New Skating Feature: RPM TECH

Prev134
Thank You! Lamented for years the current sluggish skating the NHL games currently have.

Not sure why people missed the part in trailer where Crosby starts, stops, accelerates and then explodes behind the net. Ugh! Thank you .

You have restored faith in this customer and am definitely hyped for September. Thank you and well done :)

Honestly that little 5 seconds of skating is enough for my to be excited! A skeptic genuinely excited!? Bravo EA, bravo.

This will be getting covered more extensively sometime over the summer. Exciting stuff. Hopefully changes how the game is played again.

  • At this point I'm cautiously optimistic. Until I play it on the wrong server and see similar results, I'm holding my judgment.

I still think those results could be exactly replicated in nhl 18 if they adjusted the sliders. Hopefully with more video I'll be proven wrong.

If you crank-up the sliders to beyond fast, sure. Unfortunately the animations weren’t there for those results to happen at normal or below normal game speed which is where a lot of sim sliders (and default online) are at.

I’m actually more excited at the OFFLINE immersion and possibilities with this engine than the online.

I had way more fun in the few games that I got to play with NHL 19 then I did for the entire year of 18. I found myself playing until I was too frustrated with pickups and control way too often this year.

The focus was responsiveness and control with the new skating and I feel like it nailed it. Hopefully it holds true to that during the beta when server population spikes up.

Does the new skating engine mesh well with puck pickups?

    Potentially?
RPM also involves a physics overhaul that will make collisions appear more realistic. Ho described players anticipating and bracing for hits, and said that thanks to improved follow-through animations, it will look like players really finish their checks. A bonus of the system is that it has also solved a long-standing problem in EA’s games: puck pickups. “We’ve basically completely addressed this issue,” said Ho.

I didn't notice any puck pick up issues in the games I played. If there was any I could have missed it because the skating felt fluid. I am one to yell profanity if my player misses any easy pucks.

a few people have said that puck pickups are much better... if that's true that is fantastic. If I had to make a list of my largest problems with EA hockey the past few years, skating engine, puck pickups are definitely in top 5.

The skating and pick ups are all I ever wanted to be changed the most so this is something I'm excited for. And I've said it on this forum tons of times how the real game of hockey is played with hard starts and stops, tight turns and pivots. All of which you can't do in NHL 18 at all, I try to play the video game how I play in real life and it's just frustrating to not be able to do these things. Your first 3 steps out of a stop are supposed to be explosive. You should be driving your toe into the ice and pushing off, instead we skate in a bubble around loose pucks helplessly without picking them up right now. Pulling back on the joystick to stop is garbage, you couldn't even get away with that slow stop in a rec scrimmage and for some reason they think it was acceptable in an NHL game. Crossovers look so nonchalant, the character doesn't get low and dig in. One thing that really annoys me is the puck protect. I use it all the time in the game because that's how you would play in real life on the half wall and a lot of the time every little bump sends your guy flying to the ice and you can't even carry on the battle for the puck, it's extremely unrealistic
  • This feature to me is most exciting because it affects the core gameplay in of itself which could make the game feel more fluid. I hope we can get a good feel for it if there is a beta and provide feedback on any tweaks we think would work.

Lol I have screamed and heard more profanity in parties this year than ever!!! It gets almost comical after a couple of hours playing with this years game.

Skating was the communities biggest concern with gameplay, awesome to see EA made additional changes to the TPS engine.

    High five to EA

So with the extra responsiveness to skaters does that mean goalies are going to be faster side to side because if the skating got better for the skaters it just means the goalies are gonna be having a harder time.

Oh trust me I've asked and been wondering the same thing. Because if it doesn't then our job just got even worse.

The Game Changers can’t discuss anything that hasn’t been revealed yet, so we’ll have to wait to find out. I’m really hoping for improvements to user goalies.
