I do see the original posters point. yes I can mostly guarantee that this next 30 minutes I won't have to pee or work or shovel. But when you decide to sit down for a night of chel odds are in 6 hours there may be a time where you need to do something unexpected (wife, roomie, doorbell, child, dog eating something...etc). I don't see how an AI can't take over for a time limit. If a true emergency comes up then it is likely turn system off and deal with it so a timed AI would work.

I think the big problem is that AI this year seems (for most people that I have read about and talked to) overpowered so this system could be exploited. Having said that. In the current system if I am AFK for too long I get booted and the other team is stuck vs an AI the whole game. Which would you prefer? AI for a minute or two or the rest of the game?? They just need a system so guys don't just do it all the time. And not a whole team at once. I can see that happening 1 goal up 2 minutes left. Let the AI bring it home.

For me personally the odd time I my daughter is sleeping and has a bad dream or cries and needs dad or mom (if mom is home) for a few minutes. Most times it takes a couple of minutes to settler her and she back to sleepie-land. And if for some reason it takes too long then yes I should just be booted. Should I never play chel until she is moved out??

How many other on-line games have a feature where you can just take a break and let the computer play for you?

Life comes up every now and then, which is fine. When life comes up so often that you need to come here and ask for an "auto-pilot" function, then maybe life is a bit more important and time consuming to commit to gaming at that point in time.

You said yourself that the odd time your daughter wakes up... Does not sound problematic and all and is perfectly understandable. Why then go to the extreme and say you all of a sudden can't play until she moves out??? You play online, you commit to that game as much as you can. Not any different than initiating a conversation with someone. It is your responsibility to give that person your undivided attention as you are the one that initiated the conversation. If you know you can hardly ever finish a conversation, then don't start one....

Pretty sure most conversations I have been part of allowed me to tell them to hang on a second if something came up. Can't remember many where I was forced/stuck no matter what. I never said it was a common occurrence and if it was then I would not commit to games or I would play offline. But the odd time when it does and I can't deal with it between games or in a pause (if someone hasn't rage paused after a goal already) then I can't see why playing an AI for 1 minute or 2 is the end of the world. Its not ideal but I fail to see why its a big deal. As I said, if I have to leave the game then you are playing AI the rest of the game. I think 1 minute is better? Like it or not this happens and will continue to happen whether the system changes or not.

As for other online games? I don't play many but COD and/or battlefield don't have an auto-pilot but I am able to hide somewhere for a minute and generally can come back. Also the timeout period before being kicked is much higher. Hockey I can't just hide behind the net and its like a 30 second boot.

Finally just to clarify I am not saying life comes up and interrupts gaming on a daily basis but it does happen. And I have seen it happen to just more than me. I understand the arguments against AI jumping in for a minute or so but I also fail to see the big deal if a proper system (TBD) is added. Having said this I would not be upset if nothing was done at all. I would fear it would be overused all the time and add to trolls. I just understand where the original poster is coming from and felt like saying something since he was getting slammed. Congrats to everyone that is able to quarantine themselves during game time but that is not everyone. Gaming is and should be a getaway for everyone that wants to play. There has to be a middle ground somewhere someone just needs to find it.

QUICK EDIT: Sorry I forgot to answer on the extreme not playing until daughter moves out thing. You are right. It is not a common occurrence and I did go to the extreme. Apologies. When I play with buddies in other games (COD mostly) if I have to leave we are all back in a game within 10 minutes. NHL takes ages fighting failing lobbies, DRE's and games takes on average 25 minutes. It sucks having to leave a game, let the team down, wait for them and then start the lobby fight over. I have not played NHL due to this on nights where I can't commit or don't have too long to play. Again as someone else mentioned, it is not the worlds problem that I had to leave them game but I say again that I wouldn't mind playing an AI player for a couple of minutes if someone else had to go.

I totally understand. As I said, every now and then life creeps up. It is unavoidable and not the end of the world when it happens now and again.

Some people have a baby that is very fussy or difficult. It cries every 20 minutes. Ok, then should you be playing a game that will most likely affect 11 other people? Probably not, but then again people have a right to play when they want. All I am saying is, there should be some respect involved when you're gaming will affect 11 other people.

