What is the deal with late hits?

I feel like you are able to finish your hit way too late without getting a penalty. I know hitting is fun but it is sort of ridiculous when I am already in the neutral zone when I hear the boards trembling. I think this teaches some bad habits not necessarily hitting but habit of playing yourself out giving your opponent some nice rush chances. Has it been like this in earlier games?
