As a guy who plays 80% of the time as a goalie, I can understand your frustration. I have had games where I've been lit up, and other games where I've stole the game for my team. I play exclusively in 6 on 6 drop ins (have an odd schedule which makes syncing up for team games a nightmare).
But, like others have said, as frustrating as it can be to have an 8 spot put up against your team, imagine how frustrating it is for the goalie on a team that constantly gives up breakaways and wide open 1 timers. My biggest issue is with D-Men who are too worried about getting breakaway goals. It is a team game and very seldom is it entirely hung on just the goalie.
I just had a game where my team had 8 shots (not good ones) and took a million penalties... we lost 5-4 30 shots to 8. The other goalie was pretty bad and i had a surprisingly good game. They had at least three 3 on 0's two of which i saved....
Rarely do i see a close game with a "bad goalie". You cant expect goalies to save cross crease goals, 2 on 1's and breakaways. Of course a goalie wants to save them, and its easy to look bad when you are anticipating a cross crease. Forwards should NOT have enough time to stop skating and glide into the slot. If someone has time to pick a corner and they are a sniper, you have to be in absolute perfect position.
Goalie isnt my main but i think it helps with defense to know how damn hard goalie is in this game.
if you are losing 5-0, the goalie isnt the only problem

Almost without fail the complaints I hear about the goalie are from forwards (particularly wingers) who have no sweet clue where to be in the defensive zone. Often just collapsing in front of the net creating a congested mess, or hovering outside the blue line waiting for a hail mary when the other team has the puck. It would be laughable if it werent so horribly frustrating.

Yeah i mean there are some really bad goalies, but skaters dont get called out almost ever.... I once played a game where it glitched out and i couldnt touch the puck, poke check, hit or anything.... it took them until 5 minutes left in the game before they even noticed... thats how little forwards are scrutinized.
Do not complain about goalies, play your defense properly. As a goalie I can say I'm letting in too many goals only in case when I have no defense in front of me. In every single game I can see a lot of breakaways, two on one attempts, cross crease passes not defended properly, my defenders constantly out of position. Moreover, is too easy to snipe me even when I'm in perfect position but my goalie build simply decline to make a save. No defense no win.
I see what the OP is saying. It sucks having a terrible goalie ruin a game for you because they are "practicing"... just remove RP from drop in then if this is purely a practice mode.
Yes a goalie should quit if they are playing terribly to give their team a chance. Consider it a goalie being pulled.
However this is only for those games where it really is the goalies fault. Giving up multiple break aways and playing awful team D is not a good reason for a goalie to quit.
The position is hard to play, but that's on EA. We had some pretty good goalies back in NHL 10,11,12,13,14. I know this because I played it quite a bit and had a lot of fun. It was possibly to have a 32 save shut out. If you were good.
The goalie controls since the leap to xbox one/ps4 have taken a huge toll on the position. Goalies are completely unresponsive now. It's a crapshoot and a guessing game. There is no intuitive way to play goalie. It just plain sucks.
So first let's fix goalies. Make them playable again. Make them important. Make them preferable over a computer.
This, like many silly and easily fixable issues in this game is entirely on EA. Their inability to release a good and balanced product year after year is just mind boggling. Always one step forward 3 steps back.
My original post was a request for when it is the goalies fault and especially when facing an AI G.
I just played yet another game when the opposing G quit before the opening face off. We have two AI D and we’re all back checking so our G can’t say we were playing defensively. Anyway, he lets in 3 weak ones to put us down 3-0. We ask him to quit and no response. We eventually tie it up 3-3. 4-4 midway through the 3rd. He lets in another weak goal. We tie it up to take it to OT. I score a net crashing goal to win the game.
In a game like this he should’ve quit after the second or third weak goal he let in. I think we ended up out shooting the other team and AI G 30 something to 10.
He was definitely the reason this game was so close and we almost lost. He was a level 3 and didn’t have any traits added to his player also.
As someone who has been playing this game since the original on Sega and EASHL since 12/13 (as a G and RD) I can clearly see when someone doesn’t know how to play their position and this G definitely didn’t.
Very good defensive battle between both teams only getting a couple of shots on net. We score to PP goals to end the first up 2-0.
Start of the second period we were surprised to find all their players quit except the goalie and RD. I had a good sense of how this game was going to go as I’ve played on both sides of games like this. Game should’ve been DISC at this point as we signed up for 6’s not 2’s.
These games are so advantageous for the team with 4 AI’s especially when the right strategies are set for them. They can easily strip humans of the puck, very hard to get the puck off of, forecheck very well, don’t lose stamina, are generally faster, don’t take many penalties while drawing a lot, make perfect passes the majority of the time, can snipe and always automatically knock in rebounds for goals. The list goes on why having so many of them are an advantage. To no fault of our goalie the 3 AI forwards set up a tick tack toe play for a very unstoppable goal. I mention it’s going to be like this to the goalie and he might want to quit and he does after the AI’s tie it up. 5 of us remaining adjust our play but our AI goalie lets in a weak goal and they’re now up 3-2. Our D jumps up into the play and scores a breakaway goal to tie it at 3.
With the strategies the other team AI is set to and their RD setting up plays etc we essentially don’t have much of a chance even with an AI G and him with an human G.
It’s just a garbage way of playing and by midway through the second were down 5-3.
At that point I had enough and quit. Playing with 4-5 friends that know each other and are all on mics we still have a good chance of winning but with randoms not on mics, not at all.
Also If I wanted to play against so many AI I’d play an offline mode which I haven’t since I started playing 6’s in EASHL in maybe 12 or 13. That just shows how much I hated playing offline mode against AI’s. Playing AI is just not fun and actually boring for me.
At least our G was courteous enough to quit.
In games like that though they should automatically end (disqualify the other team) when it gets to be less than 3 humans on one team.
Also take away the ability to call for passes and make the AI shoot. Without those two abilities one or two human players won’t be able to use the AI to their advantage the way this RD did and as I have also in many games myself.

