"We are, but many of us get silenced/banned on these forums by the glorious adolescent mods that defend this game to death, and would rather ban you than have to deal with varying opinions. It's such a joke. "
Time to get political, that is the liberal/progressive mindset, don't listen, just silence those you disagree with using absolute power.
Regardless, NHL 09, 10, 11, and 12 were the glory days based on facts of population, activity, rivalry, message board activity, leagues, etc. you name it. This game was fun back then, not frustrating, FUN!
TPS and backwards skating is the culprit, old skating engine with perfect vision control made this game fun, TPS and backwards skating (which screws up normal vision control) makes this game clunky, wonky, unreliable, non responsive thus a frustrating game to play. Like many hardcore players have stated, us from the glory days have left this game, those who stuck around until now have just about given up.
Its a new generation of players who didn't play in the glory days, all they know is TPS and clunky random games, to them its fine and they don't understand our argument because they don't have the same perspective as us hardcore players do having played the old and the new thus can render and opinion of the two.

Well said sir: I don't post much, but I read the forums daily and think you are dead correct here.....been playing since 11, but have found the game to be lacking since tps was introduced in 13......down to playing maybe 20% of what I played on 11 and 12......for me, it is simply not fun like it use to be
Just a bunch of crying in this thread. The game is going to continue on the path it's going on. You list the glory days of the figure skating era pretty much where there was no weight of the players and movement was so very unrealistic. You whine and cry for 2K to save you, but it's NEVER EVER going to happen. You obviously don't care for the game but my guess is that you still end up buying it. My guess is that you say you buy it used. Well that really shows them not to invest money into the game. Just because Ultimate Team makes EA some good money doesn't mean that money goes into the NHL team. They do a great job with the size of their team and having it on a yearly basis...which will not change either.
I've been on these forums forever and every single year all the way back from when I was here in 08 there was and always is complaining about skating, shooting, glitches, goalies, and more. They worked on making things more realistic to a degree and people who need that arcade feel are totally hurt over it.
The NHL series is far from perfect with a ton of flaws that need addressed, but the changes from 16 to 17 were quite nice overall. I'm pretty sure the best experience is offline since you can tamper with the sliders to your liking and get the feel you most enjoy.
Anyways I'm sure I can come back in another month and see someone with a new name probably posting the same **** trying to pretend to be someone new. It's the circle of the forum life here... same as the CoD forums and others that are yearly.
You mean the glory days of the arcade "magic carpet" glide skating engine and glitch goals galore. "Oh but you just defend against the glitch goal". Whoops! There's the one-timer!
"Well then protect against the one timer". Whoops! There's the Bacon Slapper!!
"Well then protect against the Bacon Slapper". Whoops! There's the curve shot!!
"Well then protect against the curve shot". Whoops! There's the Kick wrap!!
And the vicious circle never ended. Please... Stop talking about the past of the NHL series like it was the golden years. It was the golden years of ****!! And I've got news for you; we've never left them. Every year there's the same **** affecting the game in a different packaging.
That's not the fault of TPS or that the game is more realistic now. That's just the direction the game has been going on since... forever (and no, that's not the developer's fault either).
"Stop talking about the past of the NHL series like it was the golden years."
You need more than an opinion to back this statement up, I brought my evidence as in how "HOT" EASHL was in 09,10,11 and 12, it was the hay day, so many good clubs and players, so many rivalries, so many matches. There was never a more dedicated (addicted) group of NHL'ers playing this game. You cannot compare today's EASHL to 09, 10, 11, and 12, its a joke in comparison, nobody plays club anymore, the game is basically dead, dead when compared to the glory days.
You are confusing the argument, this isn't about technology and advancement, sure the programming and game mechanics today are off the charts genius and in theory making this a realistic simulation sound amazing, however reality is its not amazing, its a cluster f#$k, its delayed, its slow, its wonky, its frustrating, its nothing but fire pucks on net before you turn it over and hope for rebounds/deflections, it may be more realistic, but this is a game, there is a reason game rooms used to be called "the arcade" arcades are fun!!!! Games should be fun!!! Since NHL 13 this game is not fun, its a chore to play, and frustrating because its been my favorite game since 93/94 NHLPA on sega genesis (which was fun!!!), and I just can't stop giving each new year a try hoping for the game to have that old feel, I'm getting closer to realizing it just isn't going to happen.

