So many people on these forums with backwards mentalities. Anyone who thinks goalies need to be buffed to stop the cross creases that go through the D should give their head a shake. The D should be given the tools to stop it in the first place.
The consistency of cross creases beating the goalie is not the issue, they should beat the goalie. The inconsistency and RNG to whether you pick off a horribly forced pass is what the issue is. EA has given D no actual input other than praying on RNG that they pick the pass off.
12 years I’ve played this game and I’ve never witnessed so much poor decision making that actually gets rewarded as much as it does in NHL 21.
Anyone defending Ea on this and blaming the playerbase for doing it obviously have never had the privilege of playing actual AAA titles where problems like this are addressed in a timely manner.
But hey, what do I know it’s just par for the course where it’s going to be yet another year I shelve NHL a few weeks in, until the next years version hoping the game actually gets improved, just to be disappointed again.
The fact this game ships in this condition:
-cross crease going through D
-the insanely easy ways to guarantee a goal on penalty shots or breakaways with 100% effectiveness that someone who just bought the game could do
-black screens during penalty shots
-FPS drops after face offs
-Franchise mode being broken as hell
-Be a pro not even realizing when you do and don’t Keep or break your promises
Just tells me to stop hoping on the game and realize it’s an incompetent dev team
Add sound cutting out for like 15 sec after goals are scored until you close and reopen the game.
The sad part about it is this was an entire generation of consoles worth of the devs working on this. This is the best version of the game over an entire lifespan of ps4/one
cross crease/one timer are fun way to attack and score goals. its also give a chance to newbies to scores more goals and give them fun and stay playing the game more longer. Its also balancing the game giving more chance to win or make the game closer at the end of 3rd period. Ea are going on the right way to make more people addictive to the game. one -timers are part of the game and we see that more in NHl real game than dekes.Dekes are for junior hockey ligue, in nhl ligue we don't see a deke every second a player is holding the puck so why complaining about cross crease/one-timer. the human gamer can play defense or use a good strategy to counter the cross crease. So i think EA still going on the right way by make this game a difference on defense and let more people scores goals
This is where EA fell apart. They started worry about about the people who didn't want to put time in to get better or grow with the game. They decided to put in ways for those new players to jump right in and be competitive and that shouldn't be the case. You could be beating brakes off of someone the entire game and in the blink of an eye they can erase a 5 goal lead WITHOUT the use of skill.

To make a one/timer or a shot.. All you have to do is to travel forward and push your r-stick in same direaction.
Easy huh?
To defend you must L2-alot, move up and down, and nothing is as automatic(and rewarded) as a one timer.
I think just such a thing, if you had to do some more motion with your hand, by doing a one timer, successful cross creases would decrease. (alot).
Yes, I agree. I'm just wondering, why they started with manual defense instead of manual offense. Because of goals goals goals.... More and more and more....

i do have a lot of time to be a game changer lol
The whole catering to new players and giving them a false sense of accomplishment needs to go. Literally all the top end competitive games revolve around massive amounts of time and skill being put into it, and actually being rewarded when you get to that point.
How does blizz expect to retain players when anyone who gets to that level just feels cheated constantly. I literally used to play this game 10 hours a day back in nhl 11-14 and actually felt like my time investment translated to winning. Now I get 2-3 games in of destroying opponents just to squeak out wins and then I log off. Just not worth playing when there’s other games I can focus getting better at an actually be rewarded

Defense isn't necessary, beacuse of 'easy' ways to score, you will be enough successful in this game just by the knowledge of the offensive part of the game. Therefore this frenzy gameplay we are having, constant chase, who will do next.
Offense need to be more weak, (speed might work, successful behind the back passes too), so that defense gets even a bigger part of the outcome of the game.
People need to feel.. Ohh I won the game beacuse I played good defense.. Not.. Mohaha, I cross creased he's sorry heinie out of here...

As long as they keep defense more manual cross creases aint going no were. But I defenetly think the gameplay can improve, so that one-dimensional players will have to sweat even more.
I'm late to the party here. But I have to address the issue that back door play and one timers are favored in this game to the point where it's almost not fun to play. It's exhausting year after year after year the only thing you need to defend against 90% of players is the backdoor play. The game does not promote creativity or improvement because players rely on the exhausted method of back door plays.
1. Goalies need to be better and reading these plays and coming across the net. It's alarming that I see a ton of posts suggesting that if a pass gets through majority of the time it would be a goal. This is simply not true. Just watch Carey Price. The reality is that on a 2 on 1 when a pass gets through the percentage to score does jump significantly but not to the 95% success rate it does in NHL 21.
2. Poke checking and Defensive skill stick are not enough of a tool to defend cross crease passes. There needs to be a stick on puck parry button. Similar to a reaction counter attack in a fighting game. A quick click of something when you are in the lane to put your blade on the puck. And using LB or L1 is not a great alternative because you are stuck in an animation and its also much harder to have any kind of precise control. This is only good for when you are out of position by a step trying to deflect a pass not intercept it.
3. Good position needs to be rewarded. I understand "scoring" sells . But how do people learn or even think to create offense differently if the game flips a coin on successful D positioning breaking an offensive play. If a D man is in a passing lane and well position, that puck is not getting through period. And with time players would learn not to rely on these tired old methods and be forced to cycle or take the shot. At this point players would be able to expand their defense beyond the cross crease pass as well.

