I have broken 4 and quickly. Was getting pissed. With that said, they were the new controllers being sold (including the Elite) past couple years that are made in China. They are using a cheaper thumb controller on the circuit board itself. Nothing to do with the rubber thumbs. There is a tiny plastic "tab" if you will that breaks making the thumb shaft snap in/out of its square housing. I wish I could upload a picture to show the difference between the New Gen (China) boards and the First Gen (USA) boards. Completely different.
I went back and started using the worn out First Gen controllers I had from 2013. I ordered new rubber thumbs to freshen them up and haven't broken either of my old ones. To test my theory I bought (2) used ones from Gamestop and haven't broken them either but you have to look at the battery stickers before you buy.
Here is how you can tell the difference. On battery stickers "New Gen" controllers say "Made in China" in the top left. The "First Gen", better quality controllers say "Hello from Seattle" in the lower left. Good luck hunting. You won't be disappointed.
Just make sure your screwdriver set has the proper torx bit.
Swapping the thumbsticks on the Xbox1 controller is pretty easy, much easier than the PS4 controller.
It's not really the stick that's the problem but the switch attached to pcb board which gets worn out. You need to solder to really fix the problem. Controllers made today are absolute junk compared to ones from older systems.

The stick is a problem too though, at least in my experience.
Ea needs to just give us the option to customize controls and add an auxiliary button so we can further remap the controller ...
The poke and sauce pass being on the same button is so annoying, same with hits and checks, same with change player / pass , same with kneel/block and Deke ...

Yup the goalie controls are horribly setup too.