So far we have to deal with bad server connections, DRE's, trolls, quitters, pauses, players that refuse to play their positions as they should (d-men forwards for one) and once in awhile those that are downright annoying and disrespectful with their mics.

Life comes up for me as well. Every now and then I get disrupted and I hate when it happens because I find it disrespectful to my teammates and opponents. But when I do decide to play, it is because more than likely my life won't interfere during the time I choose to play. I try to plan things to have less chances of being disrupted.
If someone gets disrupted so much that they feel an auto-pilot is necessary, then maybe they should be playing offline where pauses are not a problem.

Adding in this function or not causes problems either way anyways. So regardless of what gets done, I will deal with it.

Agreed. I don't see a perfect solution. There rarely ever is one. I can see the OP's side of things and I can see the people against it reasons as well. I just wanted to pipe in to hope to show its not black and white. Arguments started to sound like "hey if you can't make sure not to be interrupted then don't play" which I disagree with. If interruptions are the exception rather than the norm than I get it. There are indeed 2 sides to this coin. I am used to playing AI this gen and hate it so I would rather them jump in for a minute or so to cover someone AFK than have them there the rest of the game. Ask me this question in the glory days of EASHL where most games were at least 5v5 and my answer would likely be different.

Personally I do my best to not make affect 11 other people when gaming (let's be honest maybe if lucky 11 others to start, and 4 once the first goal gets scored in drop-in at-least ;) ). If there was a system that would have measures to avoid abuse then I would be all for it. But I highly doubt that exists.

    Fair enough. Agreed.

Yes. But that works out great because I hear NHL 34 will be rocking.

I wanted to make a request for NHL20. My buddies and I always play together on an EASHL club team and we always run into an issue if one of us has to answer the phone, go to the bathroom, etc. cause they’ll have to leave their controller mid-game. Is there any chance you could include a feature that allows a person to make their player a computer until they get back that way there isn’t just a player on the ice not moving? Thanks

    Yea no thanks.

If you wanna game, then press pause on your life. The game and other users don't revolve around your life and schedule.

I wish there were at least two pauses per team per game. One for an emergency and one to call a timeout.

Or one pause per team per game and let us call timeouts during a stoppage without pausing the game.

There were 3 not too long ago. Per team. Which made some seriously long games. The one time out now is sufficient.

One pause is sufficient, but it’s annoying that it’s tied to your only opportunity to call timeout. Especially annoying if you’re playing drop-in and you get the one guy who of course has to pause and quit after the first goal 2 minutes into a game.

Pauses are a cancer in online games and shouldn't exist.

If there really is an emergency, 30 seconds ain't much to deal with it, so might as well just quit the game and take care of it.

Some emergencies are like running to open the door for someone. I’m not talking drive across town to pick somebody up.

We have one puause to call a timeout and or to swap goalies. I wouldn’t mind two 15 second pauses for Club games or HUT games. In no way on Earth should there be more than 1 in Drop ins.

Also. I’m aware there was three 45 second pauses before. Every drop in consisted of both teams using all three pauses before the first puck drop. Certainly didn’t miss those at all.

I wish there was an option to call a timeout during a stoppage in play without using a pause. 2K has a dedicated timeout button so you don’t need to pause the game. I would be glad if we had a dedicated button and one pause. I would rather have it like this instead of two pauses.
  • TLDR. 1) Allow for personal Time outs. I need to answer the door and I do not want to hold the team up or we may not have a TO left. I call a Personal TO, I get subbed off by a bot from the bench. When I am ready to go back in, I push a button. 2) Don't have screens when you are waiting for others and you have nothing to do... for the love of ... If I ready'd up, should I be punished waiting for others and all I can do is Mute someone without a mic. Let me look at STATS ... something 3) STATS .. do not have useless STATS on 3's . There are no penalty minutes .. why should I constantly look at Zeros .. put STATS there that are useful. maybe change them up. Blocked shots. How many times the bot cost us the game.. something useful. 4) Three stars. I don't want to watch all the replays to find out. Keep the replays, but list the 3 stars immediately to the right or something. Allow a right bumper to move between the Replays and the Stars..
