So the talk is that the NHL is back with ESPN on a 7yr deal. I wonder if this will impact the future of the NHL series.
What are you thoughts?
This will only impact the future in terms of presentation. I can't see them doing anything differently than they are now, just replacing any existing branding with ESPN branding. Even the be a pro mode didn't actually get any true improvements with presentation. Just lipstick on a pig.
Don't get too excited. ESPN hasn't given a flying fig about hockey in about 15 years, they will be practically starting from scratch as far as staffing this up goes.
My guess is that this will be largely an ESPN+ app situation, which I'm fine with.

Takes more to rock my boat.. 😏
Nah, but maybe they start to care by doing this...?
And as I see it. The presentation in this serie has never been anything thats been worth to mention.
So can it really get any worst?.. And anything, even the smallest thing, that can improve this game, i'll take it, with open arms!
"It is highlighted by: exclusive coverage of the Stanley Cup Final on ABC in four of the seven years of the agreement, with the ability to simulcast/megacast on ESPN+ and additional ESPN networks; the return of live NHL action to ESPN networks with 25 exclusive national regular-season games on ABC or ESPN; 75 national regular-season games per season produced by ESPN that will stream exclusively on both ESPN+ and Hulu; half of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on ABC and ESPN each season; and coverage annually of NHL’s Face-off (opening night games), the NHL All-Star Game and Skills Challenge, plus other NHL special events each season.
Additionally, the NHL’s out-of-market streaming package, with more than 1,000 games (formerly on NHL.TV), will now be available for fans to stream only as part of an ESPN+ subscription."
Not that any of this matters I just wonder if they will continue to use the current announcing group and such.
Title should read ESPN has tv rights, it has nothing to do with EAs game, the contract for NBC sports ends at the end of the year. So more games on ESPN and ABC
The only thing We might get is espn announcers and advertising on the boards. Other than that I don’t see what difference this makes to EA NHL.
That would be cool though. ESPN announcers.
Some new voices to listening to.
Nothing wrong with Ray Ferraro, but been some time with that man.. 😊
Actually it might be old voices if they went back to Bill and Gary.
Also the new deal is worth like double per year want they had with NBC. Around 400-420mil per

And as always I guess we wont hear a thing from EA. Before just some months away from realese.
I wish it could be a more open - news channel into whats going on 'behind the scenes'.
How things going with the build of the new frostbite engine and perhaps there's - Something - to say about this..? I dunno...
But all we can do is just guess, wild, to left and right.
I can understand it might ruining 'the hype' and it's wise to save the big Gun powder. But would be nice with sooome little news... 😬
I'm not a fan of The Mouse and it was a crime the way they treated the league last time they had the rights.
Considering this move allows them to shutter NHL.tv and move out of market streaming to ESPN+ will add value to that service.
They will have multiple broadcast partners but it is hard to see more than 2 wanting to broadcast in the US. NBC is the favorite to remain but FOX and CBS are in need of live programing and might be willing to overpay. Like the deal ESPN has with the NFL, they really want the rights to highlights and will have at least 1 weekly show similar to NHL2Night.
NBCSN will shutdown after this current NHL season and USA network and NBC's streaming service (which is a banned word here) will take on the live broadcast but losing the All-star game and possibly the outdoor games they might pass anyway.
I wouldn't expect any news on announcers until after this season but their last teams are way old and doubt they'd be used for anything other than a special here and there.

Oh I wouldn't expect any new announcers this year. That stuff is already set in stone for NHL 22.
But let's all be honest. We'd love to get that ESPN NHL theme in the game from the old days.

I sure hope. Anything to get “GOAL” off the screen every time I score is a win for me. Maybe we can get series records on the scorebug in the playoffs? Arena atmosphere that doesn’t get dead silent at times, especially after a goal? Running out of props with an awesome intro? Remember those from 2002? Man, those were awesome. Should outsource presentation to SDS or 2k because EA games have proven they can’t and won’t get it right across the board.

But if I understand it right, ESPN is the real deal.. Top horse.. And that could never be a bad thing.

As zombie said.. And with frostbite + next gen +ESPN, all up in the same game.
I think I will like this lipstick on the sexy pig! 😀

EA has an agreement with NHL and NHL has an agreement with ESPN.
I don't think so.
EA used the NBC presentation package for a few years and ultimately axed it for one they put together in-house.
Well in that case, ESPN might not have anything to do with our game.
All tough it would defenetly be a realistic-boost if EA NHL hockey game were using the same broadcast network as the 'real NHL do.

Hehe that was so much 80's - 90'.
Gets me a little bit MacGyver feelings. 😄
But yes, I do love it!
And thats 'only' covers the TV rights for about half of the league's playoffs and regular-season games.
I wonder 'why?' they put out so much money, is hockey so much on is way forward?
Guess this dosent give Anaheim Ducks the rights to get back to their classic jersey's... Cause espn owns of Walt Disney..? 🙄🤔🤷♀️
No No Disney owns ESPN and the rest of the world if they want.
Disney is some powerful stuff.
Should start it's own country. All tough, they already got there Disney - land.
Like Peter did in family guy...
😊
