Basically, Gretzky isn’t allowed to use his own number.
It doesn’t matter if you use the Alumni teams he’s on or even use a created team that has Gretzky. Once you start the season, #99 is locked and he gets assigned #97. All other teams retired numbers unlock if you use Alumni teams, except good ol’ #99.
The only way to get Gretzky to wear #99 is to substitute the Alumni teams with the AHL teams and play an AHL season.
So the options are:
1. Play an NHL season and just assign him #98.
Or
2. Play an AHL season using Alumni teams and keep the #99, but play for a Calder Cup instead of the Stanley Cup.
Tough choice.
Does this happen even when you turn retired numbers to "OFF"?? Do you know if this happens in Franchise mode as well as season mode?
I don’t think there’s an “on/off” option, but it might not matter anymore. I think they fixed the issue in the patch.
Ok. Thanks for the response. I was planning on doing an all alumni season mode to tide me over until the next roster/patch update so I can start my Franchise mode then. It would suck to see Gretzky in anything other than 99!
Doing an All Alumni season is a good idea, but there is a flaw in that as well.
It’s the fact that there are multiple players that have duplicate and triplicate versions of themselves on multiple teams. Heck, Mike Sillinger alone is on 10 of these teams.
So, yeah, it’ll be great to have Gretz in his #99, but by seasons end, the top 10 scorers will be...
1. Gretzky
2. Gretzky
3. Lemieux
4. Gretzky
5. Modano
6. Messier
7. Messier
8. Modano
9. Hull
10. Hull
No good.
Oh I know, that's why I'm editing the teams myself. Removing all the duplicates and going for a "classic teams" concept. For example making the 1987 Oilers, 1989 Flames, 1983 Islanders, etc. I know it wont be perfect and I'm not restricting myself to those rules (I don't mind having legends from different eras on certain teams) but I'll do my best not to have duplicate players, especially star players, I'll have them on specific teams. I'm going to create star players that were left off like Pavel Bure, Paul Kariya, Mike Bossy, Hakan Loob, Scott Stevens, Eric Lindros, etc.
I’m doing the same, but it’s a chore. Even going with 23 man rosters (no injuries), it a boat load of CAPs to make. Well over 500 players.
I’ve thought of possibly moving current players to teams they used to play for, ex. Praise to NJ, Perry & Cogliano to ANA, etc, etc, because they technically are Alumni, just not retired.
It’s something that’ll reduce the number of CAPs to be made, but not by much.
You should check out the OS forums. Check the NHL Rosters section. There’s a guy named Phil Parent doing an Alumni overhaul as well. I’ve been going off his list, changing a few things here and there and adding players he left off. He tends to lean towards players from the 70’s and 80’s, while I’m partial to players from the 90’s and 00’s.
If you want to discuss any player placement, post it here. I’ll be more than happy to have a debate on who should go where.

Funny you mention this! I've been going off his list as well as more of a guide to the players he added, but swapped players around (for example having Gilmour on the Flames because I want to replicate the 1989 Stanley Cup winning Flames as much as I can) and when looking at the added D-men alone I was like "holy crap"!! So I've been doing what you suggested above and adding the guys that aren't retired but basically at the end of their tenures like Perry, Hamhuis, Cogliano, etc. Like you said it does help a bit. I'm also thinking of leaving SOME duplicates who are rated low on teams so those teams have the extra man power but will effectively be extra players not in the line up because of their low rating unless of mass injury, which right now I'm planning on having injuries but setting it lower to what I normally have it at. BTW, I too am also struggling on whether to put LaFontaine on the Sabres or Isles LOL!
As is the case with like 95% of the players I’m adding, I’m going with Games Played as the first deciding factor.
Only really deviating from that rule when there’s a player I really want on a specific team. Ex. I mentioned Malhakov and Kasparitis on the OS thread. Yeah, there might be other Dmen to have more GP’s than them, but I want those specific guys.

VERY good point! Totally agree with you with there. I'm basically going the same way you are there. Also, for teams like Ottawa's alumni they are so decimated with the lack of top alumni (Alfredsson left off etc..) that I'm going to reach to supplement them with players. I'm adding Phaneuf to the Ottawa alum team since he did play for the team for a while and he's currently not playing anywhere right now anyway and it's a simple move from free agents to that team. Otherwise I basically have to create 75% of that team LOL!
Also, if you’re looking for other players to add that are over in Europe, I have a list of where to find them.
Guys like Erat, Goc, Jurcina etc, etc.
Hey Jagr is still playing, and EA has him on the Pittsburgh Alumni team. Why not add these guys to their old NHL teams as well. You’ll have to bump up their attributes tho. They’re all old and their overalls are on the 60’s.