Okay this is what we can work with.
Let's say the goalie controls were simplified.
Are YOU going to play goalie? How can we encourage more people to play goalie so there's a larger pool of skilled goalies?
Should there be exclusive rewards catered to goalie challenges?
Should there be a shootout mode where the goalies get shots taken at them one after another? (Boy would I love a mode like that like they have in FIFA's mini games while the match is loading up)
There's been suggestions to not allow goalies in any games other than 6v6.
Goalie leaderboard with exclusive rewards?
Let's be honest, it's not the most glamorous position. You're praised when you pull off a shutout and the one blame goes to win you lose a 2-1 game after giving up that last minute score. It's a tough position to live up to.

I like where this is headed. I love the goalie position (my son plays IRL) and I have always wanted to take this position on but:
it's a difficult position to play with the controls and the learning curve seems steep. I feel like I needed to have started several years ago
it's a thankless position
I am not sure how to start the journey in a "safe space". i.e. Being the subject of abuse from things like what the OP has said when you are still learning.
"Should there be exclusive rewards catered to goalie challenges? "
"Goalie leaderboard with exclusive rewards?"
These might work for some but it wouldn't be enough for me to start playing/learning the position (they would be nice perks however).
For me I think it would mainly a combination of
having solid controls
at least semi-predictability/consistency in outcomes
a safe place to hone your skills, and that would be more than just a one on one shootout mode. Game situations. Can you play goalie in the practice mode scenarios?
I think removing stats and the RP system from drop ins would go a long way to keep less goalies from quitting after letting up 1-2 goals. It’s just not fun and fair when your team goes up 1-2 nothing and now you have to face an AI goalie that plays usually great and that team ideas that to their advantage to come back. It’s also not fair to your goalie that is still playing.
Also make the AI goalie really weak. Sometimes no matter how many good to great chances you get against them they’ll still be unbeatable.
As someone who started out as a Dman and Goalie back in 12/13 I easily know when a team is playing good defensively. Problem is even when you are the offence still has the advantage. I remember when playing D was actually fun and we had a better chance of stopping a lot of goals compared to now.
Even as a converted RW I back check, play very defensively and watch my turnovers in the offensive zone. Problem is my Dman take this as an opportunity to ignore their position and play a lot more offensively. It’s a fine line as this takes away my ability to play offensively which is primarily my job. Regardless, I just want to win so I’ll adjust my play.
I don’t know the answer but there needs to be more incentive not to quit games and especially goalies when down a goal or two very early in the game.
Maybe different rewards for the amount of games they finish like custom helmets? Something maybe like if they finish a game their games completed goes +1 and I’d they quit a game it goes - 1. The goal would be to reach + X amount of games. I’m not usually one for special gear but I think custom helmets is something a lot of goalies have been asking for the past couple years. It would be kinda cool to have a custom helmet that no other G has.
Also have a goalie tutorial practice mode like the current one that shows how to shoot, defend and take face offs etc. I think these should be requirements for all players before you can play a drop in. This would at least teach the basics of playing D and G. One might say then why should a veteran player like myself have to complete them? Unless EA can differentiate the veterans from the beginners I wouldn’t have a problem completing them as they should be easy and quick to complete for a player with my experience and skill level and more.
I know offence sells but I just want to see more attention and rewards (not talking about physical gear etc) to Dman and Goalies but it’s been this way for as long as I can remember playing EASHL. All we have to do is look at the leaderboards and scores of the games. The top offensive players can have more than a thousand goals and assists meanwhile the top goalies have low save percentages in the 800’s. I’d like to see that gap closed a lot.
Goalie can be really fun and challenging to play but not when we know the odds are drastically against us no matter how well we play.