See this is where EA has failed this series so much over the years, by listening to feedback like this...
AI Goalies should not be buffed to make up for EAs incompetence on balancing offence/defence, which is HUMAN controlled. If you want a goalie that is going to cheat and make big cross crease saves, get a human goalie at that point.
You’re comparing Carey Price, the best goalie in the world, to an AI goalie that shouldn’t have the ability to steal games in an online situation. The AI should never be the determining factor in who wins and loses a game. Human input should be the determining factor.
Buff the cross crease interceptions... make a button to actually pick it off and get rid of the RNG aspect of just hoping you pick it off. If you do that, you don’t need an AI goalie that’s going to make highlight reel saves, because if someone scores off it, you were beat defensively and deserve to be scored on anyways.
Anytime I hear anyone asking for buffed AI in an online game, it just makes me cringe

I clearly used Carey Price as to make a point.
Any goalie is capable of making a cross crease save. The AI goalies have 0 ability to track the puck left to right. The scoring percentage on these plays when the puck gets through is close to 100% this is simply not even close to realistic. So because the goalie is AI he can't make a desperation save? What kind of logic are you employing. Even if the AI stopped 2/10 cross crease passes that's still an 80% success rate which is soooo high. Right now it's 10/10 success rate.
The problem isn't one sided as you eluded to the fact that when you get beat defensively you deserve to be scored on. I agree with you to an extent. Right now if you get beat on a back door play its automatically a goal.
You mention Carey Price being the best goalie in the world and an AI goalie should not be to that level.
How come AI players have Ovechkin finishing type ability on these plays then? If an AI goalie is incapable of tracking a puck, how come an AI player is capable of finishing the play 95% of the time? I'm referencing EASHL for this point.
The logic can go both ways.
At the end of the day, AI goalies are weak in this game, period.
They have not built goaltenders to defend the net the way they've built the scoring in the game, period.
I'm not asking for goalies to be ridiculous but at least to react in good time to tracking the puck left to right.

Well imo even the AI skaters are too strong and should be nerfed further. AI should have almost no aggression in this game, far too many players choose to not even switch to D and would rather their AI play it for them which tells me they are saying they think the AI plays better than they can.
If there’s ever a situation a human would rather the AI be in control of half the aspect of the game, you know they aren’t tuned correctly

Bumping this post for more feedback from others on cross crease goals and stick lifting for EASHL Dmen.
Thoughts?[/quote]
Just got off a game in 3v3. They got 9 goals on us, and 8 of them were from cross crease goals. They would come down on a breakaway, and glide to the side until the other player arrived and they did the cross crease. On many of those plays I was right in the lane of the pass, a few times the puck went between the stick and my skates for an easy goal, and other times it went through my feet ( Not like my feet were open, the puck just went through the feet themselves.)
I’m not sure what else a defender has to do in terms of positioning, because it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Once that pass goes off for the cross crease, nothing can stand in the way of that puck getting across.
Also on that note, a few of those cross crease goals the scorer was behind the goal line but was able to slap it in from an impossible angle.
If this can be fixed in some way the game can improve exponentially, and make 3v3 fun, but right now it’s a garbage game and takes away players from 6v6, which has actual skill to get goals, not just cross crease over and over

If the puck is clipping through skates, we need to see that. Can you get some video next time it happens? The same goes for the shots you're seeing from behind the goal line.
As far as defending these passes goes, obviously, it's more challenging this year. The dev team is aware of the feedback on this issue. We'll have to wait and see if changes are made.
I hope it's only feedback taken from when the puck is clipping through objects. That will of course make an already challenging task even more difficult.
But other then that, the challenge of playing defense is the most fun that happen to this serie in a long time. The hardest part is defenetly to have the power to resist thoose players that build there game around high speed and force the puck their way. (and sometimes even through objects).

It’s crazy how games like rocket league, ones that have super challenging entry skill levels and even sharper learning curves as you progress, are universally loved for the most part. It’s almost like people want a challenge and want to feel themselves get better at games and be rewarded when that skill is rewarded. Compare that to games like FIFA and NHL where mastering 1-3 things that aren’t even remotely hard compared to necessary skills to even compete in a game like rocket league where the community is constantly complaining and not enjoying the game.
We need to get to a place where knowing hockey and making correct plays is much more incentivized. Spinning in the corner until your opponent’s AI forgets what he’s supposed to be doing and passing in back door should not be a viable option. It’s not fun, it’s not skilled, it’s boring garbage. Al GWC games I’ve watched have been boring garbage. Board bounces and LT abuse capped off with a one-timer. YAAWWWWNNNNN.
