Many cool features for EASHL/OTP from PS3/360 are no longer in the new versions of NHL for some reason. They need to come back!

EASHL CUSTOM ATTRIBUTES FOR PLAYERS.

This one is simple, go back to what you had in NHL 14/15 (PS3/XB1)
Simple as that. This format was far superior to what we have now. It gives you a far more diverse ability to fully customize your players abilities. There's so many diverse players in the NHL, this format truly lets us customize our players in the same way. I don't know why we got away from this, but we seriously need to go back to this format. I can't stress this enough, it was HUGELY improve EASHL for everyone.

One note on this.. In NHL 15 you needed to build your way up to Legend 3 in order to get the full amount of currency to spend on your player, I believe it was 2500 points. We shouldn't go this route, every player should start with the full amount and not have to build up, so when we start our EASHL career we're not depleted skill-wise compared to people who have been playing longer. Keep the progression stuff for vanity items and aesthetics.

CONTROLS.

For whatever reason you decided to change the button controls in NHL 18.
I got used to using the old controller button setup since NHL 14/15 and you change some functions for no reason (I.E. the chop, hip check, goalie control).
If you won't let us map our own buttons, at least have an option to use NHL 14/15 controls.
For some reason you have an NHL 94 controller option that no one over the age of 12 uses.

MATCHMAKING.

Definitely bring back the 12 man lobby, similar to what we had in NHL 14/15.
In fact, instead of only having max 12 ppl in the middle (where 1 person can sit out to troll), have a max of 15-20 or even unlimited.
If someone wants to wait in the middle and troll, the slots will fill and the game will launch leaving the troll still sitting in the middle.

I don't know why games like to use this complex matchmaker system that rarely accomplishes its goal (balanced teams/games), especially with such a small playerbase further split with the new 3v3/ones/threes modes.

The great thing about the 12 man room is you can re-launch another game right after, no waiting, same 12 players. Another great option was being able to create your own password locked room.
A lot of the time everyone would sit in the middle, 2 guys would become captains (usually the goalies) and they would draft teams. Fun times.

I'm not saying you should get rid of the quick play matchmaker, but definitely bring back 12 man lobbies as an option.

I also don't like not being able to change my position once I'm in the lobby.
Sometimes if I queue up as goalie, there's no goalie on the other side but we have a Dman slot open, I'll jump up and play D just to salvage the game so I don't have to quit and re-queue.

MANUAL GOALIE IN EASHL.

For reference I use Skill Stick, Goalie control: alternate, Precision default: off

Trying to hug the post doesn't always work right away. In a scramble it leaves you vulnerable which isn't good. Also, once you hug the post (using RB/R1) you should be able to let go of RB/R1 to release the post (like in NHL 14/15). It's quicker for reacting to a pass out in front of the net.

Sliding post to post while crouched, it doesn't always hug the post right away, sometimes you end up out in the crease. Seems to work properly only while standing.

Side to side movement (without holding LB/L1 precision) is very jerky.
When the goalie turns sideways and kicks off suddenly is very unrealistic and not smooth at all. It puts you too far over a lot of the time. It should be smooth side to side movement more like it was in NHL14/15.

The puck arrow from NHL 15. Please bring this option back, it's a big help during the scrambles. Players have tons of helpful little hints in the On Ice Trainer settings, you need this for the goalie. Goaltending is the hardest position in the game, you should make it easier so more people want to play it. Nobody likes playing against AI goalies.
https://image.ibb.co/fUD32K/Capture.png

Once you skate out to play the puck, skating back and turning around in your crease to face the play is clunky and slow. Trying to stop a dump in, which is super easy in the regular NHL goalies do it all the time, is terribly hard still in this game. Goalies skate slow and are clumsy outside the crease. To add to this, why can't we make a save attempt while outside the crease? If you get caught out of your net or turn it over while outside the crease, you can only skate. You should be able to skate(hold X/A) AND make save attempts(let go of X/A) outside the crease.

NEW IDEAS.

-Custom camera view. Used to have it, please bring it back.
https://i.ibb.co/HHjHVDz/custom-camera.jpg

-One handed MANUAL dekes. Used to be able to do this in NHL 14/15, please bring back. In fact, stick handling should have more lateral movement, it's too tight in this game. Players feel too stiff when stickhandling, especially deking to the backhand.
https://i.ibb.co/QCVWZnG/one-hand-deke.jpg

https://i.ibb.co/c1BhtYJ/Untitled-1.jpg

-Spinorama: should be able to control which way the spin starts.

