They end their monopoly on NHL rights soon too https://www.yahoo.com/news/eas-15-long-exclusivity-deal-120000377.html

  • EA has no exclusive rights to NHL games. 2K or anyone else could have made an NHL hockey game any time they wanted in the last 12 years. They chose not to.
  • If it’s true, I am excited to get more information soon :-)

I don't have the facebook but don't get too excited because there are a bunch of restrictions that have not been detailed last I heard.

Yes about the NFL deal but about in talks to NHL too.

The text ..... NFL signs deal with 2K sports, NHL is also in talks of switching over from EA to 2K.

Maybe 2K wants the exclusive rights now. I guess they know that many customers not satisfied with EA NHL, maybe the NHL knows about this too. The game now is no good advertisement for the NHL.

There should be healthy competition with EA and 2K making games. A monopoly either way isn't really good for gamers.

    That's what we have now

Possibly, but the NHL market is marginally smaller than the other professional sports leagues so I don't think they would sign an exclusivity with a single developer regardless of who it would be.

2K's version of NFL will be more of a fantasy league with the NFL branding. EA's version will be more life-like and I guess we could say more "sim".

From where do you know ? You have read it somewhere ? I do not know exactly, but 2K gave no information about how the NFL game should look like till now. By the way. NBA 2K is the reference in Basketball, it doesn’t wonder me that EA canceled NBA Live for this Season.

Taken from the article that is higher up in this thread:

However, 2K Games’ new deal with the NFL doesn’t mean that it will be able to once again produce a competitor to Madden NFL. The announcement from the NFL and 2K Games makes it clear that the company will produce “non-simulation football game experiences.” Fans hoping for a revival of the NFL 2K series to go along with the popular NBA 2K and WWE 2K franchises will surely be disappointed by that.

In a 2018 interview with GQ, actor and video game fan John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman, Ballers) pleaded his case for 2K Games to produce an NFL game again.

“But I really wish the NFL—and please put this on record—will let 2K make a football game again, ’cause ESPN NFL 2K5 was one of the best football games of all time. If I could have any influence in the culture, at all—activism [is great]—but, really, if I can get the NFL to let 2K make a video game, I can die on this earth knowing that I gave back to humanity.”

Should Washington get the credit for this? That would be a good tie-in with his upcoming movie Tenet and a good launch point for the new games if any titles were ready to be revealed by then. But he’s not getting a game to rival Madden, unfortunately.

With “non-simulation” games, we might be looking at a game like NBA Jam. Yes, it’s a basketball game. It takes place on a basketball court and real NBA players are a part of it. But it’s not a realistic simulation of an actual NBA game — with players doing multiple somersaults in the air or shooting fireballs — or anything close to what a real NBA game would be like.

Meh, if it attracts a portion of the users over from EA that just want to score, maybe it could be a good thing and eventually make EA more sim hockey than the weird hybrid we now have.

Meh, don't think so. Lesser sales means lesser profit. Lesser profit maybe that they will reduce time to work for the game. So maybe it will be more or lesser the same game which we have since years. Both variants speculative now. To find a good balanced gameplay and to score is not the problem of this game. Unfortunately only in offline mode.

Yeah, I don't think this'll work out to 2K's advantage. If anything I see this as potential pitfall unless they can somehow get something like the NFL Blitz license (which IIRC currently resides with Netherealm Games). Or maybe a 2K/Netherrealms partnership?

Might put dent into EA's market dominance and then who knows? Maybe the NFL deal changes again and 2K can actually make a Madden competitor.

In any case, this doesn't really mean anything for 2K Hockey fans. Not in the near future at least.

    *sigh*

I'd argue we have more of a hybrid.

Which is still preferable to a full on arcade game.

That game wasn't up my alley. Hit The Ice was ok far as I'm concerned for full-on arcade, but I tire of that style relatively quickly.

In case no one has noticed here, I prefer a more realistic and true-to-life product as possible

Hmm, the solution I see for 2K is to yes, acquire the NHL license and go for maybe a more arcade experience like maybe NBA Jam or something along those lines. However, IMO, the key would be to their online portion, or, more specifically, their version of EASHL. They could have their own 2KSHL with fantasy players and team names and make it as realistic or as arcade as they wish. Would be a great way to circumvent a clause that stipulates they are not allowed to make a "realistic" version of hockey if ever that would be a scenario.

If you have a fake league and players, it can still be as realistic as you want without stepping on the NHL's toes.
  • Me too, but not only the gameplay. The product as a whole

2K already has the NHL license. They've had it for years. They just decided to pull out of the Console/Sim market for this sport because they just couldn't compete with EA's marketing dominance.

The NHL doesn't put any restrictions on 2K so if they really wanted to, they could make a rival game to EA's NHL. But they won't. Not now. Not in the foreseeable future unless something drastic or unforeseen happens.

I'd love to see 2K put an actual NHL product on shelves again. But I'm not gonna hold my breath.

One thing I would like to potentially see 2K do is come out with a Freemium HUT alternative so they can "test the waters". Game is free to download. You get a starter pack and you can buy extra packs with money or by collecting Pucks or whatever in game currency through progression. Make it available on PC, Switch, PS4 and XB1. Make it cross-play across all platforms. Would be sick!