Pretty much this, not sure how you can argue that there wasn't a ton more activity before NHL 13 in EASHL, last time we played it on NHL 16 ( gave up buying after that), it was dead. If you don't agree with that then you either didn't play before or are just in denial.
In the past games, many strategies were employed to score.
Some guys only went for cross crease. You could counter that
Some guys only went for cherry picking. You could counter that.
Some guys only went for wraparound. You could counter that
Some guys only went for curl wristers. You could counter that
Some guys only went for Deflections. You could counter that
Some guys only went for point slappers. You could counter that.
Most of these types of shots the goalies stopped very infrequently. because they are hard for any goalie to stop unless there is help from the defense.
Today, all these shots are stopped very frequently by goalies. Good right ? Nope.
Defense has a lesser role to play in the outcome.
Offense has a lesser role to play in the outcome.
You can cycle well and completely beat the defense and take an amazing slot one timer and you will be rewarded by a routine save. Meanwhile, the opponent will enter the zone, panic due to the defensive pressure, take a terrible shot that SHOULD be a routine save but instead, it will trickle in somehow.
How do you counter that? how do you fight that?
There is one way left to play this game and its to abuse the living **** of the same 2-3 glitch goals all game long every game. This is what 99% of teams do now and the creativity is non-existant in the game anymore. The only way to fight garbage goals is with consistent scoring. How do you consistently score on a goalie that stops almost every good scoring opportunity? You find the one thing they cant stop and you abuse it.
Gltiches have always been part of the game but a good team did not need to glitch to win. Nowdays...not so much.
Its just a bad game now. it really is. But the guys who used to lose most of their game trying to same shot over and over all game are now kings and will die protecting this product.
You may have said it better than I did. What this game does is use the AI to balance the game so the weaker team is competitive.
Its quite evident just by the posts in this thread.
Just throw the puck on net. Offense is easy. I'm scoring more goals now than ever.
Gonna go out on a not so wild limb and say these individuals routinely have low puck possession/don't cycle the puck and score on the rush for the overwhelming majority of their goals. Their personal success = how well the game plays. A very biased view.
I appreciate the replies both negative and positive. Posting what I did I knew I would get the typical frat boy "Don't let the door" comments.
Lastly I know where my place is. As a single consumer I'm just a single tooth on a cog in the grand machine. I'm fully aware EA could likely give two **** but I'm appreciative of my ability to come on here and air some grievances so that if one day EA wants to figure out what is driving away the fans, they have a place to look.

Bold part - It's typical of the truly IMMATURE people to say that kind of stuff.
I give you much props and a big BRAVO ZULU. Like I said, I am in the same boat as you! I have been an avid EA supporter since NHL92 but it kills me to see how far how fast this series has dropped. I've been a member of these here Forums since '08 and many regulars know my spiel and how I feel about certain things.
YES I know for a Fact that my complaints or opinions fall on deaf ears (EA) and are mocked by the IMMATURE Children on this Forum but hey I too am a BUYING CONSUMER and what do CONSUMERS do when they are unhappy with a product that they like? They Complain about it (that's the way the world works).
How can it be a competitive, team-based game though when only a small fraction of the player-base plays EASHL-OTP...
A small fraction of the player base plays EASHL? I'd say most of the people who play this game regularly, play EASHL exclusively. None of my friends play any of the other modes because they are garbage in comparison. If at least 3 people from the club aren't on, we play a different game or watch netflix lol.

