE. I understand the realistic approach, but this just slows the game and adds nothing. Nobody will notice or care if the net never comes off its moorings.

    The Ugly:
Had a team score a goal against us when the puck never went in the net.

The jerseys are very messy right now, half the names and numbers are cut off.

Human Goalie still gets frozen in place at times. Also a lot of ugly goals still get scored when the human is in a perfect position.

Overall NHL 18 will still be a blast, even with the issues. EASHL continues to be the best game mode in any sports video game.

  • After playing 15 or so games, I feel that NHL 17 + 3's = NHL 18. They literally just added a new game mode. The rest of the game is copy and paste. Very disappointing .

For the love of God please fix TPS!!!!!

Slow, quick sand, a chore, wonky turns/pivots.
  • Will preface my feedback with the fact that i am NOT an eashl player. I typically play offline be a gm, online vs, and HUT.

I am again, quite disappointed with the game. I gave them a pass on the initial jump to next gen, then gave them a pass on the subsequent year to "catch up", but at this stage, this game should be seeing some actual game enhancing feature sets released every year.

My thoughts on the beta are:
    3s:
    - I played a few games when the beta first downloaded, as i didn't have time to get in a full vs game.
    - NBA jam type game.... I hated NBA jam
    - I may have already run my course through this game feature before the full release comes out
    - It's scary to think that they must have invested substancial dev cycles for a feature i just don't see many of their core market players playing

    online vs gameplay:
    - is this really any different than nhl 17???
    - Skating still sucks and remains clunky, unnatural, and a deterrent in creating any kind of realism to a game which uses words like "physics" in each years marketing material
    - the defensive skillstick seems ok, but also unnatural. All i want is that if i position my guy such that he or his stick is waving around between an opposing player and his pass target, the puck should hit me or my stick and either bouncy in a direction/speed that makes sense according to the law of physics. Not every pass breakup/interception leads to thedefensive player gaining possession of the puck.
    - from an AI perspective, i also hate how easy it is for a pass to go between 3 offensive players right to the slot for a slap shot attempt.
    - Passing in general in the game seems really messed up. A player can't complete a simple pass on the forehand without it hitting a near by defenders random poke check attempt, yet a player in the offensive zone corner can backhand a perfect pass between 3 defenders to the slot for a 1 timer
    - Boardplay is still ridiculous, outdated, with no attempt since its inception to make it an actual board battle
    - Net front battles are still just 2 guys glued together, ugh
    - they add all these dekes, yet when i slip a guy in on a breakaway he has complete stone hands for simple side to side dekes

I hate to ever question a person on their professional competence or make statements like people need to be replaced, but i really feel like the EA NHL team has gotten stale, as such so have their ideas, their innovation, leaving a very stale annual release again.

It feels like the kind of development investment decisions they make are just so out of whack. Like this 3s concept, the expansion draft, etc, are all such one off features (ie. something a player may try once or twice before gravitating back to what most people buy the game for, hockey game play).

Fix skating, fix passing mechanics, fix board/net battles from the ground up.... that's what the gameplay requires in my opinion.

forget expansion draft, 3s, how about finally introducing the concept of signing Upcoming UFAs mid season in Be a GM?! I have heard rumours that it's actually quite complex from an algorithm/logic perspective, but why not dumb down the problem. At least allow the GM to see the UFAs "expectation of next contract" midseason. That would allow a much more realistic trade deadline and offseason. Again, comes down to lacklustre innovation from the team. You don't need to build the complete solution to a problem, but there are creative workarounds to mitigate the current gap.

    sorry for the novel...

After playing last night here are my impressions of the beta

If you've had an issue with anything in this game the past three years, it's probably still an issue.

EASHL 3's is a blast, I will probably play this mode the most. The extra space really allows creativity to shine. I saw more cycling in 2 drop-in games with a bunch of randoms last night than I've seen in years in this game.

I love the Defensive skill stick, I just wish it was always live with the RS, and you used RB to modify for a hit. I'll play around with the settings tonight to see if that is possible.

The between the legs dekes are pretty fun to try and pull off, I actually like those, regardless of how ridiculous they are.

The rest of the dekes confused me, and everyone else I played with last night, but with time it will get better. Overall I think it's an improvement.

Turning at low speeds, quick stops, and accelerating from a stand still all seem to be worse. This is my opinion after playing most games as an offensive d man. This needs to be improved across the board.

    NHL 3's is lame

The new VS front end is a really nice idea, but there are some issues. I don't personally care what team I play, but others have rightfully complained about matching up against All - Star teams. I'm more concerned with connection quality, whether the opponent position locks, and how many opponents I'm playing against. It would be nice to see those things before jumping into the game. Either way, it is nice to only have to set your lineup/opening strategies once ber "session".

EASHL customization looks largely the same, but I didn't look at any club options, just player stuff.

    SUMMARY:

The game needs to be better, and at this point, 4 years in, it's a shame it has as many problems as it does. AI is terrible in VS. In one game of 3's, we played against 2 people and a bot, and the bot was a defensive beast, doing the thing where it reads your controller inputs and moves almost before you do when you try and change direction. I saw someone else say the AI in their 3's game was attrocious. So it sounds like we still have variably skilled AI still.

While NHL 18 hasn't really addressed the underlying problems, the addition of the defensive skill stick is a nice step in the right direction. Adding 3's EASHL has injected some fun back into the game, which has been sorely lacking. I went from not buying to buying based on my time with the game, only because I enjoyed playing 3's so much.