If nothing else, this should be catching the attention of the stats guys at EA (I know they have them!)
Also more acknowledgement in the Stars of the Game!
Pretty much no matter how many saves you make like 19 out of 20 in a win, you won’t get a star. The forward with one assist will over you. You pretty much need to pitch a SO to get a game star.
Depending on how many shots you face a G with a SV% .900 or more should get a game star because of how hard it is to do so.

Being able to go left to right then left again without leaving your crease would help... If you are in the butterfly and you go right, you are sliding so far you are out of your crease. And then when you try to go back it takes a solid second to recognize the input. If you bite on a Deke you should still have some chance of getting back to the other side....
How it is now you are either diving poke checking and hoping that works. Or doing as little as possible hoping the skater shoots it at you. When it comes to breakaways at least
Doesn't need to be simplified just make it responsive. Also maybe have some assistance so you don't slide so far over. When I want to slide right I don't really want to slide 6ft right

Do you have your “precision” movements set to on or off?
Mine is set to on and I hold L1 when I don’t want to use it. I don’t have any issues you mentioned above when using “precision” movements correctly.
Drop-ins are a steaming mess for the most part. Best not to take them too seriously and if you run across guys you can play with... stick with them as long as you can.
Looks like there's a few of you here that'd be fun to play with. Hope to see ya around.
Take it easy on the tendys. If they let in softies but are still clearly giving effort. Should encourage them. Not rip them. Offline vs online are 2 different animals as to game flow and gotta practice somewhere. 🤷♂️

I cannot say anything that hasn't already been said to disagree with your premise, but I can say don't use outright falsehoods to support it. jonlol from BTP is one of the best goalie resources out there, and he ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT advise goalies to quit the game when they are struggling. So you can say what you want, but don't attribute your opinions to one of the most trusted members of the goalie community.

He did say it in one of his videos a few years ago. I even recall him saying the threshold was 5 goals.
If you’re having a bad game in net but your team is having a good game with a good chance of winning then it’s still a good idea to quit.
Same goes if your playing against a super AI G after a human quits. I still think it’s common courtesy to quit to give your team the best chance of winning.
In the real NHL if a G is playing like crap and not giving their team a chance to win then they get “pulled”. Same idea applies in this game.
I just played the following game as a G.
Midway through the second period were up 5-0 outshooting them 15-0 and then their goalie quits. They get a weak shot on net and I make the easy save. What do I do? Even though my team is playing awesome defensively I quit to give my team the best chance of winning because there is absolutely 100% no chance whatsoever that the opposing team is going to score a minimum of 6 goals against and AI goalie.

You described it perfectly. Randoms with human G do not have any chance.
I like where this is headed. I love the goalie position (my son plays IRL) and I have always wanted to take this position on but:
"Should there be exclusive rewards catered to goalie challenges? "
"Goalie leaderboard with exclusive rewards?"
These might work for some but it wouldn't be enough for me to start playing/learning the position (they would be nice perks however).
For me I think it would mainly a combination of
And if forwards knew how to play their position in their own end (LOL)
Yup agreed. This is what I was hinting at above.
If nothing else, this should be catching the attention of the stats guys at EA (I know they have them!)
You know I never really noticed this until you pointed it out but it's true!
>Even InbetweenThePipes (well known goalie YouTuber for years) states a goalie should quit if they’re having a bad game and not giving their team a chance to win etc...
