Forward Accountability EASHL Drop Ins

I was playing right D and my left D was pretty good. He made good plays and was in great position for most of the game. One play in the 3rd he got deked pretty good forcing a 2 on 1 where I played the pass and the shooter fired a cheese rebound and got the rebound himself for the goal.

The center man, who hasn’t played an ounce of defense and has turned over the puck in the neutral zone countless times says “Left D you’re trash get out.”

I think people need to understand that as a defenseman your mistakes turn into Goals for the opposition. Forwards can try again and again to score but when they make costly turnovers it’s all good.

What are your thoughts on this? I don’t care it is what it is.

  • Lol. Trust me, its best not to even engage or entertain forwards when they open their mouth. Especially in Drop-in. You can not be rational to someone who is irrational, and quite often the times when I looked to engage a forward in truly breaking down why WE gave up a goal, and how it all started with their 20th giveaway, and them failing to get back or cover , they just retort with some useless comment "you're bad...blah blah"

Shame really. I despise such selfishness.
  • Come on man. It’s Drop-ins 101. All goals are Solely the fault of LD/RD/G. Some combination of those 3. Never mind mister “I shoot the puck from anywhere” LW. And then there’s blue “Straight line skating into every defender at the blue line” turnover machine. Last but not least there’s the ol’ center. Being a terrible forchecker. Leaving 3 on 2s for you and your D partner to defend all game. Chasing on D and leaving the slot wide open.

Tale as old as time man. Forwards get to make 15 mistakes every game with little to no consequence. As a result they rarely think goals are their fault.

Drop-ins are toxic, and for some reason, the toxicity seems to go hand in hand with lack of hockey knowledge.

My prime example would be the game where our centre tried to deke out the whole opposition three times in a row, causing a turnover every single time. After the third goal against us, he went on mic and with a lot of emotion said "Please goalie leave!! Just leave!"
The poor guy left, which in turn, made me choose to not play our centre a pass for the rest of the game.
That episode is the main reason why I turn off the sound whenever I play drop-ins. It's just not worth it.
  • Everyone should be held accountable. It is all about team defense and everybody needs to be on the backcheck. I play centre myself and I definitely play a 2 way game and help out as the third D as much as I can. While mistakes by d-men are usually magnified compared to forwards, some poor decisions are inexcusable. Things liking going for the hit as the last man back and missing it is just stupid. You have to be smart on D and make good decisions.

People like that are why I dont bother with dropins. And if you retorted with "Well you should be playing defense as a center" he would just be laughing at you.

  • I play forward and it is not uncommon for me to lead the teams I play on in defensive grade.

it's fairly simple: just don't turn the puck over, don't get smashed time after time holding the puck trying to get into the offensive zone and don't constantly cram passes to the other team.

that's why I was and am for a system that punishes you (your PRO) for garbage grades.

Yes but then you're at the mercy of EA. The old grading system was brutal, the current grading system seems even worse, and when the coach feedback is "you should try a spin move" it's not a mystery as to why.

    :D

yeah, there is some quirky stuff there, for sure. BUT if I do have a real garbage game, the grades tend to ball park get it right.

but I agree - I would like to see the grading system polished up, then used in a manner that somehow discourages garbage team play.
  • My big issue with any position, and this happens in drop-in is play your bloody position. There is no excuse this year where you have to pick ahead of time to play D to never ever play D or lead the rush every time. I even somewhat understand being tempted to push up if you are playing with guys that never pass. I don't agree but I get it. But when from original puck drop you never actually play D, or are always on the wrong wing or if the center literally stays at center?? That is where I lose my mind.

I can handle newbs who are trying to learn. I can handle guys that make mistakes more often than not (we all make mistakes). I can even handle a bad D-man that gets beaten 1 on 1 often or misses their assignments. What I can't stand are people that don't try to at least play their position.