That would be great if you're able to do that! I've been attempting to add guys from European teams (like Erat to Nashville for example) but I can't find them all. Like Mezaros to Ottawa, I couldn't find him anywhere on the European teams to transfer to Ottawa. Just like you said I've been bumping up their ratings to resemble these players in their primes (Like Phaneuf, Erat, etc.)
Remember, not all of these players are retired, but each one is either on Long Term Injured Reserve, not signed to an NHL contract, has signed an AHL contract or is overseas. All skaters have a minimum of 200 GP. Goalies have a minimum of 150 GP (with a few exceptions). The first team listed is the most GP’s. Any other teams listed go by most to least GP’s.
Like I said before, if Jagr is currently playing in Czech Rep, and EA put him on the Alumni team, then why not add these guys. Hey, the less CAPs we have to make, the better.

This is AWESOME! Thanks so much for posting it, it was a big help! To be honest, had I known how much of an undertaking this was I probably wouldn't have done it but since I was half way through I figured why half-bake it now lol?? I'm actually thinking of doing a Franchise now instead of a season mode. If I'm going to do all this work maybe a can get a couple of seasons out of this instead of one.
So, I’m at the point now where I’m not sure if I want to make well over 500 CAPs, or if I want to make “best of” teams using current NHL players who are still on specific teams and moving guys back to their original teams.
Example:
Anaheim. If I go the route of making CAPs, it’ll take 14 skaters and 1 goalie to fill out the roster. But, if I add any current Ducks who have played over 300 games with the franchise, ie, Getzlaf, Silfverberg, Fowler, etc, etc, and I move Perry, Cogliano and Beleskey and any players from my “list” back to the team, then I’ll only need to make a few CAPs. Most likely just the stand out players like Kariya, Tverdovsky and Beauchemin.
Doing it this way averages out to like 5 or 6 CAPs per team. And in some cases, teams that are heavy in actual Alumni, like the Rangers, Canadiens and Red Wings, I’ll only need 1 or 2 CAPs or none at all.
Though decision, but in the end, it all comes down to how much work do I really want to do. And I’ll admit, I’m pretty lazy.
I too am creating a historical roster for each franchise.
In my case I'm putting/creating the best players that played for a franchise on each team with the caveat that each player is no longer playing and with no duplicate players on any of the teams. It does require me to make 100s of CAPs but as I go through the process I play a few games with each team against a rival of theirs and I am finding it is a lot of fun and worth the effort. When I get each team finished I'll create a season and play it out. I'll also create a playoff or two and play that out as well.
It's a blast to play with guys like Esposito, Hodge, Bucyk, Cashman, Sanderson, Orr, Borque, Cheevers, etc vs Beliveau, Lafleur, Lemaire, Richard, Robinson, Trembley, Savard, Harvey, Dryden, etc.
In addition to the Quebec Nordiques, Hartford Whalers, and Minnesota North Stars I also created the California Golden Seals.

I'm with you here 100%. To avoid using current players, I'll leave the lowest rated players as duplicates on most teams, knowing that they'll only get into the line up if there are injuries and because of the low rating will most likely not post up huge numbers. That saves me 2 CAPS per team. Then as you said teams like Detroit and the Rangers are basically set, especially on forward (Detroit actually has TOO many forwards, problem there is almost all of them are Red Wings lifers so I can't exactly put them on other teams). The teams that become problematic are Dallas and Minnesota (North Stars), both are weak on players and more are known for their time with the North Stars than the Stars. Also helping out is that I'm not using Columbus at all or the Minnesota Wild, I'm substituting The North Stars for the Wild and Hartford for Columbus. Still very taxing but trying to find every way possible to cheat and reduce the amount of CAP's.

Love your idea and that was my original plan also and to an extent I'm still staying true to it. For example I've basically recreated the 1989 Flames, the 1987 Oilers, 1983 Islanders but for teams like the Canadiens and Red Wings they have SO many amazing legends that I'm totally fine with having players from different eras on one team.

I would hope that you’ll be making my beloved 1994 Rangers. I was 20 years old when they won the cup that year, and I still remember every playoff game like they were yesterday. From Matteau! Matteau! Matteau! in double OT, to one of the greatest moments in sports with Messier’s guarantee, which he backed up with a hat trick no less, to Richter stoning Bure on a penalty shot in the finals.

Pure gold!
How can I forget it??? As a die hard Flames fan I was probably cheering as hard for the Rangers as you were to beat Vancouver LOL!! LEGENDARY Stanley Cup victory for the Rangers that year, well deserved! Messier solidifies his spot as the greatest leader in not only hockey, but in SPORTS in my opinion. I am moving in that direction BUT the only thing that might wreck it is that I'm going back and forth on whether or not to keep Messier on the Oilers since as a Flames fan growing up that rivalry with the Oilers was UNREAL! LOTS of memories from the 80's, unfortunately for me most of them not so good being that the Oilers were so dominant LOL!

