Franchise mode issue
So I took a full team of 60-70 overall players all 20 years of age or lower but with lower potentials of ahl top 6 to top 9 forward with the Hope's that the new coach system could increase their potentials and overall over the course of a few seasons.
I manually played 3 seasons where my best player being a 66 overall in season 1 with a potential of ahl top 6 forward, finished the first season in the nhl with 118 points, hart trophy, Calder trophy, a Stanley cup, and the Conn smythe trophy. His potential never changed, and he went from a 66 overall to a 69 after that season
2nd season pretty much the same but this time 124 points. Still stayed at ahl top 6 potential and went from a 69 to a 70 overall
3rd season, 127 points, same potential and his overall didnt move from a 70 overall.
How in the hell can a player win the majority of the personal trophies, 3 Stanley cups, 369 points in 244 GP. Yet not even be considered a decent AHL player overall wise by that point.
It just shows that theres no rhyme or reason to anything that happens in franchise mode. As a matter of fact the highest growth I saw on my team was a 3rd liner with the same potential who put up 1/3 of the points of my top guy and he grew from a 64 to a 72 over those seasons.
How can the potential label that EA gives a 17/18 year old player be the end all be all and nothing they do as far as production over the next 20 years of their career in the game change the potential that was given to them as a kid.
This was also with a full coaching staff with teaching rating being at least an A-
Yet you watch, this year in the real NHL there will be at least 1 breakout player who EA currently has ranked super low in NHL 20, yet if they were to have a point per game season, come NHL 21 EA will have adjusted that rating accordingly and probably be ranked 86+.
So how after 3 seasons in this game of my player having production like that, how is it possible they arent even ranked high enough to hold a spot on the top line of an AHL team let alone even crack the NHL roster while proving to be the best player in the NHL 3 seasons in a row

Yeah and this years rookies are pretty bad. Last year a guy like Dalhen was never getting better than a low 70 rating until half way through the season when they finally fixed their potential. You will see a lot of first rounders that never even pan out in the game. You have to either wait a few months for them to update the rosters or get through the first couple years until you can really start drafting the computer generated players
The way the game is now the potential the player has at the draft shapes their entire career of what they are going to amount to before ever even playing a game.
Like if a player scores a 40-50 goal season I dont care what EA deemed their potential as. They should see a significant overall increase
So basically I need to make up a story line as to why my player with 120+ pts, 3 seasons in a row is still only a 70 overall. Such as he has a big ego, or he likes to party, rather than just look at it as poor programming from EA
On the other hand, I find the potential system to be a bit wonky from time to time. As we all know though, a lot of high pedigree draft picks do not pan out and some low draft picks turn into hall of famers.

Imo it is one area I think ea is doing good in and I hope they build on. In the NHL how many #1 picks turn out to be just that? Actually not that many sure they mostly become at least solid nhlers but not allstars. Look at dats and zetts, king hank lots of all star late rounders. In reality a lot team’s top players come from picks like 18-40 which mostly in ea at best are top 6.
Oh ya def not saying that ea’s gm mode isn’t a shell of a thing and has made very little improvements over the years. RIP gm connected, no storylines, seems pretty easy to program in all time stats for a team and say honouring new players that surpass those, etc so many easy things imo. Maybe build a rival system, like if you face a team in the playoffs (elevated per round) multiple years in a row the ai gets more aggressive during games.
But at least imo keeping growth *random is a good thing. I always felt that top players can plateau faster because they don’t push themselves as they already rock it. While late rounders got something to prove and end up doing so. Or like Jamie Benn, pretty sure he also loved baseball never took hockey full serious until he got drafted and became one of the best lw in the nhl
