PSA - High end goalies are worthless - confirmed

Tonight I finally gave in and switched from 95 Vasilevskiy to the 83 Bishop that everyone else uses. I can confirm that I'm immediately seeing better goalie play after nine games, and it's not close.

I've cycled through the high end and MSP goalies by selling and spending far too much coin, so I wanted to help everyone out and hopefully stop you from making the same mistake I did.

Do not spend coin on goalies other than the tallest 80+ you can find, and a bronze backup syn plug. The goalie system is completely broken, and high end goalies are a total and complete waste of coin. I know most players (and EA even though they don't admit it) know this already, however for the few that may not, take a lesson from thousands of other players and don't waste coin on goalies with a good OVR - all goalie ratings are irrelevant once you get above 80,
just find someone tall.

Have a great rest of the week everyone!

  • I have 95 Vasy on the bench and 92 Annunen as my starter... Helps slightly, but he too can give up a couple of **** goals every other game. I unpacked the 84 Bishop last week. Will use him once I get my syns sorted out.
  • yes I can only confirm, I have the 95 Fleury, but it's no better than the 86 Gibson, so my opinion: It was a waste of money
  • I think it was Stephlefan6AX that said it pretty good.

If you cant defend yourself against the cross crease it dosent really mather what goalie you got.

Considering 99% only take shots if it's the cross crease one-timer - and it's often a sure goal - which makes the goalies save % pretty crappy.
  • You are absolutely right. Goalies have been broken in this game for literally a DECADE now. Attributes mean next to nothing (and some actually make them worse - aggression) and height is everything. The relationship between shooting attributes and goalie attributes are completely out of whack. Those "glove high" and "glove low" etc. reaction ratings mean NOTHING. Give me an 80 Bishop over a 99 Roy any day. As both shooting ratings and goalie ratings go up equally throughout the year, shooters somehow begin to develop an advantage that lets them score ridiculous goals. All that matters is height so you have a bigger hit box to stop the puck since those reactions mean nothing and goalie play is broken.

Their rebound control is idiotic - they kick rebounds off slow backhanders into the slot right onto the tape of the other team, no matter their ratings. They have no idea how to hug the post and not get beaten shortside high from horrible angles, no matter their ratings.

They will all get beaten by the same few exploit goals over and over again, with no thought to shot placement on the shooters' part. GWC is an exploit execution contest. NHL 2k games from 15 years ago had MUCH better goaltending that NHL 21.

Just one of the many years or decades old issues with the game that haven't been fixed. But we can do the lacrosse goal!
  • I mean we already knew this and it's been the same for years. They've done some improvements in terms of stick side goals, fewer long wrist shots going, and 1 hand tuck going in but that seems to be it. There are still about half a dozen ways you can score that aren't cross crease that are able to be abused. However as demonstrated above, those that blindly support this garbage will simply say "get gud" in one way or another, and while there is an element of that, it ignores the synergy of how hockey is played. Then again, this isn't actual hockey so there we go.

I know it's been that way for a while, just thought it would be good to put out there for newer players so that they don't waste resources on goalies. Agree with all of your points though.