-Penalty box view change. Sometimes exiting the box you don't know where you are as the screen expands back out to your normal camera view. You should be able to keep that camera view the whole time while in the box.

-Practice mode with friends (goalie/player). Right now there is no option to practice as a manual goalie and have my friend shoot on me 1 on 1.

-Ones with friends. I should be able to load up a custom ones game with 2 other friends, both online & offline.

-Turn off taunt sounds. I guess some people might like it, but I find them annoying and wish there was an option to turn them off like the other game sounds.

-Add spectator mode for friends. Be able to spectate a game if they're mid game. I should be able to view my friends list, see a friend who is currently in a game, and select an option to either view his game, or join his game/team if there's room, replacing a CPU player.

-I'd like to see a rematch option, if you have a close fun game it'd be nice to vote to rematch after. Majority vote I guess?

BUGS/FIXES:

-Nerfed hitting. Way too nerfed. Hitting was a bit OP in NHL14/15, so a balance between NHL14/15 and NHL 19 would be great.

-Bump checks. Bumps cause WAY too many turnovers. Players lose the puck to being bumped far too much, often from players smaller than them.

-Tripping. This changed in NHL 18 when you introduced the defensive stick idea. Now when you poke check, unless you control your stick with the right analog stick, the players stick goes right for the legs. Before this change, you aimed your pokecheck simply by the direction your player was looking (left analog stick). It was much simpler and lead to way less penalties. Simple fix, let us have an NHL14/15 controller button option with no defensive skill stick.

-60 second Timer clock (next game) at the end of the game is unnecessary, get rid of it. I'll quit the game when I want I don't need a hurry up timer.

-Quitting lobby loads back to the original menu, you have to load the lobby again and invite friends every time. Annoying time waster. There's a few bugs like this where you get launched back to the beginning menu.

-Cant invite friends in practice mode to practice with. For example: Should be able to load up a free skate practice with 2 friends, one as player and one as goalie. Preferably online & offline.

-Cant test out custom world of chel players in practice mode before using them in a real game. Used to be able to.
https://i.ibb.co/LxvmQ66/test-on-ice.jpg

-Shots on goal from outside the blueline are unrealistically inaccurate. Accuracy should get progressively worse the farther away you shoot, not just outside the blueline.

-Club search match room size.. should be exact OR more, instead of just exact.

-Goalies too slow, both in skating and movement. (detailed above)

-Be able to join games in progress (as an option). Players crash and quit all the time, would be a nice option to have games fill up while playing. Also be able to invite friends to current games if there is computer players.

-Auto-pass calling for a pass from computer. Often you call for a pass only to have the computer pass it to you right before, which makes you auto pass as soon as you receive it. Should be able to cancel the auto pass.

-Drop-in Arena(s) & Teams. You should have a selection of different rinks to play in, including the outdoor rink. Not necessarily NHL arenas and teams, could be different arenas and teams from Europe or even AHL. Spice it up, the same arena and teams every game gets boring and makes EA look lazy.

-I think injuries should last longer. Sometimes they should last the whole game, depending on the hit or shot block. They used to last the whole game every time, but that caused people to quit. Minimum should be a full period (20 min), maximum entire game.

-Skate foot protectors should prevent your player from being partially paralyzed or at the very least prevent injury if blocking a shot on the skate. Otherwise what's the point of equipping them?

-Bring back skate blade curve options and stick flex/curve options from NHL15 that affects your skating/shooting. The more customizable your player is the better. Makes for a more unique experience.
https://i.ibb.co/LQp3DY6/stick-amp-skate-custom.jpg

-Request position swap while in the lobby. It used to be easy, you'd just ask someone through the mic if they wanted to change positions. But most people are in partys now and won't hear you. Maybe have an option to click their name which would trigger a popup asking for a position swap. Can only send it once to reduce spam, 10 second timer so it doesn't linger and delay the start of the game.

-Dumping the puck in after you hit the red line far too often goes over the glass at the other end. Please reduce this is make it impossible.

-If you're determined to stick with the Hockey bag idea, please allow an "open all bags" option and get rid of the "are you sure you want to open this bag?" second click.

-Skating over the opponents stick, by accident or not, checks the puck off their stick. It happens way too much, more so than any other NHL game I can remember. If you combine this with the bump checks it's like there's no puck control in this game. Can these be adjusted on the fly with the tuners? If so please do it immediately. Funny enough, this is the safest way to get the puck off the opponents stick with the way the pokecheck/tripping is setup.

-Replays post whistle. Why did these go away for drop-ins? Now it just pans away and shows a cabin or a tree with snow on it as 1 bird flies by. Show a big hit, big save, nice goal, or even a cool play like a nice passing play. Also bring back the replay packages... hit package, hattrick goal package, and Team lowlight package. Those were great.