EDIT: Almost forgot to **** about the matchmaking thing again, "Use best game location". If there is anything making me reconsider purchasing 18, it's this stupid option. Truly, in the harshest way possible regarding this, get your **** together EA.

    A few things:

NHL Threes is a fun addition. It's something I might see myself play offline during a downtime and maybe try a few games of it online.

EASHL 3 v 3 is dumb; why can't I pick G position if I search for 3s in EASHL??? I thought that was supposed to be a thing... Guess not.

Gameplay wise, why is the lateral acceleration still so fushluggenah high yet again?? We have Creative Dekes, there's no reason to allow fowards with the puck to just swivel left and right without any penalties to their puck control/stability. C'mon!

Speaking of the Creative Dekes, the between the legs stick move seems to glitch out the goalies a lot. Saw one of my teammates use it to get two easy goals cuz the Goalie just spazzes out when he sees the player quickly enter and exit that deke a few times in a row. There should be a penalty in puck control for using dekes like that...

Goalies feel a little better (more about that in the Goalie feedback thread).

All in all I'm pleasantly surprised so far, but I haven't played a whole lot of games. Something I hope to rectify in the next couple of days.

"Hold X to skip" during goal reviews is a nice add.

I don't know what they've done with period transitions, but this needs to be available for end of periods/intro for next period. '17 is a spam X button simulator because their game is so slow and unresponsive.

Also..my god.."Play next game" or go right into "Sim Next Game" instead of returning to the menu. It's especially horrible in '17 because of their slow-as-molasses menu system, transitions, and loading.
It feels like the kind of development investment decisions they make are just so out of whack. Like this 3s concept, the expansion draft, etc, are all such one off features (ie. something a player may try once or twice before gravitating back to what most people buy the game for, hockey game play).

Exactly. 100%. This is where EA fails every time, and I don't understand it. It's like they want to ignore the main problems with the core game because they don't feel they can fix anything, so they just attempt "new" things each year to cover their butts.

Also, I don't like the Penguins and always replace them in Franchise, but EA..it's not difficult to get their yellow correct. This was in '17 too.

It's sunburst. NOT canary. It's glaringly obvious that it's too bright and blatantly the wrong color. Come on guys. At least get the kits right.

Oh, and the anti-aliasing on the shoulders is still garbage and fuzzy at the seams. Yet another carry-over from '17.

The skating is really a problem and honestly im surprised its not a #1 fix priority

AMen, that's it, that's the entire problem with this game, fix this you fix everything.

  • So over the past few years I've studied NHL more than I did books in school, so again this year after playing over 10 hours of the beta here is my goods and bads to NHL 18 so far.

Skating-feels clunky and awkward, turning with or without the puck feels like I'm driving a macktruck, top end speed doesn't exist unless your playing offline, online you are slow, heavy, and feel more like a 70overall Jordan Tootoo than a playmaking Winger. Agility doesn't exist either.

Shooting-feels great I'd say this is where shooting should have been in NHL 17 I miss the net but not even a third of the missed nets in NHL 17 I have nothing to complain about.

DEKING-now you may have noticed I put it in all caps because this year was supposed to be amazing when it came to fluidity and creativeness with the new Deking system, now yes they hit it right on the button, but after trying all these dekes online they were normally always failed dude to insane AI reads or the overpowered like check from behind, due to the fact Dmen get an in-game speed boost if a fwd is on a breakaway, if your gonna give the Dmen Karlsson Rocket like speed on back checks than Fwds should have increased puck control and Deming along with agility to try and avoid the insane back checks. Now back to Deking I love what they did and the Deking is complex but fun and gives the game a better feel, just wish the agility and awareness was turned up more.

3on3 Arcade-amazing fast paced hitting action turn down the hitting, and up the stick checking and that's how EASHL should be played.

-EASHL Player creation- Again for a 2nd year EA catered to the people who couldn't play enough to level and get there legends and groundout there games to edit there pros to the way they feel they should play, and left all of us experienced die hard fans who enjoyed that aspect in the dust, while HUT has been getting overhauls of new stuff EASHL is taking steps backward, extremely disappointed in them not giving us back what we want.

-overall opinion-there is things to fix and change and it needs to happen now or I'll be switching to a full-time Fifa player, Bring back NHL 11-12 remastered.

  • I'm not a fan of the "behind the glass" camera angle prior to a lot of faceoffs. It's jarring and really doesn't add anything.

Yea, this is just a really weird decision. There's some angles where it just feels like you're some creepy guy peeking out to watch the game. Adding extra cutscenes seems really silly in a game that already takes too long.

On a different front, holding x to skip goal reviews is a huge feature, but they need to make this more clear that it exists. It only shows up if you're holding the button down, but should probably be there all the time so people know you can do it.
  • the hit x to skip feature... why do you have to hold it for like 5-10 secs to skip something that takes 15 secs. If it was me I would just make it hit x to skip, no reasonable person wants to watch any of that crap anyway. But it doesn't matter since they require both teams to hit the X and about 75% of the time the other team never hits it.

    so pointless feature.

and yes the new cutscenes and such are mostly just annoying.

i swear these guys either dont play their own game or they are just really bad at judgement. every year there are more and more pieces of this game that i say why would they do that? its so obvious that this other way is better.
