Hi, long time no talk guys. Someone linked me to this thread over discord and I'd like to say that this is not anything I encourage.

Human goalies, I encourage you to play the games through even if you're having a bad game. There's always things to be learned. At the end of the day, drop-in is a mode with a heavy focus on the individual. If you want to play goalie and you're losing by 15 goals, that's fine. See the game through. If a bad game is going to affect your mental health, than quit. It's not the end of the world, it's just a video game. Don't let other people affect your decision.

For those wondering where I've been. I still post on youtube, instagram, and run a goalie community discord that everyone is welcome in (if you can bring a positive attitude and keep our server non-toxic).

I don't visit these forums because discord is an easier venue to collect community feedback from. I know the devs see your opinions on here regardless. It's a full time job defending your self from the trolls in this place, so I don't waste my energy by checking it every day. I still would love to hear your feedback, so again please hit me up on any other of the channels I listed.

I’ve been watching your videos for years. I even refer you and your YouTube channel to several beginner/intermediate goalies that want to learn more and get tips on how to improve etc.

I still recall you saying something along the lines of if you’re having a bad game and let in 5 or more goals to quit (for the benefit of your team) and try again in the next game. I know this because I’ve been doing this when I play net since. You’ve obviously changed your opinion on this.

So now you’re saying not to quit no matter how bad you’re playing? It’s ok to let in 10-15 goals? Is that really fair to your teammates if they’re playing well and you’re the reason they’re losing? When I’m playing G I’ll even request a teammate to leave if they’re playing so horrible (or just plain suck) and are the sole reason we’re losing.

I’ll even quit games as a G when we’re winning or probably going to win. Even last night my team was up 5-0 midway through the second and then the opposing human goalie quit. My team was playing excellent defensively but once I made an easy routine save on the opposing teams first shot on net I still quit. I could’ve easily finished the game for an easy win and a probable SO but I still quit to “even” up the goaltending giving my team also an AI G.

No offense, but this seems incredibly silly to me. Unless the other team starts scoring and making it close - and even then - I am not sure why you would quit just because the other goalie quit.

I usually only quit if it’s under 5 and the opposing human goalie quits. For this game though and I highly doubt the opposing team had any chance of coming back let alone score a goal but I’m not even going to give them that. 😈

AI vs AI G’s just keeps it even.

It really [profanity removed] me off when I have to deal with this. I'm pretty exclusively a human goalie. I'm doing my damndest out there, and I for one don't appreciate [profanity removed] saying quit.
Tonight, I had a special brand of [profanity removed]. My own defender decided to turn, either try to pass the puck into my net, or simply drop the puck for the opposing forwards. He cost us 2 goals in that fashion. But, I can get booted for playing the top of the crease, and for trying to handle the puck in the marked area. Nice.

Edit: Removed profanity. Please keep your posts clean. Thank you. -CM

The position is hard to play, but that's on EA. We had some pretty good goalies back in NHL 10,11,12,13,14. I know this because I played it quite a bit and had a lot of fun. It was possibly to have a 32 save shut out. If you were good.

The goalie controls since the leap to xbox one/ps4 have taken a huge toll on the position. Goalies are completely unresponsive now. It's a crapshoot and a guessing game. There is no intuitive way to play goalie. It just plain sucks.

So first let's fix goalies. Make them playable again. Make them important. Make them preferable over a computer.

Okay this is what we can work with.

Let's say the goalie controls were simplified.

Are YOU going to play goalie? How can we encourage more people to play goalie so there's a larger pool of skilled goalies?

Should there be exclusive rewards catered to goalie challenges?

Should there be a shootout mode where the goalies get shots taken at them one after another? (Boy would I love a mode like that like they have in FIFA's mini games while the match is loading up)

There's been suggestions to not allow goalies in any games other than 6v6.

    Goalie leaderboard with exclusive rewards?

Let's be honest, it's not the most glamorous position. You're praised when you pull off a shutout and the one blame goes to win you lose a 2-1 game after giving up that last minute score. It's a tough position to live up to.

You could have the goalies not let in a high % of shots when they are actually in great position to stop the shot for starters. We played a game the other day and won 4-5 and I sent a msg after the game to the G to the effect of "good tending, you were in position for 3 of those".

The biggest frustration in this game is doing everything right at G/D and still being punished.

You could also give the goalies non-clunky controls, not change the button layout after they develop muscle memory to them and give them the movement needed to counter the insane agility and fully extended stick control that forwards have.

Also you should be required to play at least 1 friggin game offline at G before jumping in EASHL. The players that decide to try it out for the first time online without even knowing the controls create impatience and a toxic attitude towards all goalies.

EA either needs to nerf AI G’s or do something to discourage Human G’s to not quit and/or penalise the ones that do after only 1-3 goals.

The past couple days I’ve witnessed as usual.

Game starts out as full 6’s. Our team goes up 3-0 early in the first. That human G quits along with a couple of their players. Our G was playing ok so I gave him the benefit of the doubt after he let up one to make it 3-1. Then I request he leave (stating nothing against his play) after it becomes 3-3. Final score 6-5 for them.

Another game, very much the same thing but their human G quit after letting up the first 2 shots on goal along with both Dman. 2-0 us. Their AI G proceeds to be dominant in net stopping everything we threw at the net. Their forwards take full advantage of their AI D and eventually take the lead 3-2. At this point our Human G should’ve quit and definitely after they made it 5-2. We fought hard to make it 5-5 but our goalie simply sucked. Final score was 8-7 for them.

I’ve played games on the other side too many times. Also as a veteran G myself I know the odds are hugely stacked for a Human G against an AI goalie. No matter how good a Human G is along with the forwards and defence the odds are so in favour of the team with the AI G and a couple of AI players.

I’ve tried to explain this to so many goalies but they just don’t get it or refuse to believe it until it’s too late and they’ve lost the game!

Even last night I decided to play a few games in net. One of them I made 12 saves in the first period and our team was up 1-0. Their Human goalie quits so I decided to quit also to not give the other team the advantage in net.

I also quit another game today after my team went up 3-0 and their Human G and a couple forwards quit. Even though I was playing well, once their AI forward easily sniped me to make it 3-1 I quit. I actually got a few compliments after the game for my goaltending ability and that I gave my team a chance to win which they did 5-2.

It’s just **** when players quit (usually the ones that suck) and are replaced by overly competent and even great AI players. The remaining Human players (myself included) that are good really know how to use them to their advantage. I’ve also come back from too many games when I’ve been on that side too. It’s very easy when you have the often awesome AI G and AI players as teammates.

Something definitely needs to be done about quitters and games like these. The AI G should definitely be weaker when replacing a Human G. I also suggest disabling the ability to call for passes from the AI players and also the ability to control them to shoot. That should take away some of the advantage of Human players have playing with AI ones vs a team full of Humans. I know because I’ve done it myself too many games!