Yeah, I’m gonna be a homer here and say that you should put Mess on the Rangers. Believe me, I had seriously considered leaving him on the Oilers. The man won 5 Stanley Cups there! FIVE!
But the 1 he won in NY was the most crucial. He’s even said that that cup was the most rewarding of them all. He was brought here to win a cup, guaranteed and secured a victory when our backs were to the wall, and delivered the franchises first cup in 54 years!
Besides, with Gretzky, Kurri, Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Shayne Corson, Esa Tikkanen, Mike Krushelnyski and Fuhr, the Oilers are pretty stacked without him.
Just for fun, and because I wanted to use the Alumni players in a season now, I made 2 national teams, Canada and USA.
As far as the players go, I went with 28 man rosters. 17F, 8D, 3G. I tried to limit players with duplicate numbers as best I could, but some guys I just couldn’t leave off. Also, these teams consist of players who mainly played in the 90’s and 00’s, and none of them are older than 60 (I’m tinkering with an old timers team right now though). And as far as other national teams go, Sweden is super close to being a full squad. I think they’re short 1 defenseman.
By all means, substitute any players you feel are more deserving, or just guys you remember watching growing up. Bare in mind though, there’s not many guys you can sub on USA. There’s really only like 40 American Alumni players. Canada is a different story. So many players to choose from.
Enjoy.

Again, GREAT list! Thanks for posting their jersey numbers too! That's another pain I didn't realize when creating all these CAPS, you have to go back in adjust certain numbers because the AI gives people with duplicate numbers ridiculous secondary numbers lol! Why did I ever get myself into this lol! Too late now, in too deep! At least it will hold me over until the November roster update, HALF the AHL guys and prospects got removed with the latest roster update.
Well, after weeks of self deliberation, I’ve nailed down my Alumni rosters. I went with 25 man rosters consisting of 14F, 8D and 3G.
One major factor is that I tried to use as many CAPs with available names in the play by play list. It definitely limited my selections though. There’s lots of players that I really wanted to add, but I figured it was a decent trade off so long as the announcer said their names. I did however sprinkle in a few guys that don’t have a play by play name on the list. Some guys I just couldn’t leave off.
Case in point, there’s no way in hell I was making a Ducks alumni team without Paul Kariya. Thank god I was able to assign him “Paul” as a play by play name and not something nowhere near close to “Kariya”.
Again, being fond of players from the early 90’s thru the late 00’s, they tend to dominate these teams. And I have to give full props to Phil Parent from the OS forums as I used his Alumni team project as a template. I changed quite a few things from his list, but if he didn’t post it, I don’t think I’d ever have started mine. So thanks Phil. Much appreciated.
All that’s left now is making upwards of 400 CAPs. Wish me luck.
If anyone would like to see some of the teams, I’ll post them here.
I finished my All Time Greats alumni roster with the top 25-30 players to ever play for each team (no one player is on multiple teams). I estimate I created well over 400 players to finish this roster.
I'm now starting an All Time Teams roster with the greatest (or sometime coolest according to me) roster for each team. Here the list of the teams I'm making...
68-69 California Golden Seals 70-71 Chicago Black Hawks 71-72 Boston Bruins 73-74 Philadelphia Flyers 74-75 Buffalo Sabres 76-77 Montreal Canadiens 81-82 New York Islanders 82-83 Minnesota North Stars 84-85 Edmonton Oilers 84-85 Winnipeg Jets 86-87 Hartford Whalers 88-89 Calgary Flames 90-91 St Louis Blues 92-93 Los Angeles Kings 92-93 Pittsburgh Penguins 92-93 Quebec Nordiques 93-94 New York Rangers 95-96 Detroit Red Wings 95-96 Florida Panthers 98-99 Dallas Stars 00-01 Colorado Avalanche 02-03 New Jersey Devils 03-04 Tampa Bay Lightning 03-04 Toronto Maple Leafs 05-06 Carolina Hurricane 06-07 Anaheim Ducks 06-07 Ottawa Senators 09-10 Arizona Coyotes 10-11 Vancouver Canucks 16-17 Columbus Blue Jackets 16-17 Minnesota Wild 17-18 Nashville Predators 17-18 Vegas Golden Knights
16-17 Columbus Blue Jackets
16-17 Minnesota Wild
17-18 Nashville Predators
17-18 Vegas Golden Knights
Good luck. At least the teams I quoted will take only a few minutes to make, as pretty much everyone on them is still playing professional hockey. Hardly any CAPs at all.

I’m going with the Islanders.
530 GP with NYI
238 GP with BUF
Like I said before, if Jagr is currently playing in Czech Rep, and EA put him on the Alumni team, then why not add these guys. Hey, the less CAPs we have to make, the better.

Example:
You know what you gotta do.
😄
Enjoy.
