How often are facial scans updated?

Prev1
Answer: NOT OFTEN ENOUGH

A star player like Artemi Panarin should not have his facial scan untouched over the course of FOUR YEARS. These images are from NHL 17 and NHL 21. Look at Panarin's current picture in 21 (not the scan) and tell me why there was a decision to leave his face the same as his rookie facial scan. (And yes, I know most facial scans in this game are bad.)

Also - a small, unimportant note, but hair has NO physics. You knock a players helmet off and their hair just stays there. No motion whatsoever. It's not important but it's a little weird.

  • okay maybe there is just zero effort put into hairstyles. zxom6h0tr340.jpeg
  • at least Panarin has a face scan....however, I also think that EA could put more efforts into the amount of new face scans and keep them updated. Or give us more possibilities to edit the player likeness by ourselves.
  • Hopefully next gen will be a fresh start.. This kinda stuff should be perfect for that... I guess.

I'm hopeful for that. Will NHL 22 be next gen?

I'd expect improved face scans going into next gen titles. The pandemic made it difficult for face scans across all of our sports titles because of the difficulties such as travel (flight restrictions or players and employees opting not to risk COVID-19 infections).
  • Thanks EA_Blueberry for the reply. Not want to contradict you, just one word. According to last years threads EA must have tons of scanned faces in their archives. But EA never released them so far. I guess due to licencing issues. I understand that you cannot scan new faces due to Covid. Instead, why not finally release the scans which EA took during showcases in the past few years? just would be great and much appreciated.

Another thing the virus has stripped us of. RIP.

Can only hope for the best for the future, because that hair for Mika Zibanejad is NOT it.

I still don’t quite get how you can almost perfectly replicate the face of Howie Morenz, who has been dead since 1937, but can’t have players that are alive, and either retired or still active. Really disappointing that Dave Keon looks nothing like him.

This thing makes me wonder also. Clearly EA can do the face models using only photos. I understand the challenges thatCOVID brings, but it’s really disappointing to have like ten new scans while the same amount of players disappear due to retirement etc.

Also interested of these showcase scans. Would be more than happy to get them with the next roster updates and that would keep me playing the game.
  • You don't even face scans so covid should not be an excuse.Look at some of the alumni players, some look amazing and don't tell me they were face scans, some were passed away. They can make realistic faces from photos so there should be a lot more faces.
  • I meant you don't need to face scan for realistic faces. You can use photos. My bad,I was typing too fast.
  • If we had the Frostbite Engine I think graphics would become much better. FIFA has some beautiful scans of players. I don't think the current engine can put out the graphics many of you all want.
  • The scans don't have to be perfect.Just a good player likeness.
  • The scans don't have to be perfect.Just a good player likeness.

My thoughts exactly. I told someone from EA in another topic that if we could have 10 players per year with 100% correct face scan or all the current line ups with 90% correct faces based on photos I guarantee that the players would choose the latter.

It’s really disappointing and steals away the realistic feeling when playing the franchise mode when you have like five players with likenessess and 15 players are Joe NHL:s. The alternative would be a good Create a player feature where we could edit all the facial proportions and create all the missing players ourselves. The current in like "choose the closest from these 10 options who actually somehow look like humans". Create a player has been the same for years now with the same face/eyebrow/hair/ facial hair options.

  • it's a pity that not one single NHL team is completed with real faces. San Jose was very close to it last year but now it looses again due to transfers. Still hope to see more scans in future roster updates.

Wow..this is a huge disappointment, considering how many players here are pretty good. Hampus Lindholm is the Ducks #1 D-man. Silfverberg has been a good scorer for the Ducks for a while. Derek Stepan is a VETERAN who had notable moments with the Rangers. PLD, as you said, is CBJ's 1st line center. I could go on, but this is not good.

I'm hopeful that when NHL 22 goes next gen, they'll bring frostbite with it. They have a reason to bring it in now - they're upgrading, so why not?

I really hope they scrap most of the game after this year and start over. They keep making edits with a set that just is *OK*. Not good, not bad. Just ok.

It's like editing the wrong parts of a slider set expecting to get better results.
  • Sounds like facial scans is much more importen then I ever thought. I have never really bother, with the idea 'a face is a face' as long as it looks a - little - like the real deal. Maybe EA and I, share the same type of attitude regarding this..

But I like you guys that care over this, you are hardcore.

And there's really no question, to have this kinda stuff in order, would defenetly be a good thing for the overall impression.
