I like this posting you doing, very professionally.
And you often manage to 'hit the bullseye', both with the good and bad stuff, perfect!
Me too love to play D in this game, so much that I don't mind losing the puck, which makes me more brave with stuff I try.
I hope they can continue to improve every good side of this game, they have started something really good here.
I just created a D-man in NHL20, when I get 21 for Christmas I'm gonna make a Swedish D, a Swiss Forward, and a finish goaltender. I'm excited about the Swiss forward and the prospect of playing with a European team.
Hehe yeah I like your enthusiasm and I think (and hope) that you will enjoy 21! 😊
I love how you broke down every play here and agree with almost everything you say.
I enjoy the way you're now able to disrupt certain moves and shots but I personally don't feel that puck pick ups are in a great spot; I've noticed a bunch of hamg ups so far
Thanks for this! Really well put and informative post. Loved the gif where Pionk defended actively with the stick against Kiviranta. Certainly helped me to upgarde my defensive abilities. Btw. Took me a while to get what team your are using, those alternative jerseys a thing of beauty!

You're very welcome! I plan to do more and more as I play. Just got a new puppy though and my time is limited these days
And yes those jersey's.. my goodness... absolutely love them.

Thanks! Shephard crossed with a Lab. We got her from the local humane society.
Thank you for the detailed posts you put together on what you like/dislike for NHL 21. I combined your part 2 post into your original and highlighted it at the top of these forums as our weekly discussion. We'd love to see the discussion continuing with your topics as a baseline for the conversation. We're officially past the launch date and figure this is a great thread on gathering general feedback from the community on what they like/dislike. Feel free to free write or drop a numerical list.
We know there are always areas of the game we can improve on, but it's just as equally important to know what the NHL team is also doing right so they can continue to understand what features players love, which is why I also highlighted @Sega82mega's post "I love it" as another discussion to chip in on.
We look forward to these discussions and are actively reading your threads here on the forums every day.

That is awesome and very much appreciated! Thanks!
To get back on track.. And as I already stated. Im with kid on this one, I can tell he has an eye for this game, and is doing he's best to work -with- all the game mechanics we got to take advantage of to make it as best authentic experience he can get.
And to add: keep going this way, the only way to change the 'meta' that was, (that so many complaint about) is to make thoose, "go for it-straight forward- one opportunitie to score- ops I loose the puck-now what??- guys, to sweat even more, until we all realize, hockey takes time, it goes forth and back, easy shots, hard shots, slow pace mixed with exolosive speed, offense and defense. Alot of it, it's in the game, just make it more true for everyone.

Snagged a few gifs from a couple of OVP games played this morning.
Chip Puck & Stick Lift - Like
I keep harping on chipping the puck - but I just enjoy the mechanic so very much.
Here, I was able to chip and get around. In this instance, the defender was able to retrieve the puck before I could. As I began to notice he was going to catch it before me, I timed a stick lift the moment he picks up the puck:
(notice I try to ensure my body is in a position so that the stick lift is stick-on-stick rather than risking a penalty by going through the body)
Defending with DSS and discouraging straight-line entries - LIKE
I'm finding the prevalence of DSS beginning to change habits of my opponents, particularly discouraging them from hustling in a straight line in to the offensive zone.
In the following GIFS, you can see how I'm using DSS to disrupt things quite effectively:
Fast forward to my next opponent who realizes quickly I'm not going to let him straight-line in to my zone:
You can tell I've been able to quell most of his entries, so he reverses course. The key to this play was that rather than pressure him, I backed off and invited him to attempt to get through my DSS.
He promptly turned down that invitation:
Faceoff awareness on puck drop with no possession - Dislike
I'm finding a bug - glitch - feature? - that has existed since the faceoffs allowed tie-ups: The CPU winger will fail to move until it recognizes someone has possession:
I think we'd like to see the winger move in on the puck drop rather than on recognizing possession.
Using stick lift & timing to negate Cross Crease goals - Like
Stick lift has been given a new lease on life as the primary tool (aside from laying down like a fool) for actively defending the dreaded cross-crease goal:
As you can see, because I'm controlling Perreault as a defender - I've clearly made a mistake in the neutral zone; Matthew Perreault is not a defencemen, so this gif is evidence I've made mistakes and pulled people out of position. This results in an odd-man attempt.
Luckily for me, Perreault does have some good stick checking and I was able to utilize it and bail myself out:
Backhands - Like
Backhands feel much 'snapier' this year. Maybe it's all in my head - but it feels really good being able to feel a 'snap' on a backhand and finally feel some weight behind those shots:
Excellent post @KidShowtime1867 . Do you have any thoughts on overall difficulty to score using traditional wrist or slap shots? My teammate & I are running 2 snipers and have an win percentage of 87%, yet we've only scored 3-5 goals that aren't breakout cross-crease passes, or the occasional one-timer. 3-5 goals of the 60+ we've scored and the goals scored against us are much the same. No pull-up slappers or full speed wristers that have worked wonderfully in past years. Am I alone in this one?
If you start cycling the puck and get a good pressure on the opponent, no goal is impossible. If you learn to use behind the net right, thats a killer. Alot of people dont know how to defend that area. I like snipes from the side, goalies first post, over the shoulder. Easier to put the puck just under the bar in 21 then 20.
This far I think I only let up cross creases against me.. But the reason to that is probebly cause people only see that goal as a option.
Goalies react to how you play defense infront of him. If you get a little extra surface in the o-zone, take a shot. From areas you usally not.
And that Perreault stick lift that saved you from a cross creases, shows how importen tool vision control is.. Without vision and control over your defense, it's gonna be really hard to play good D.
Just that tiny flick with the L2 just in perfect time was all you needed. Great D.

@Puckology I think you're seeing a lot of success with the cross-crease because many players online haven't adjusted to the new defence META which is more about reading a play and preventing it from developing rather than tying to catch up and stopping it from happening. Hopefully that makes sense.
In regards to scoring with regular shots, I've seen some success in this, but like you, not as much as I'd like.
I've noticed that holding the puck to the forehand and 'curling' it back just a touch isn't resulting in a buff to accuracy as in previous years. Although still successful on rare occasions, it would be nice to see the buff on a curled-forehand make a return. Especially when time & space seem to be so rare online.
What seems to be more consistent is ensuring your player is gliding and pressing shoot quickly while in the glide:

I agree you on stick lifts, it's better timing then ever in thoose, and it really feels like a robbery when you manage to steal the puck that way.
If im close the net and got it on my backhand it's never a bad idea to give it a shot.
In general it feels more like when you have a good shot, it's worth a try.
