It sucks . I'll list why:

-skating for this game sucks . the only part of skating that doesnt suck, is skating in a straight line. thats the ONLY part that doesnt suck.

-stick lift sucks . Literally youre best bet as a defender is to skate next to the forward when he's coming down the rush and hoping he loses the puck as he tries to dangle his stick through your body and skates.

- Rebound control sucks. Want a sure fire way to inevitability score ? throw any type of shot low on net and have your other two wingers crash the net . Watch as it doesnt matter if even the whole opposing team is by the goalie , the rebound will inevitably go to your wingers stick.

-Defense in general sucks . Inconsistent pass interceptions , combined with inconsistent rewards for proper poke check, combined with Inconsistent rewards for taking the body, combined with NO stick lift , combined with a severe lack of skating ability as opposed to the player WITH the puck, combined with the overall skating engine and its Suck; Makes defense blow

tie ups in front of net suck. With the inability to make small precise adjustable skating movements , tie ups suck hard

In conclusion Ea suck less .

  • Post is true. Game is bad.
  • i agree with one, tie up button config needs to be changed. Who doesn't hold L2 in front of the net? Why would you make L2 the evasion.

Tie up and stick lift should be assigned to the same button. and the counter should be the same button.. maybe "X"

sticks be a flying in the crease.
  • I'm inclined to agree with pretty much all of this. The game is once again more frustrating than fun even when you're winning games. The game isn't "broken" as in, it's a playable game, but it's not a rewarding experience to play defense on a consistent basis. There's too many **** moments. Someone stated somewhere else on these forums that EA should pick a direction and stick with it. There's no vision for where this game is currently headed. I think a focus on balancing the game, and providing consistent control on all areas of the ice should be a focus instead of hyper realism.
  • Hard to argue with OP, agree on all points, especially the defense.
  • Long time NHL player here..agree with u 100% op. The goalies this year are the worst that they've ever been. How teams can just throw garbage shots once they get into the zone and get rebound goals off them are infuriating. There's just no skill anymore

I used to exploit the computer with these cheese rebound goals back in like 2010 on the PS3. Can't remember if that was the year or not, but it was quite a while ago now. Total trash.

That's pretty much all this game comes down to honestly. Its a game of who can exploit the best. There's no goal variety because there's no ai learning. If each cared to actually make the game good, they would add the ai learning in so people couldnt so the same things over and over and over and over and over and over again. How goalies can grab slappers no problem and with no rebound control trouble but go **** when a soft shot is thrown at the net is so frustrating..
  • Best game to date. Could use a bit more realism, n something needs to be done with HUT. I dont want to play 12 games or whatever it is to open one pack of cards to get maybe 2 players that I could use, and enough contracts for 1 line.

1 pack every 2-3 wins would be nice. Or tokens for W's that can be traded for random players.

From someone who actually knows how to play defense, no they aren't. The OP is spot on, but the goalies are fine. Could they be a little better? Yeah. But they are far from "the worse they have ever been." Very far from it.

The goalies are not fine though. They still let in curve wrist shots almost every time, and now they also let in complete garbage shots from anywhere as if the game has decided what the score will be. Garbage shots from the goal line also seem to go in even more.

As someone that actually knows how to play d, you should know how bad the goalies are. To work your but off to play perfect and still lose to some people that so obviously don't have a clue what they're doing. When they do score I feel like I lose control of my d for some reason or just can't switch to the player I want - IMO the goalie is useless and it doesn't matter if you have Carey Price or a prospect in net, if opponent gets an open shot, it's going in. I think at some point in this series anyone any good realizes that if their defense is not standing in front of the shooter, the goalie will probably let it in. Additionally, in 17 even if the goalie makes a save, it feels like 50/50 that some weird garbage will happen where it still ends up in the net.

My friends and I felt like NHL 13-14 was good enough - especially now with the direction this series has gone. We were big into gm connected. There was some serious garbage in those games, but for the most part (especially compared to now) it felt like you were playing a human and not just fighting with your controller/lag/momentum logic.

Please EA, consider taking a year off to try to get things right. Or stop making the game entirely and let another company enter the market that will have some confidence to try it out without EA just crushing them with their resources as soon as they feel some competition pressure.
  • I'd rather have the goalies be a little more loose than revert them back to superhuman highlight reel Spider-Man superheroes that save every single good scoring chance with ease and only let in tricklers. I feel like with good defense the scores this year have been much more realistic than 16.

The game is still bad though and has a long way to go to become a good hockey game.

I've noticed way more tricklers and weak goals this year than last year. At least 2 garbage goals each game sometimes more. So many goals bounce off players and end up in the net this year. Worse goaltending I've seen yet in an EA game in my opinion.
  • I agree with it all .

    To use an analogy.

If you have a car that is a complete lemon.

You can add a set of tires to make it move better, or replace the interior to make it look better.

But it is still the same car that breaks down all the time.

Unless EA makes a complete new game from scratch there is NEVER a chance of a good game.

I have said this for too many years but unless it is a complete new game from scratch in 18 I will plan a trip to the Antarctic circle for NHL 18 ,release so I can NOT buy it!

Yeah? I mean you just said "goalies are fine" have you seen the **** they let in? Have you seen the huge rebounds that they give up with easy wrist shots and even super slow backhanders? Every modern goalie is drilled by his coach into using his stick to send rebounds high into the corner. And if they aren't taught that by their coach, then they better get a new coach. I don't know if the goalie's are the worst ever, but they're certainly not fine by any stretch of the imagination.

    1st goal:

Should be easy save but since the goalies are not 100 on all attributes sometimes they don't catch **** like that. It's part of the randomness that should be in there. You D man wasn't first to take rebound so your D has to be more on track of opposing offensive players. There's offensive guy is alone in front of the net and there happens to be a rebound and they get the puck first.

    2nd goal:

Should have been called interference. that's a bad goal

    3rd goal:

If you see someone having so much open space at the blueline you better be ready for the shot and press R2 when the shot is fired.. Believe it or not but sometimes 5 holes go for real goalies as well. Being in the right spot doesn't guarantee save % of 100.

    4th goal:

That is strange angle shot and an animation bug. Nothing to do with the goalie. If the player would have been other way around slapshot from that distance would have VERY high percent of going in.

    5th goal:

You are making minor move to the side when the shot goes off which makes it harder for the goalie to take it. I KNOW it should be quite easy even tho you are moving but as soon as you learn that moving in situation like that is bad the better off you'll be. Also if you have problems with auto covering the puck put it to manual. Also you are way too much out of your crease and if there would been a pass to the side you would have been way exposed.

    6th goal.
Great job avoiding the puck. You are literally dodging it the other way.

    so in summary:

2nd and 4th goal has nothing to do with goalie animations.

1st,3rd,5th and 6th are your mistakes. well first is defenders mistake but anyways.

If this is how people **** and moan about "GARBAGE GOALS **** EA". Then you better just learn how to play.

SURE garbage goals happen rarely even tho you defend well and position yourself correctly but more often than not it's your and your defenders fault. Kinda fed up explaining people how this game works.

EASHL goalies are clearly the best goalies:
User goalies on Superstar also have the stuff made of legends. Combined 63 sv% in four games.