Having an anecdotal account of why YOU liked NHL 09-12 does NOT "evidence" make... I've played the game. The "EA momentum", "Ice-Tilt", "Rubber-banding", "Catch up logic", whatever you want to call it, it's been a topic of hot discussion in EA games, especially the NHL series since... Well probably since the beginning. Much earlier than when TPS was implemented or "realism". It isn't new to NHL series.
As for arcades, well there were very few Arcade NHL games. Only two come to mind Blades of Steel and 2 on 2 Open Ice Challenge. Two games that were more about razzle-dazzle, high scoring, big hitting action than actual "hockey". They were designed to be played in about 5 minute spurtz, which is the average time your average teenager would spend on a machine before moving on to another one like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat or whatever your local arcade had that was popular. Those days are long gone thanks to the advent of home consoles.
Home consoles changed how people looked a video games. No longer did you have to contend with games that played in small chunks. People had time to play games at home. Games were no longer 25 cent investments, you could take your time to enjoy them. Games like RPGs and Simulations flourished with the home consoles. As such, games became more complicated and required more "skill" rather than "twitch reflexes" to play which is how I would describe an Arcade game. And they're still fun to play, except that now you have a much greater chunk of time to enjoy them than in the frenetic setting and pace of "Ye old Arcades"...
It's never a bad thing when games evolve from mindless, braindead fun to something that requires thought and skill to play. That's how it's supposed to be.
If you don't like that, it's fine. But don't go labeling something as "fun" when it might not be for everyone. Especially those of us who have grown way past "childish", mindless entertainment.
This game is by far the best in the last several years. After the stick lift got fixed, Defense is damn near perfect. I can take a single d-man and regularly shut down a single forward in HUT. Which is exactly how it should be.
Only people complaining about OP defense are people who don't know how to play offense and just survived for years through exploits. Like that numb nuts who listed all of them and how easy they used to be to counter :eyeroll:
People complaining about how stick lifts are OP because they get stick lifted are even more clueless. Seriously. "Well NHL guys don't get sticklifted so I shouldn't either" has got to be one of the most nonsensical arguments out there. They don't get stick lifted because they pass.
Defense is great this year. In D1 HUT I consistently get outshot by 10-15 goals per game. But I still usually win. How? Because I exploit my opponent's defensive mistakes, and try to only give him bad shots that I know my goalie can save. Does that sound like anything? Real life, perhaps?
Honestly, this is the best game they have released in years, maybe ever. But you know what they say, "[Cry baby offense only noobs] gonna hate"
One thing I really liked about this game at the outset was how you could play defense and it was rewarded. It still it to some extent but I don't understand why you would increase stick lift in open ice. It's next to never that in an NHL game a player's stick gets lifted on a rush and the puck taken away in one motion. And it certainly wouldn't happen to Jordan Eberle as it did in a game I was playing. This has nothing to do with how good I am. In EASHL drop-in I'm 24-16-3 playing with random people. The reason is because I know how to play defense even though I am not a super-skilled player. But give people with less hockey knowledge the ability to make up for mistakes by pressing the X button and you're doing the game a disservice. It's very disappointing because that's the part of the game I really liked when I first bought the game. The fact that the stick lift was toned down to realistic levels. Now they went and made it arcade-ish again. Probably because people who have no idea that body positioning and use of your stick on the ice are more important than lifting the stick. I'm sure there were lots of complaints about it. Sigh.
But But But But But But NO ONE PLAYS DEFENSE in a Hockey video game. Being in proper position to rub the puck carry out along the boards takes to much Hockey Knowledge and therefore has no use in a Hockey video game, pressing X is a more easier solution to take the puck away from the puck carrier!
This and the people that don't understand that hitting is meant to separate the man from the puck, not the man from his Head

Actually, it doesn't sound anything like real life. The most successful teams in the NHL, year in and year out, are the teams that consistently generate more shot attempts than their opponents do. Teams that manage to win despite being consistently outshot inevitably see their performance come back to earth (see the Leafs' 2013-2014 season and the Avalanche the last two years).

I agree to an extent, but you do have to create quality scoring chances and not just throw the puck at the net.

Agree with BMH! Look at how the Pens won the Cup this past year. They came thru the Neutral Zone with SPEED, DUMPED and CHASED (Won the majority of the 50/50 pucks off of that Dump and Chase) and set up a Good CYCLE (quick puck movement which led to confusion by their opponents and allowing the Pens to have an open man). The Pens generally OUT Chanced every team they faced in the Playoffs (they held SJ to 2 weak shots in the Entire 3rd period of Game 6 in the SCF) the Pens controlled the TOA. When your opponent has you pinned in your own end because you're to busy chasing their CYCLE, it's hard to score goals of your own. But of course it is EAs world and despite proof of what I just stated, somehow when I OUT SHOOT, out TOA, out PP chance an opponent in this game they always seem to Win or make it close when they have NO business being in the game

Off with their heads!!!
