College Players in the ECHL

I noticed in the most recent roster update that there are a couple college players added, more specifically in the ECHL. I noticed Darian Romanko and Alex Rodriguez of the Norfolk Admirals, who were both playing in the NCAA earlier this year were added in the update. I know in the past we generally don't see college players who haven't played an NHL game added until mid-fall next year if we're lucky. I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to why these players or any other non-NHL college players were included in the update.
