hockey is a game of hand eye elitists and powerful skaters doing science with momentum.
_____________________________

1. the skating isnt "shifty" enough.

its very linear..

you skate with the puck infront of you with the option to make ONE dramatic move to the left or right;

just adding a simple shoulder dip or something subtle to make defenders commit and make things more interesting on both ends of the puck
_____________________________

2. the stick handling is much more complex.

at most, the right stick is just a turning modifier. and the ability to precisely control the puck around your body while skating just isnt there.

where you decide put the puck in your stance while skating makes a serious impact on predicting your trajectory as a defender, and disguising your intentions with the puck.

the option of only a super empahasized left or right (while also ceasing your ability to skate) creates a seriously lackluster experience, both offensively and defensively.

there needs to be more control of puck positioning while still skating

one example i can think of that happens all the time: ill have the puck held to my left on my backhand. defender blocks right. i want to go left past him, but i cant. because i cant continue to skate while holding the puck slighty to my left to avoid poke. i let go of right stick to skate left. and the animation forced on you pulls the puck onto the forehand and its in inevitable range of the poke, even though youve known about the situation beforehand. so it forces you way wide, even though you should have cooked him.
_____________________________

4. defense

news flash: you get harrassed in hockey. the penaltys should be embelishment at this point.

the only trip occurences will be on purpose, or in a "bike spoke" fashion. a well trained skater wont be effected by a 400 gram composite stick tapping off there skates, or simply stepping over it determined to make a play.

poke checking does not hinder skating speed

and no player above the age of ten is uncoordinated enough to attempt a stick lift and accidently smack you in the face
_____________________________

4) why isnt passing pressure sensative? tight window oppurtunities are now offlimits, because you have to "charge" your pass strength. rather than compress the trigger to the deepest point.

possibly change saucer to RT and basic pass to RB?
_____________________________

i could make a list for days about things that bother me.

opportunity is nerfed to make the game more even, rather than rewarding good exciting hockey.

i.e.
lackluster offense kit
+ any defense is a minor
= boring time

loose puck pickups are too slow, render you defensless for way too long, and its just unbalanced.

protect puck feature literally useless. easily bodied up, let alone actually use it on the correct side.

  • No lies detected, sir. I especially like the stick lift comment about smacking people in the face. As a hockey player, if I'm stick lifting, I barely even go above the knees. Even if I miss. Lol. I love everything about this post.

I would agree with the stick lift as I'm the same, but keep in mind we aren't playing NHL caliber players who are the strongest on their sticks. Sometimes that type of momentum is needed to lift a stick of a guy who weighs 220 pounds of pure muscle. It's sad but you see it all of the time, missed stick lifts hitting visors and helmets.

you dont keep your weight loaded on the stick when handling the puck. thats why they say "wow hes got soft hands" its a delicate finessey procedure.

high sticks mostly occer when players try to bat the puck out of the air. and thats why its not allowed in the first place higher than the crossbar.

or a wind up for a slapshot or follow through

No, but in corners and in front of the net you sure do, which is where most high sticks occur on the ice.
  • The stick lift penalties might not act or look realistic, but what else do you propose instead to reduce stick lift spamming?
  • Pretty sure passing is touch sensitive, as when I accidentally keep my trigger lock on, my passes are super weak ...

Obviously saucer pass you have to hold and charge.

This is an EA induced issue. By going from 0 to 100 on the poke penalties, and 100 to 0 on the stick lift penalties, instead of a slow, gradual change for both from NHL 18, they force fed people to adjust rapidly. This tripled penalties per game. Last night, AIs accounted for five penalties in a game I played.

They could have added a cool down for the lift. Maybe wait a second or two. They could have tuned down how successful stick lifts are. And lastly, they could have just made stick lifts less rewarding by making successful lifts that resulted in straight steals a lower percentage. In real hockey, the majority of stick lift steals come from slow moving players along the boards. It's very rare to stick lift a player at full speed mid ice and just take the puck away clean. However, NHL 19 allows this and that's why people use it so much.

    Hmm.

I see your point, but cool downs are not gonna fly with me. If I want to run around like Paul Bunyan, it is my right to have that control. However, I should be in the box for doing so, which it is. Now, am I saying the balance is good, or implemented properly? No, I am not. It definitely could be tuned better. Like if a lift is reasonably close enough, but fails, shouldn't be an instant penalty. But again, by doing this, players can spam it till it connects, or causes a penalty.

i think that a poke check should just bounce off the leg/hip of a skater if its not a good poke, causing 0 hinderance to the puck carrier 88% of the time.. rather than being a trip 95% of the time.

it already forces you into a quartersecond glide when using it, that you get beat even trying one in the first place.

also, passing is not pressure sensative. it is charged based. go to practice and squeeze the trigger all the way down and let go quickly. its soft. hold it half way for a few seconds, its hard.

more descriptive arguments and examples in more organized fashion

    any input from devs?
  • I think that charging the pass is fine, it takes 1 sec max to have full speed and in real life when you’re under pressure you cannot pass with full velocity and precision. Do you want it automatic ( control by the game) ? I don’t think so!
And we have to remember that it’s a video game, not real life.

High sticking actually occurs in the slot and in the corners along the boards.
  • Passing not being pressure sensitive drives me crazy.

RS stick handling was much more 1-to-1 to the right stick on last generation. Now its like fifa with a specific RS motion being tied to a specific animation. Addition of 1 touch dekes, removal of quick cuts. Skating with the puck is a lot more boring now.

im a pretty nice person, you can prefer that its charged. thank you for your input. the game is made for everyone not just me.

from my experience with the game, if theres an opening, i dont calll for energy from my muscles and wait till there ready to work, i just send it. so when you say otherwise, its humorous to me, and i question your authenticity.

    thats true bud.
  • Gold stars all around here.
    Regarding sticks and penalties..
First: hockey’s a contact sport meaning even if I’m just wearing gloves and a helmet while out playing shiny I can expect some contact..I mean. That’s why it’s called shiny..in this game the poke/lift calls need to drop down to 20% of what’s being called now. The times im tripped, or trip someone with a poke, are infinitesimal compared to the amount of times I attempt the play..and im old and slow :p
As far as stick lifts..same deal...to that end..it’s hard to recall a time where I accidentally high sticker someone while doing that maneuver. It’s not like your trying to pitch hay when doing a stick lift. The bottom hand should be fairly steady and the top pushes down(like a lever) quickly..cause the point of a lift is getting the puck..meaning your blade must return to the ice quickly to get that puck..not swinging the stick like a dang katana, nor locking up with the player like flipping ice dancing.

Ps: why can’t I use the right stick to help gather the puck when it’s loose or mucking around in the corners?
