PS4 controller, left stick problem

Today I purchased a new PS4 controller. I’ve been playing with a bad controller, where the left stick keeps freezing the player holding the puck. So why after about 2 minutes of playing does the new controller begin to have the same issue? Anyone else having this problem, or anyone have a suggestion?

Replies

  • Nope. Call Sony.
  • Hey @rgollin60

Can you please take a video of the issue occurring and post it in this thread?
  • I have had the same issue I bought a new controller it went away for a bit but came back it’s like the l2 button gets held if you jiggle the l stick they will skate right again.

I have to rely on someone else to record and post this issue. I don't have the know-how, too old. Never encountered this problem with NHL15/16/17. Going to pick up my old NHL 17 from the place I donated it tomorrow and try it.

Here is a tutorial for capturing video on PS4:

Alternatively, you could just have a friend or family member record your TV with their phone when the issue happens.

I've occasionally picked up loose pucks and had my player stuck in a holding the stick out animation, it clears up in 2-3 seconds, I just figured it was an odd EA glitch. I've also noticed it happen to my opponent a few times as well.
  • So I installed NHL 17 today and unfortunately the left stick on my controller froze the skater as is does in NHL 19.
Now I own 3 PS4 controllers that I can not use to play EA NHL hockey. I’ll have to find another game that isn’t hard on the controller.

Ok, so it's a controller problem then. Thanks for confirming.

If the controller you just bought has an issue exchange it, try another. If you have access to an eb games they offer insurance on controllers for $7.50. Anything goes wrong within 1 year from date of purchase they will replace it. Then you just buy the insurance again, rinse and repeat. I usually wear a controller out every 4-6 months playing Chel so its saved me quite a bit of money over the years.

Just traded mine in yesterday, RT was sticking, 6 weeks ago I had traded it in cause left stick wasn’t working. The amount of controllers I have gone through this is the best cheapest way to always have a good controller.

If you go to practice mode, you can see movements of your both joysticks there.

And I guess there are also apps for testing the controller in ps store. And for Xbox too in ms store.

  • Thanks guys, I did purchase the controller at EB Games and yes I added the insurance. Just feel bad that I have to replace it after 1 day's use.
  • Also happening on Xbox player freezes for a couple of seconds before you can skate again ..and yes I've tried different controller's it's the only game this happens to

By "only game this happens to" I trust you mean NHL hockey, because I have the same issue with NHL 17 and NHL 19. Otherwise, I agree. Have no controller issue with any other game.

I recalled my earlier posts from another thread regarding same(?) issue:

It could be a controller issue after all.

If your right joystick is drifting even a little bit to left or right, it will cause that player can't skate. Game doesn't allow your player to skate when he is handling the stick/puck.

And when you either pass or shoot the puck, the drifting might be reset. Or you just don't notice it before your skater receives the puck again. When you are not having the puck, you don't notice the drifting.

Sorry if my English is too hard to understand.

Sooo....it was my controller apparently. Works fine at everything else I play. But I switched to a different one and it went away. Weird. Thanks.
    Nice to hear.

Nhl is very sensitive in this case, just a little dfirting is enough. It is easy to see if your controller is OK or not if you go to free skating, there you can see visualization of joystick movement. If you let both sticks to center and white dot is not centered or twitches (especially right one) there will be problems.

On Xbox you can also download a free app called Game controller tester that allows you to test everything in your controller. Don't know if PS4 store has something similar.
Could it be this? Is the left stick drifting or are you unintentionally touching it just a little bit?

Just trying to help. I had this issue with one controller and when I went to practice mode, it showed the right joystick was drifting very little.

It was not causing trouble when my player didn't have the puck or in any other situation (including menus etc), only when I had the puck my player occasionally wouldn't skate until I touched the right stick (centered it).

OMG! Thank you so much for this information.
Just played 2 games, keeping my thumb off the right stick while moving the skater with the left stick. Everything working great now.
I must of gotten into a bad habit, because this became a problem only this season. I was about to give up on this game and take up baseball.
I love you guys that take the time to help others.