-Players and Goalies should be able to play without a helmet/mask. I know there's a bug in drop-ins and one in club that allows players to play helmet-less. Both goalies and players should be able to show off their beautiful hair, why not it's just a video game. Goalies too, have an option for no helmet/mask, at least for drop-in.

BUG

-Missed slapshots. I don't mean one-timers. Skating with the puck and either stopping and trying to take a slapshop, or taking a slapshot while skating. You miss the puck way too much, this shouldn't happen.

NEW MENU IDEA

-In the dressingroom it would be nice to see a picture of everyone's player model as well as their on-ice name. I made a quick photoshop picture for an example
https://i.ibb.co/zSXKgWv/Untitled-1.jpg

MORE IDEAS/FIXES

-A simple vote to kick option while in-game would be nice, it's implemented in other online multiplayer games and works great.
When the vote comes up maybe it should show the players stats too, like how many times he went offside, his AFK time, team play %, etc. Should also be able to write comments when suggesting a player to kick, basically to give a few details on why you want to kick them.

-Should be able to change controls in EASHL mid game without having to take a timeout or wait until the intermission.

Too many animations causes you to lose your player until the animation finishes. I don’t remember on old gen if they were a problem, but I truly can’t stand skating up the ice to receive a pass and then my player looses his skating momentum because of an animation.

Heck, even picking up the puck I can’t pass until it’s done and I either get decked or the lane I was looking to pass to is shut. Also can’t skate up you full possession of the puck. I’ve been bumped off the puck so many times I can’t just skate and pick it up. I have to “stop” to pick it up sometimes.

Yup, my buddies and I refer to that as the EA "swoop" lol

Why do we have to slow down to pick up the puck? Watch any NHL game. You can see players using their speed to pick up the pick without losing their momentum. Why can’t we do that flawlessly?
  • Very good post OP. Matchmaking in WoC drop ins is fubar. Lobbies are a MUST for a game like this. Developers should pick up a contoller and try to play couple of 6s drop in games to test out what a soul wrecking experience it is. Drop ins should be a way to get more people to play the game, but it does exactly the opposite. With more manual matchmaking players would be more likely to team up and find friends to start EASHL clubs with.

My suggestion for the devs is that skip NHL 20 and do NHL 21 right. And please no more hockey bags that needs to be opened manually. If you will concentrate all your effort on unlockables atleast add more retro equipment.
  • Lots of good inputs. I would like to add custom music, what a great feature that was.

I loved the custom music option. I spend countless hours acquiring the proper goal songs, into music...etc. Now, I play with all music off. I disable the audio for custom goal horns, all of it. It's really gone down hill.
  • What are the chances any of the EA devs see these suggestions and take them seriously?
  • Looking back on Legend 3, it was a grind. Sure, it may have been satisfying to achieve, but I’m getting older, and so are my club mates (you are too) and having less time to play let alone grind for a particular game. I wouldn’t mind getting the same amount of XP at the beginning of the year and that’s it to further tune my player to my likes, but I think Legend 3 was a thing of the past and doesn’t fit well for the future of the game, IMO.

100% agree and I had this in the last paragraph on the custom attributes part.

  • @NHLDev tagged in case you haven't stumbled across this thread.
  • I've gone back to the 360 when I want to play EASHL, I play a little of 19 for Hut but that's it. I play Legacy on the 360 and yes the game speed is a little slower but you adapt to it pretty easily and once you get your legend 3 your player can be pretty quick especially if you set up your boost slots proper, but overall it's a much better and smoother game and you can actually pass the puck around with 5 players unlike in 19 garbage.

Yup it has a much better balance and feel to it. Less stupid penalties, more customizable options, and more puck control, much like an actual NHL game. We need to get back to that for NHL 20.

I guess technically NHL 19 is fairly balanced, but that's because everything is evenly broken :D:D:D

Way better, it's not even comparable to 19 it's 2 complete different games. One thing I noticed the other day on Legacy that was awesome was when you're skating without the puck and if you get into the lane of the other player by accident, he doesn't get stuck like he's hitting a brick wall like in 19 when moving forward, in legacy they'll bump but you're guy will roll off him and continue moving, where in 19 you can't move until you literally move your joystick to the left or right or down and then move to the side again to get off him, little things that make it just such a smoother and more enjoyable game.

Oh and the hitting after the whistle is awesome man I missed that part!
  • yep, they have definitely improved little things here or there but overall the last gen games were just a smoother/better/more fun experience.
